1/2 Genie Hero is practically a generic platformer in comparison to previous games. It also ditched the fun, consistent character development that has persisted over the three Shantae games. It's a soft reboot that turns Shantae from a series full of personality, dungeons, and fantastic pixel art into an inferior retread of Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap.

Considered on its own, it's not a terrible game, but it was staggeringly disappointing for this fan.

@OorWullie I got one of the Shantae games as a 'freebie' within the Friends of Nintendo Humble Bundle. Think it is the same game across Wii U and 3DS. Never spent more than 5 minutes with it. Guess I've overlooked a possible gem then?

@JaxonH ah I assumed you were saying Nintendo wouldn't release another NSMB-ish Mario game (2D platform, local co-op supported, accessible game). I was a bit too quick to come to that conclusion, sorry. I doubt it whether people are actually as tired of NSMB as you presume. A lot of people on these forums are kind of hoping for it and many people have only played one of the earlier games since the Wii U version didn't reach a big audience.

Anyway, as long as they release some kind of 2D local co-op Mario soonish I'm happy

@Lroy It'll be Pirates Curse you have as well then as I got mine from a Humble Bundle. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with it, I played it to completion over 2 or 3 days,couldn't get enough of it. The graphics are very nice and it has a lot of character. If you enjoyed the Wonderboy IV Remake you'll love it. The more recent 1/2 Genie Hero which I was really looking forward to was a big disappointment though.

I'd still personally like to see NSMB All-Stars, with all four games accessible within. It won't happen, but man did they have some good platforming, especially Wii and U. NSMB2... well that's take it or leave it. Even if it is technically better than the original.

What do people find wrong with 1/2 Genie Hero? I picked it up looking for something similar to Wonder Boy and loved it...moreso than Wonder Boy actually. I've been struggling to get into the Pirate's Curse...although if it comes to Switch I might give it another try.

@Buizel It's a shallow experience compared to previous games. No challenge. No dungeons. The previous games, as I said, had fun and consistent character development across a growing cast of characters, and that's... gone... now.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, and hope you also eventually get into the older games to get a sense for what the series was like before this reboot as well.

If you have a 3DS, you might want to download the GBC Shantae and go from there. The first three games can all be played on 3DS (original via GBC VC; second game via DSiWare; third game was developed for the platform).

@Ralizah It could be a matter of taste then...I quite liked how easy-going the game was. Quite a straight-forward 100% which is nice sometimes. I quite enjoyed the characters as they were and had no idea it was a soft-reboot to be honest. I am tempted to go back to the other games though.

Off topic, but is the new logo due to the fact you expect Smash to be yet another Wii U port? @SLIGEACH_EIRE

Saw a list on Reddit of all the exciting games coming to Switch, which inspired me to complete the list with a lot of missing entries and compile it all together. Lot of games on the way, for sure...

@G0dlike I'm just having a laugh. I noticed that if you mirror the image and add in a diagonal line, you've got 4. I'll change it back in the next day or so. I don't think it'll be a straight port, it'll be upgraded with a few bits and pieces added. It'll be Ver. 4.5, that's just my opinion of course.

@subpopz Soft reboot, so it's still technically in the same continuity, but there's no references to events or characters from previous games, and it essentially sets everything back to zero.

@Buizel How much you enjoy a thing depends on what expectations you bring to it. As someone who played previous games and wanted something more like that, I hated how easy and streamlined it was. I could totally see someone wanting a colorful, fun platformer enjoying the heck out of the game, though. It's not a bad platformer; I just think it's a mediocre Shantae game. In fairness, though, I've not tried out the DLC they've added since, such as the mode where you play as Risky.

@JaxonH Danganronpa V3 was never confirmed, right?

Maybe it wasn't. I know that store leaked it and I just assumed it was confirmed since then, but perhaps not? Maybe I'll edit that out for now until we get further confirmation.

There's way too much stuff coming out in May, especially if you add 3DS/PS4 stuff into the mix. Prioritizing is going to be difficult.
