If this is the approach they are taking, it would be very easy to exchange the controllers to different layouts of buttons/sticks/switches/etc. But it wouldn't be able to work as a stand alone controller, unless of course we will have a different controller unit which they can be attached to.
Which is why I don't see the point in this and I do not think this will make its way onto the NX in its current shape. What's the point of detachable controllers when they don't work on its own? You could switch them, but for what? Two analog sticks on either side..? I guess you could switch the position of the buttons/D-pad and the analog sticks, but that's a pretty complicated mechanism just for that one little feature.
The point would be that it would be very cheap to manufacture new controllers since the controllers would be all plastic. And you can have an ordinary control scheme, and then you could have something entirely custom made for a game. A new controller would basically cost the same as a Wii-wheel. Basically, you could scale the controllers after the game, a very complex game could have a billion buttons, while something far simpler could have D-pad + A, B.
As an example, if they would have rocket league on NX, they could sell a branded controller for that, which could give you the feel of a real RC controller (one stick for forwards/backwards and one for left/right).
One thing that I feel is wrong with our standard scheme is that we basically have 2 controller-schemes crammed into one, we have d-pad + abxy, and we have double analog (DA) + shoulder triggers. When using
DA we usually also have some functions mapped to D-pad and abxy, which makes you have to move your thumbs a relatively long way. But if we instead would have some buttons closer around the analog sticks, we could have more functions more readily available. Instead of moving your thumb 4-5 cm, you could move it 1-2 cm.
Not saying this is what they are going to do, but it would be a very flexible scheme and it would be cheap with this tech.
"Then using that to conclude that 350mill gamers have just evaporated"
I simply said that those gamers have not bought new-gen consoles this generation. This is a fact and I don't know why you keep ignoring it.
I'm not ignoring it, I just don't think it's an incorrect reading of the data. At this point last generation you could have pointed to the 100mill consoles currently sold and compared it to the 200mill EOL sales for the generation prior. So we were 100mill short on home consoles, where had they all gone? Turns out they weren't gone, they just hadn't brought a system yet. By generation's end there were more consoles sold.
Anyways, I gave a fairly detailed analysis of where everyone had shifted. I pointed out that the PS4/XBOne are travelling about the same as the PS3/360. There's a large shift to Sony this time but the total is about the same. The Wii and DS casuals have gone somewhat so Nintendo are largely back to where they were before. But unlike the GBA era the 3DS has a competitor in the Vita and the Wii U has a competitor in the 3DS.
Because in-total portables are up compared to what they were before the DS. And home consoles are largely unchanged. The fact that the 3DS did take a lot of the steam out of the Wii U? This is a fact that bodes well for the NX. And I don't think third party support for it is going to matter to the extent that you want to claim.

The Metroid Prime: Blast Ball review that was posted made me realize a unforeseen consequence of Nintendo being so quiet with nothing really coming out. It must be difficult for Nintendo Life to make worthwhile articles that can generate page views and thus generate income for them. With Pure Xbox shutting down, is Nintendo Life in trouble? That is probably why they have had to resort to reviewing a glorified demo. Other Nintendo only website are probably taking a hit as well, NX rumor articles can only generate so many page views. How much longer can Nintendo Life and other sites survive without Nintendo showing the NX and its games? How much longer can Nintendo go silent while their biggest supporters, and sites that will give them the most coverage, are unable to generate profits?
I have no idea about Nintendo Life's financials, but this was a thought that popped into my head and felt like it could be a good discussion.
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...
@WebHead Yeah, but then those sites go under, NX is announced, all sites move on and just keep talking about the frames per second the Neo might give them...

@WebHead I don't think they have enough money to buy out all the shareholder. (I don't know business too well, especially Japanese business, not 100% sure how they would go Private)

@WebHead The Blast Ball review (reviewing a glorified demo???) was what made me think it was getting hard for them to come up with articles. Hopefully Nintendo Life can stick around... I have no where else to go

I hope Game Freak/TPC aren't being pressured to reveal more info about Sun/Moon than they normally would have. Pokemon is pretty much the only thing making the wheels turn at the moment.
On a side note, Nintendo did post a short clip of the Temple of Time in BotW on their Facebook today.

I think all the Pokemon Information is for the 20th anniversary. I don't think they are being pressured.
I saw the video, not much to talk about but I am surprised NL didn't post are article with it.
