I have been seeing a lot of comments over the past 24 hours regarding the new Nintendo online subscription service. Personally, I don't really see why we should be paying for online, no matter what the price.
I recently let my PS + subscription run out because I don't use it enough, don't really care for the "free" games and the price hiking that seems to happen each year is getting beyond a joke. It is essentially easy money for Sony, and that's all it is. It's not like Sony has that many multiplayer/co-op focused games - most first party are single player experiences.
And I never even bothered with the Xbox Gold, but I do sometimes play Mario Kart or Splatoon 2 online, but I have to ask myself - is it really worth the price tag and in short, probably not. The reason I will be paying is mainly because of the cloud saves, more than anything. If Nintendo bolster that retro library to include SNES and N64 (don't expect GameCube games to ever come) then that's great, but that's not something I am particularly bothered about. Would prefer not to pay but if it ensures me the ability to save my data incase anything happens to the system, then so be it.

I tend to agree with all of this. I'm someone who finds the outrage over this whole thing a bit ridiculous, especially the idea that Virtual Console should've kept going as is. BUT, that's mostly because the core problem is that I truly believe online should not be an extra cost when you've already paid for the console and the game, and that people are missing the forest for the trees. Especially considering the normal price for a retail HD console game, and the increasing focus on paid DLC and the like.
This is not bad (mostly) because of how Nintendo is doing paid online. It is bad because it IS paid online, where it in fact could totally have been free online that is improved from what Nintendo has done online for free in the past. Maybe if Nintendo uses free DLC like Splatoon's multiplayer as the standard for post-release content for its online games to make up for it. Maybe.

But even so, it would be wrong because then you are imposing a tax on other devs to fund your own development, just because you are a platform holder. The more correct way would be a sub for splatoon in that case.
The real beauty of the “NESflix” model is that it makes it viable to pop in and out of games with marginal value. Like I’d struggle to justify paying anything for Dr Mario on Switch but if it’s included in a broader subscription that I’m getting for other purposes then I might play it.
This is especially true for even more niche games with an even more limited audience.
Konami never ceases to amaze me. You make a game for the system that becomes a million seller, the system sells near 18 million units already, and you're like, nah, we good.
Now Playing: Mario & Luigi Brothership, Sonic x Shadow Generations
Now Streaming: The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
@Therad "imposing a tax on other devs to fund your own development, just because you are a platform holder" Is that not, and hasn't it always been, the point of being a platform holder? Why own a platform and build it from the ground if you're not doing that. Might as well just make games for general purpose computing devices otherwise.
What I fear is the coming subscription wave across publishers, starting with what emerged on XBox. You pay for Gold. You can pay for Game Pass, MS games + a selection of other games. Then on top of that you can pay for EA Play to play EA games. No doubt in the future then you can pay for UPlayLive, and 2KLive, and THQ Live, and Square-Enix: For the Games: Revision of Value: Second Try. and before you know it it's $180/mo in subs for every publisher's content, and we've successfully turned gaming into Big Cable.
@kobashi100@YummyHappyPills There are people in Mensa who have been trying to understand Konami, and they've all had nose bleeds and migraines for weeks. Einstein had an easier time working out the formula for E=MC2 than understanding Konami. Sometimes you just have to accept that some things man is never going to be able to answer.

For the record, I want to make this clear. I do NOT think that the current selection of NES titles in the Online Service is worth the price of admission. If Nintendo was going to focus solely on one console, basically any other Nintendo console would have been better than the NES.
But the general concept of gaining access to classic games through a yearly subscription service is fantastic, and a great improvement over the old fixed prices of VC. If we start getting SNES, N64, or GC games then it'll be a truly fantastic service. It just seems like we'll have to wait for that.
Mario Galaxy is ten years old, and now I feel old.
Nintendo didn't even say they aren't going to sell retro games. They said they're dropping the virtual console banner. What's all this drama about no more retro games?

In fairness, Nintendo invites this kind of alarmism by not immediately revealing plans for a replacement service. We know there'll be NES games offered through the online service, but that's it.
Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)

Yeah but using that logic Nintendo is never going to release a new Animal Crossing on Switch because they haven't announced it, and their last two games have been a party game and a mobile game. People just like to find any possible thing to complain about Nintendo.

Either things will be fine. Just remember the headline isn't the entire story.
Hell, I'll give you a perfect example: "Girl has leg reattached backwards after cancer surgery"
You all thought the same thing: They made a mistake, right?
Wrong: Read the actual story and it says: [strong]"Amelia Eldred from Tamworth, in Staffordshire, was diagnosed with bone cancer in her left leg last year and had surgery to amputate the limb.
A rare procedure called rotationplasty was used by doctors at Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, in Birmingham, to reattach the lower part of the leg backwards to allow the ankle joint to work as a knee joint."[/strong]
And this is why the headline "No Virtual Console" is a misleading thing.
