@Ralizah @TheFrenchiestFry
We’ve got a ton of evidence, including no less than 3 separate leaks saying MH Switch is coming (and a 4th from one of the 3 reiterating since a year had passed). We also have Capcom’s own statement when asked about MHW on Switch for kids, saying that despite World not coming, they do have a MH “like PSP that appeals to kids” (referring to the local wireless MP sensation of portable MH in the country). Not only that, just take in the facts and ponder for a second.

Monster Hunter on 3DS was able to pull 5 million copies for ultimate versions, typically. On one single platform. And a platform that wasn’t very popular in the west and predominantly relied on Japanese sales. And low budget (not appealing to the big budget gaming masses).

Now.

MH World did crazy numbers. 15 million for the base game. HOWEVER. That’s split across 3 platforms, so an average of 5 mil per platform, which is the same 3DS was doing, and as a low budget game that had no western appeal. Secondly, the “ultimate version” of MHW did DRASTICALLY lower numbers. We’re talking like 5 million TOTAL across 3 platforms. That’s way worse than 3DS entries did! And I believe that is convincing evidence that the explosion in popularity was a temporary bubble. Right game, right time, right hype. A lot of disenfranchised Destiny 2 players migrated over at the time. But retention is key. And it seems retention was incredibly poor. The game certainly brought in new players, but most didn’t stick around afterward.

So.

If we consider the Switch’s popularity (series selling up to twice what they were doing on 3DS), and the fact even MHGU, a port of a 6 month old expansion of a 2 year old low budget game, managed to do some 300k in the JP/Asia region alone (and broke 1 million in the west too) compared to just 500k of MH World’s ultimate version in Japan, we can safely conclude that a new, ground up MH on Switch could potentially push 10 million copies. Potentially. If the flashy graphics crowd gets on board in the west, which I think they will now that they’re into the series from MHW. The game would do 5+ mil in Japan alone, and I’m pretty sure, if it’s exclusive, the other regions will match that in a post-MHW era.

That’s SERIOUS money on the table ready to be stuffed in a duffle bag. Furthermore, they have two teams, and the team that did Generations Ultimate teased “NEXT” in a picture. Lastly, we have a hint from the legendary King Zell (before he went underground and stopped leaking, although he has resurfaced recently) saying MH for Switch is a thing that’s happening.

Now, it’s possible everyone is wrong, the leaks were misinformed, Capcom was referring to a mobile game (seriously doubt that but, I’ll entertain the notion here), the MHGU team’s NEXT was pure accident and they’re working on a second multi platform title excluding Switch. Sure, that’s possible. But I don’t buy it for a second.

@Ralizah
Do we have a general 3DS thread like this one for Switch, where we can discuss all different games on 3DS from SMT to MH to DQ to Zelda to Metroid to Atlus, etc? I’m getting pretty hard-core into this 3DS again and am starting to think people may not appreciate the conversation frequently derailing to a legacy platform.

Have some more:
Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time - 8/21
Moon - 8/27
AVICII Invector - 9/15
XIII - 11/10
Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin - 11/10

There's not thaaaat many games coming this year though compared to past ones... at least with solid release dates. The TBA 2020 list is huge still.

And gleamlight!! Doesnt anyone else have an interest in gleamlight or am I the only one? Lol

@NintendoByNature I'm definitely interested, but as far as I know, it's still not dated, is it?

EDIT: Just looked it up, it was dated for August 20th a couple days ago apparently.

@link3710 yea! It looks dope. It got alot of flack for looking like HK. And I really can't argue with that. But it does look good. I will however make sure it's legit before I purchase it. Im worried NL won't review it

So my favorite new announcement from the recent State of Play, The Pedestrian, was just confirmed to becoming to Switch too. Now all I need is confirmation of The Pathless and Crash 4, but that won't be til 2021, I'm betting one year timed exclusivity on both.

@link3710 Honestly I've been so spoiled by how buttery smooth N. Sane Trilogy was on Steam that I'm probably going to get it on that

Why the PS4/XB1 versions didn't get a patched 60fps when they clearly looked capable of that, I don't know

Yea, they're gonna hold back on Crash for a long time is my guess, but they know it will sell like crazy to the Switch audience so it's gonna come eventually. I really think a lot of platformer fans are on Switch. I wonder how the Spyro and Crash collections ended up doing in sales on Switch compared to the other consoles? I would assume they easily outsold the Xbox versions, but maybe not the Playstation. The other consoles also had a lot more time to accrue sales.

