@OorWullie
There's a multitude of reasons. At this point it shouldn't be in doubt. The vast majority of anyone with common sense knows it's a new game.
1 No credit to Bandai Namco, only HAL
2 No copyright 2014
3 Logo variant
4 Specifically does not state Deluxe version, Ultimate version, GotY vetsion or even "for Nintendo Switch". If it were a port, it would be called one of these things
5 Working Title. You don't give a port a working title. "Ya, we couldn't decide on whether to call it Ultimate or Deluxe... we'll get back to you after we figure that out". Come on now...
6 No gameplay. If it were a port they would have showed gameplay because it's no secret what the game is or looks like. They would have shown footage, announced the new features and provided a date
7 Sakurai specifically tweeted he's been working tirelessly in secret and to stay tuned for more info. Don't exactly do that for a port.
8 Common sense. If it were a port, Nintendo would make it explicitely clear. They would get that information out right away to set expectations accordingly, not get everyone all excited thinking it's a new game, then pull the rug out from under everyone's feet and say "Gotchya! It's just a port!".
9 Lack of evidence to the contrary. There isn't one shred of evidence pointing toward this being a port. Not one single shred. But there's an abundance of evidence suggesting it's not.
Final Analysis It's a new game. It's not even in question. And the only ones saying otherwise are ones who refuse to consider the above collective evidence.
And above all, does it really matter anyways? Either way I think we all know what to expect here. Even if it were a port it probably wouldn't be much different anyhow, especially with Inklings and BotW Link. People just want Smash on their Switch. Smash 4, Smash 5... doesn't really matter.
Psalms 22:16 (1,000 yrs before Christ)
They pierced My hands and feet
Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)
He was pierced for our transgressions
Zachariah 12:10 (500 yrs before Christ)
They will look on Me whom they pierced
@YummyHappyPills Well, I'd agree that out of all their franchises, Smash is the most stagnant, so it doesn't really make a difference if they're building it from scratch or if they're porting the base game over. The only question here would be if it's SSBU + Inklings (and a few extra bits and bobs), or whether there will be a bunch of new characters and stages, and a few of them missing from the last game. So with any new Smash game, this question will be how many new stuff is there versus the old stuff.
Well visually...not much further. Its alrwady 1080p 60fps on Wii U so it'd be a boost to detail etc.
As for roster...itll need to match or be above 59 to be considered a step up from 4. Outside of that the usual new modes no one bothers with and such I guess
Now Playing: Mario & Luigi Brothership, Sonic x Shadow Generations
Now Streaming: The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom
People (myself included) want a proper single player mode.
We kinda got screwed with Smash Wii U and 3DS, more so Wii U than 3DS because Smash Run was replaced with a silly board game.
They put a solid single player mode, people will be excited.

Well, that's where I disagree! Because that idea will be unsustainable one day. Sooner or later they need to decrease the roster in size. If it's not now, it'll be five or ten years from now. So I don't think that it needs to have more characters to be considered an improvement. I think it only needs a few new characters.
If it's a port, that's cool. If it's a Splatoon 2 type sequel, that's also cool. As long as the gameplay is still Smash and you can use the GC controller as a GC controller (the current Switch OS identifies the GC controller as a Pro controller), most people will be satisfied.
It's a new game. I don't understand why there's still debate about this. There's literally no evidence of it being a port other than people insisting that it's "too soon", which it's not.
@Spoony_Tech I watched it. Doesn't mean a whole lot. They can add new music to an updated Wii U version of the game. They're updating Link's character.
They are completely changing and reanimating this character model therefore it is a port of an existing game.
I'm sure if we stretch this far enough, Super Mario Bros. 3 is a port of the original game, even with some changed assets, because some of the music, enemies and powers are the same. It's not a real sequel.

I think it'll be a new game, cast iron certainty. I'm not a big Smash fan but I know Nintendo and a sequel with redesigned characters and as many new ones as they can think of will maximise Amiibo sales.
I'm not a big fan, as I said above, but a good, beefy single player mode would tempt me as well as being a clear differentiator from the last installment.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Freezing an opponent for a second is a Final Smash? I see more as a special, highly unorthodox reflector that stops physical projectiles and items, which he then "reflects" by hitting them (or just move out of the way and let them pass). Time-stopping a rolling crate to whack it and ride would the most BOTW thing Link could do in a Smash game.
Why do some think it would be too soon for a proper sequel anyway? It's been around 2 years since the final Smash 4 DLC released. As if they had the whole development team working on DLC anyway. But even if they did, by the time the new game arrives it will have been around 2 1/2 years since work was concluded which is the same time it took them to develop the released game,March 2012 to September 2014. That was their first experience working with HD graphics too so the experience gained from that will be put to use in the new game.
There is absolutely zero evidence to suggest it's a port other than the Switch already receiving a few so I'm not sure why so many are convinced it is.
Why didn't we get a new Mario Kart on Switch so instead of MK8D? They've a tonne of content between Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS, plus the DLC, they could just reuse it, plus it's already 1080p and runs at 60fps. Nintendo love money for as little effort as possible. Why would they start from scratch when there's no need? Look at all the other Wii U ports on Switch.
