SNK Heroines is looking pretty hype.

I remember when it was first announced and I wasn't quite sure what to make of it. I heard talk of being really simple and something about one button and I kind of wrote it off without looking into it.

But as it turns out, my impressions were wrong, and as per usual the headliner critiques making the rounds weren't exactly accurate. The game actually has a good bit of depth. I read an article where they said they're basically taking the areas that are too complex in fighters that typically turn off all but the most dedicated fighting fans, and they are toning down that complexity from say, a 9/10 to 5/10, but then in other areas they are adding depth, to dial it up from say, 2/10 to 5/10. So they're kind of just redistributing everything so that nothing is too complex to the point it acts as a barrier of entry, but it still has a lot of depth to the game. Which is honestly a good thing. Most people (including myself) get turned off from a lot of fighting games because they're just so insanely complex to learn and master. And if you're not going to really dedicate yourself to it then why bother. But this game looks to hit the sweet spot.

And now I'm starting to learn what games the characters came from- Shermie, who was just announced, is from King of Fighters 97. That also helps attract me to the game- having a little context for the characters.

After reading that article from NIS I watched quite a bit more gameplay... I think I might be more excited for this game than any other Fighter coming to the system, even BlazBlue which has Persona 4 characters who I love from Persona 4 Dancing All Night and P4.

@link3710 I mean, a lot of titles on the Switch are just Wii U ports or in the case of BOTW, a dual release. There are still plenty of franchises for Nintendo to expand upon.

Toward the end of the system's cycle, I expect a Switch exclusive 3D Zelda. There might be a 2.5D Zelda as well. Pokemon, will, of course, get multiple releases. And I could go on.

@gcunit Okay, I'll bite. Active means that it received at least two titles within the last two generation (DS, 3DS, Wii or Wii U), and major meaning full sized releases (No Dillon's, Pushmo, NES Remix, etc.) I mean, there's still a number of mario sub-ips that are missing (Luigi's Mansion, Paper Mario, Mario and Luigi) and Pokemon sub-IPs missing (Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and Rumble), and then... Chibi-Robo. I suppose there's the Wii series too but... uh... I'm not exactly expecting that to come back branded with that IP given their move away from Wii branding.

And yeah Harmonie, I totally expect more to be done with all these IPs. It's the fact that so many are accessible at all that I find amazing.

@DarthNocturnal Pokemon given the BotW treatment would be basically an open world Pokemon game where you can complete the game in any order and the battles themselves is essentially Pokken gameplay. Fire Emblem given the BotW treatment would probably look like an open world mashup between Warriors, Shadows of Valentia dungeons and Mario + Rabbids.

@link3710 What I'm hoping is that Nintendo will just wait for Switch to become a bit more established, sufficiently clear of Wii, before we get some Switch Fit, Switch Sports, and Switch Party.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

@gcunit I'd rather see the Wii Party team take over Mario Party and inject it with fresh ideas than get a Switch party tbh, though I doubt I'm in the majority there. Switch Sports (whether it's branded as such or not) does seem like the one surefire title we'll see in the Switch's lifetime though of the former Wii titles.

I genuinely love Wii Fit and Wii Sports Resort and I'd love to see sequels to those on Switch

Thank you Nintendo for giving us Donkey Kong Jr Math on Nintendo Music

A new IP would also be pretty interesting to see. I'm already satisfied from my Switch so I don't care at the end of the day, but I'll definitely be looking forward to every E3/Direct.

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if we saw Mario Party 11 announced at E3 for a Spring 2019 release (though it probably wouldn't get the Spring release window until later).

@Grumblevolcano I think you are expecting a bit too much for Nintendo to mix up the Fire Emblem formula. The series is riding on a high, both critically and sales wise. There is no need for Nintendo to change it up just yet. Could say the same for Animal Crossing and Pokemon too. Sales and reviews say no need to make any real changes to the formula.

Grumblevolcano

@FragRed I was saying I don't want those drastic changes but BotW being considered the best Zelda game to many worries me that we will see those kind of drastic changes. For me Pokemon Switch would be best if it had the story focused direction of Gen 7 but with the gym system and Pokemon variety of Gen 6.

For Fire Emblem, what I'd like the most would be essentially another game like Ike's games but without the translation errors (that Radiant Dawn difficulty translation error was gamebreaking ).

FragRed

@Grumblevolcano Oooh, I understand now I am bit concerned for the speed that Fire Emblem is being released, after having the last game only coming out last year. I assume there was two teams on working both games.

Has anyone played Arcade Archives Punch Out? There isn’t a review up yet, so I’m on the fence about buying it.

@JaxonH I'm actually looking forward to SNK Heroines as well. I like this idea of a more approachable fighter that still has layers of depth to it. I like fighters, but I don't like how technical and complex so many of them are, and this looks designed to bridge that gap, with a nice serving of ecchi as the cherry on top.

Too bad, according to Sammy on PushSquare, that nobody is going to buy the game because it launches on the same day as Spider-Man.

@TheTetrisGuy I've played the game in actual arcades if that helps? I've never gotten all the way through it, but if you like the NES game and want more of the same, you'll like this.

Generally not a fighting game fan (the only one I'll ever put a lot of time into will be Smash), so I'll be passing on SNK Heroines. Nothing against the genre nor what it's apparently doing to change up fighter gameplay, it's just that fighters aren't my cup of tea. The fact that fighters are also so primarily multiplayer doesn't help, since I can only play so much multiplayer games at once. It's why I'll pretty much only have Mario Kart and Smash as my main multiplayer games.

I am gonna pick up Mario Tennis, though, because that tennis gameplay actually looks really fun and I enjoyed the GBC/GBA Mario Tennis games. Just don't know if I'll ever play online much in that game, though it might be likely.

I don't plan on playing SNK Heroines online. Single player arcade mode only, and local MP.

I got countless hours from Ultra Street Fighter IV 3D arcade mode. A good portable Fighter without insane bar of entry is a great, entertaining distraction when you have a bit of free time.

@Grumblevolcano I think BOTW was a long time coming, because Aonuma himself expressed disappointment in Twilight Princess at the very least, for being essentially Ocarina Of Time 2. He wanted to revolutionize more than he was able to.

@Ralizah Between SNK Heroines, ARMS, Pokken and the upcoming Smash, the Switch already has a big list of fairly accessible fighters, and on the flip side you have several old ones like Street Fighter II (and the upcoming collection) and all the SNK releases.

Alone, a force. Together, a force of nature.

@EvilLucario @JaxonH I like my 1v1 fighters, always have but I've always been terrible at them. I'll be buying the Street Fighter Collection and playing it online against some of the NL community which should be fun. SNK Heroines I'll buy for the fact it's a modern 1v1 fighter and because older SNK games have been a such a huge part of my Switch experience so far.

That Fantasy Strike that was shown in the Nindies Direct looks like it might be a good one for the lesser skilled fighters among us.

Yeah SNK Heroines interests me. Not sure I'll pick it up right away, but it's definitely on the radar. Not much of a fighting game person outside of Smash usually. That being said, I'd buy ports of UMvC3 and Dragon Ball FighterZ in a heartbeat.