@link3710 I feel pretty good about The Pathless. Most of the Apple Arcade indies that hit consoles eventually make it to Switch.

@TheFrenchiestFry Yeah, I haven't decided yet, but either PC or Switch will be the version I get. PS4 versions are games I only get if there's no other options, since the hardware offers no edge, and I don't want to pay for online for the system.

@rallydefault I'd wager exactly 1 year. It was exactly 1 year to the day for Crash Trilogy and Spyro Trilogy, so it'll be a year yet again. I don't think I'd call that a long time tbh.

@baller98 Woah, I was so used to people using that facetiously I wasn't expecting an actual hidden gem. That game looks gorgeous, and kinda defies genres. I see things reminiscent of megaman, Zelda II, Celeste, and more, but it has a very strong and distinct new feel to it.

EDIT: Yeah, everything about this game gives me sidescrolling Zelda vibes. Playing songs to open doors, fishing minigames, crossbows, bombs, item locked progression, pushing crates, hitting switches, swords, rolls, the dodongo like boss? This feels like it started life as a Zelda fan game to imagine how a modern Zelda II might look. But it also looks like it could be so much more than that.

Thank you for bringing this up! Hadn't heard about it before, even though it definitely seems like my type of game. Will be keeping my eye on that one.

On a totally different note, I guess there's no more point in hoping for Bioshock and/or Void Bastards to ever get gyro-aiming patched in?

@link3710 thanks, most of this I knew about. It is a rough year, of sorts, not due to nintendo or any other company really, but just overall due to EVERYTHING else. It has all had an impact on the gaming area.

Q: “Persona 4 the Golden” has been selling well on Steam, but do you have any plans to sell newly released games on Steam as well?

A: We remastered “Persona 4 the Golden”, a title previously sold on the PlayStation Vita, and released it for sale on Steam this fiscal year. Because of the game’s critical acclaim and its low selling price, sales were much stronger than expected. We will continue to actively promote porting previously released titles to Steam and new platforms. We are also negotiating with platform holders for new games in the future, and we’re considering ways to sell under favorable conditions for each title. Among them are measures such as preparing PC versions of the titles from the beginning, with multi-platform releases in mind.

SEGA and Atlus are prioritizing PC and console ports of their older content in light of Persona 4 Golden's "unexpected" success on Steam. Don't be surprised if we see more remasters of 6th and 7th gen titles from Atlus after SMT III Nocturne HD Remaster.

@TheFrenchiestFry Yeeeessss. I bought P4G on release specifically to support this practice (and cause it launched at a great price). I'll play it soon, just want to finish P5R first.

But that interview also seems to support more stuff like P3/P4 on Switch etc. They may have finally seen the light of day that single platform exclusivity isn't good for them or anyone other than the platform holder.

TheFrenchiestFry

@link3710 I don't know if Persona on Switch is as likely as a port of something like P3FES on Steam, but I can definitely see more SMT stuff like Digital Devil Saga or Raidou getting the Switch treatment personally

Even lowball estimates for late Persona Switch ports of 500k (would likely break 1m in truth), at $20 each (could easily charge $60 for P5) that’s still $10m left on the table. Sony is vindictive enough to pay that kind of money just to ensure a game doesn’t release on a rival platform they know it will do well on and take attention away from them (we see it all the time) but the cost is going to explode for them at this point. Before Persona got popular, maybe it was financially viable. But they would have to cover the cost of any lost profits for Atlus to agree, and at this point that expense would be anywhere from $10-$50 million.

Are they willing to pay that kind of money for a JRPG? That’s a lot of money. The more popular the series gets the harder it’s going to be for them to contain the series on their platform, assuming of course we can attribute the exclusivity to them and not Atlus. But given their statement of negotiating more favorable release conditions I think that is a safe assumption at this point.

And assuming SMT exceeds expectations on Switch, that’s only going to put more pressure on Atlus to release on Switch. At the VERY least, Steam releases would practically eradicate any lingering need to hang on to PS in light of a Switch/PC approach. Persona 6 may come to Switch, it may not. But as long as it comes to Steam that’s a momentous win. Throw in some back catalog on Switch for good measure and we can nail that coffin shut for good.
