NL: What are your impressions of the Nintendo Switch? Is there anything other gaming companies could learn from it?
Fries: When I first saw it, I thought it was creative, but I wasn’t sure if it was going to be successful. Some of the ideas we had actually talked about at Xbox, like having controllers you could separate and hold in each hand. I first played Zelda on the Wii U and enjoyed the game, and thought, maybe I don’t need a Switch. Eventually I buckled and got a Switch to play Mario, and I was really surprised how many different and creative ways they use the controllers, how they can be joined onto different supports, or you can separate them and hand them to another player and turn them sideways. It’s something that’s really won me over as a cool machine.
I love how creative Nintendo is. Now they have this Nintendo Labo with the cardboard. When I saw that I thought, good for you Nintendo, I just love how they’re always thinking outside the box. This cardboard thing ties into the whole maker movement, and it’s great to have kids building something physical.
I don’t think the right thing for Microsoft or Sony to do is imitate Nintendo or try to be Nintendo. I don’t think they’ll succeed by being Nintendo. I think they’ve gotta figure out what it is that they do well and continue to do that well.
@subpopz I got about twenty feet in my house as well. Would take the gamepad to bed to play.

I'm a Dream Fighter. Perfume is Love, Perfume is Life.
Nintendo Everthing are reporting that Everspace is inbound for the Switch, from the look of the launch trailer for Steam it looks like something to keep an eye on
My issue was more not being in HD. It worked, but HD capacitive screw is just so much better. That and every game requiring a different hotkey combo to swap to gamepad. Could enter remember which one to use- swipe down, find in options, + or -, + and - at same time, etc etc. That and the 20 foot invisible leash.
Personally the distance never really bothered me and TBH I mostly play my Switch in portable mode in the same room as my TV anyway. Being able to "brake the tether" with the Switch is fantastic but I rarely take advantage of it. Same deal with the Wii U not being in HD, 720p is definitely better but 480p on a screen that size wasn't that bad. For me the real reason the Switch wins is because:
1. Pretty much everything on Switch has to work off TV. On Wii U there were games which couldn't be played just on the GamePad because they used both screens in some way. Particularly annoying when the way it was used wasn't that nessisary (i.e. Splatoon).
2. There's no video compression on the Switch. The Wii U was a bit ahead of its time when you were playing something huge on a portable screen. The fact I was effectively playing the new Assassin's Creed on a portable in late 2012 still kinda blows my mind. But when you were playing an indie game or something a bit simpler? Those games looked better on 3DS. Especially fast moving retro titles like F-Zero.
3. Holding the screen while playing some games on the TV isn't forced on you. It's also not even technically possible now which is a bit of a downside. Either way, being able to use all of the features of the full device with a Pro Controller? That's kinda nice. And when my Pro Controller battery is dead I just pull off the always charged JoyCon and keep playing.
@YummyHappyPills If you want to send or receive information over bluetooth on your phone, it helps recognise the user from a list of potential targets.
LAN stands for Local Area Network. In a typical house, you have a router with wifi and ethernet which is in turn connected to the internet. Everything behind them are in the same LAN. If you log in to the router, you will probably see the nickname you have given the switch. This is because seeing just the IP-number isn't useful for puny humans.
@toiletduck
People are tired of the New series and they've never ported a New Super Mario game to date.
They'd likely just release a new one instead.
@gcunit
Oh I'll buy em again, just like I used to buy Vita versions of PS4 games and 3DS versions of Wii U games. Handheld version of a game I love? Sold.
If I were more strict with my money, I'd still buy all my favorites (Mario Kart 8, DKC Tropical Freeze, Bayonetta 2, etc)
Psalms 22:16 (1,000 yrs before Christ)
They pierced My hands and feet
Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)
He was pierced for our transgressions
Zachariah 12:10 (500 yrs before Christ)
They will look on Me whom they pierced
Pirates Curse is my favourite too. I couldn't get into 1/2 Genie Hero in the same way. I'm not sure if I'll buy PC again as it wasn't that long ago since I played it. Maybe in a year or 2 in a future sale.
@JaxonH To be fair they also never ported a new Mario Kart before the Switch. The Switch is uncharted territory now, so yeah. As this is a new Nintendo with new leadership under Kimishima, we're gonna see some tradition breaking, for better or worse.
Metroid, Xenoblade, EarthBound shill
