@JaxonH That screenshot, is that about 3D All Stars? Or the FE release? So what they're saying is they'll release an "app" through which you can buy retro games, is that right?

edit: 3DAS = 3D All Stars obviously, not I understand the post.

@Octane It's about both. They're saying that both this FE release and 3DAS are basically them releasing something to recoup costs and test out what they're building while they're working on revamping NSO into a mix of paid and free games, rather than just free ones.

@link3710 So if real, the paid games are pretty much like games on Stadia where you don't own them even though you've bought them (when the NSO servers shut down for Switch or you let your subscription expire you lose both the free games and the paid games).

Grumblevolcano

link3710

@Grumblevolcano It doesn't say anything either way. It's entirely possible paid games will be retained, even without a subscription.

EDIT: I will say, if they do the latter, I expect all the currently free games to offer paid options. Perhaps not now, but maybe near the end of the console's life cycle, so they can squeeze more money out of people who want them for good.

@link3710 Ergo, they're finally doing what they should've been doing from the start, the Virtual Console method. Maybe if they let you buy the games through the ''app'' itself, it won't clutter the eShop, and/or take away the spotlight from third party games.

Grumblevolcano

@link3710 Oh, you're thinking that the app might be like a second eshop and purchases are separate tiles on the Switch home screen?

I was thinking it would be an all in one app which contained the games themselves like Game Room for Xbox 360 that you'd need a NSO membership to load.

Grumblevolcano

link3710

@Grumblevolcano I was thinking that the new app might not require NSO to open actually. Most games let you open without NSO after all, but restrict certain features to requiring a subscription. The games would still be within the app, but purchased ones don't have a subscription check.

EDIT: If they really are including GameCube and Wii games, those may need to be separate tiles though. Wii games are commonly multiple GB a piece for the ROMs after all. Or maybe they'll be treated as DLC...? Otherwise, we could be looking at an app that's well over 32GB.

EDIT 2: Before anyone mentions compression as a solution, keep in mind that the files location on the disc is important for proper emulation, since the GameCube/Wii had a fixed disc speed. So files physically closer to the inside of the disc loaded faster than those outside. There is a fan made compression algorithm that solves this, but it's pretty much brand new and took ages to develop, so who knows if Nintendo would already be on that.

@Magician can Nintendo reach 19 milions Switch sold with Hyrule Warriors:Age of Calamity and Pikmin 3, Animal Crossing( dont count since the game reached it maximum sales potencial) and the lauch of PS5 and Xbox Series X, until march 2021.

i like HD Rumble.

Of course they can reach 19. They’ve practically done that every year since launch, and this year their sales are two fold higher than usual. Typically 3 mil a quarter with 9 mil in Q3 for 18 total. This year they’re doing 6 mil a quarter and God only knows how much they’ll do in Q3. But 6 mil a quarter for the other 3 quarters puts them at 18 even without counting Q3, and even in past years they were hitting 9 mil in Q3. All they’d have to do is match previous FY performance in Q3 to land at 27 mil, and they’re likely going to exceed previous fiscal years this holiday given the 2x sales trend all year leading up to it.

Yeah, Q3 this year should still be very good for them .... It's only Q4 where they have the few people who managed to get their PS5 or Series X/S pre-orders in to worry about! I'm going to predict that'll make a lot less difference than some seem to be expecting
Switch Lites will still be a lot more budget friendly to get as presents for plenty of people

Back in May Nintendo reported 55m Switches sold from March 2017 up until March 2020, then in August Nintendo reported just under 62m had sold at the end of June 2020. Typically, the bulk of a platform holder's consoles are sold from October to December. This time last year Nintendo sold a little over 10m in those three months.

My estimate is that the release of PS5 and XSX will negatively impact Switch sales by ten percent. Nintendo will sell roughly 9m Switches from October through December. Followed by another 3m from January to March. And ending the 2021 fy at 22m Switches sold.

Breaking the record of 21m consoles sold last fiscal year, set by the Switch.

The Switch is selling faster than any previous console, even outpacing the PS2 (155m+ lifetime sales).

@BruceCM I genuinely don't think PS5 / XBSX will be available on shelves until next FY anyways. New systems always have stock shortages, and there've been plenty of rumors about sourcing production issues. I remember seeing that they had to cut PS5 production for the FY by 4 million due to chip shortages, that alone should be enough to keep it from being worth worrying about.

Yeah, that's also a factor in favour of the Switch, @link3710 ....It even seems that most of the people I know online who'd got PS4 &/or XB1 on their launch haven't been so concerned about getting the next ones! Yet they've supposedly made more of the PS5 than there were PS4 & pre-orders have been snapped up, so there definitely are people getting them
It'll be interesting to see just how it does all go but I'm certainly not concerned about Switch suffering this holiday period! I don't imagine Nintendo are wringing their hands in worry about it, either

Seeing some analysts like Michael Pachter making suggestions that Nintendo should abandon the hybrid concept triggers me so badly. I think, "motherlover, do you not see the borderline biblical degree of success the Switch is having right now?" His inane nonsensical babble drives me up a wall. I swear he does it just for clicks.

Even though I almost completely use my Switch as a handheld the benefits of the console's versatility seems to be what grabs so many people

However I do partially agree in that I think the Switch's strengths are far more pronounced when it's undocked because of the sheer reality of playing console games on the go. As a home console on the TV it still gets outclassed by the PS4 in like every way which is why I don't really care for playing it on the TV at all.

The pandemic pretty much removed all interest I had in playing the Switch in handheld mode. The main reason I'm still considering 3rd party multiplatform games for Switch is Microsoft and Sony still treat gyro as a useless gimmick (the other reason is that Switch is still by far the fastest OS). The Series X/S controller is literally just a XB1 controller with a share button and while PS5 controller does have gyro it'll barely get used just like the PS4 controller which means Microsoft will avoid gyro for even longer.
