You could watch Netflix on your work Wi-Fi, in a hotel room, at a relative's house... there are plenty of situations where you wouldn't need mobile hotspot, but, mobile hotspot is something that almost everyone has, and I can't imagine Switch owners would rather watch on a phone propped up against a dirty work rag than a nice big 6" screen with a kickstand.

It's not about selling more units, it's about satisfaction of existing owners. And I would personally be more satisfied with Netflix, even if I don't use it that often.

Netflix puts their app on any device that's even remotely popular. If it's not on Switch- the fastest selling console in US history and which has already practically matched Vita and Wii U, devices Netflix was on from the start, it's because Nintendo doesn't want it on there yet.

@IceClimbers I'm not sure if she implied that. I think she just talked about the fact that Nintendo may also release videos on YouTube instead of doing a Direct (after all, that was how they introduced the Switch). And she also reminded us not to get too excited for rumours like this, because they could be focused on the 'casuals'. I'm not sure she's in on this rumour, it read more like a general warning; Don't get too excited. The Direct could be 3DS focused for all we know...

Yeah, I dunno. Seems odd for Nintendo to allow Hulu on the Switch but not Netflix. This is why I believe Netflix is being stubborn here. Could be wrong though.

Switch would actually be perfect for Netflix considering you can download the videos to watch with no internet.

Again, I'll just be that guy: In a world where everyone has 2-3 devices on them pretty much at all times, why do we need the Switch to run Netflix?

I'm pretty ludite when it comes to all this tech stuff, but even I usually have my cell phone within reach to watch something if I'd REALLY want to (actually have never done that honestly lol I think it's kinda silly), and the availability grows exponentially when I'm in my house: my smart TV, my Xbox, my PS4, my wife's laptop, her tablet, my PC... why do I need yet another device with Netflix on it?

If I were Nintendo, I wouldn't spend my time/money courting Netflix is they're playing hard to get for whatever reason.

@rallydefault well you don’t need it. Obviously. With an an emphasis on you don’t need it.

If you’re an 11 year old without a smartphone or a tablet maybe you do need it. Maybe if it’s a choice between a smal Android tablet and a Switch the availability of Netflix is a make or break feature. For many potential buyers great games would be nice to have but Netflix is essential.

I couldn’t care less about using my Switch to watch programmes on - & I think Nintendo was right not to emphasise the possibility in year one - but I can see how it’s hugely desirable long term.

@rallydefault Owning multiple consoles, it doesn't matter too much to me. However, it does mean that I would have to "switch" to PS4 if I wanted to use Netflix. Netflix on Switch would be more convenient for me and would help keep me in the Nintendo ecosystem which is good for Nintendo.

Edit: Plus PORTABLE, which according to many would mean it would be the definitive edition of Netflix.

Nintendo announced 3 new games coming to 3DS Selects, Link Between Worlds being one of them, so I assume that confirms the speculation that they were asking for review quotes for that reason

...for the same reason that Netflix was added to all of those other devices you listed - convenience.

I recently stayed at a hotel with my girlfriend - we had TV and internet access in the room, but the TV reception was poor...the obvious 'workaround' was to connect to the internet and stream content that way - but I don't have a tablet (not the biggest fan of them) and didn't think it necessary to take my laptop with me on a mini-break - so that left us with 4 options: an iPhone, a Samsung Galaxy, a 3DS and a Switch. Of the 4, the Switch would've been the only gadget that we'd have considered watching Netflix on (the only one with a decent size/resolution screen) - but the option isn't there, so we just streamed some music from one of our phones instead and made do!

Of course, that's just one example (I'll take my laptop next time!) ..but that 'convenience factor' is one of the major driving factors behind Netflix's success, so it's surprising to me that they don't have an app (at least in the works) for Switch - their business model revolves around having their service available on as many devices as possible, with one account linking them all - so there'd surely be an incentive for Netflix to get an app on there as well, the fact that they don't makes me wonder whether Hulu have paid for a period of exclusivity or something? ..with Hulu/NicoNico already on Switch, Nintendo obviously don't have a problem with these types of services being available on the platform - which just makes the absence of the likes of Netflix/YouTube etc all the more curious! ..right now though, with Hulu as the only real option (in the West), they're the only service that can offer that 'convenience' on this particular device - which just makes me suspect that they've paid for that privilege (to get one over on Netflix etc)

Just strikes me as odd!

I shared a picture of possible Cave Story 2 here couple of days ago but now I have no idea what they are teasing or if these images are just for fun... Here's what Nicalis tweeted today:
Untitled

The Cave Story characters seem to have the same art style as in the earlier picture but now it's suddenly basketball and there are other Nicalis characters. At least I think that one guy is from 1001 spikes.

At least we know the third party support going forward from Western companies.

EA...Iunno.

Activision...probably Skylanders.

Bethesda - Wolfenstein 2

Warner Bros. - Anything LEGO and Scribblenauts

Interesting to note that Bethesda is the only company bringing it's "A" games. Then again that's all Bethesda really has.

Any thoughts on Part 1? Looks interesting.

@YummyHappyPills Pretty sure Skylanders is dead. Hasn't been officially confirmed yet but I'd be surprised if it came back

Is it just me or is downloading things on Switch getting REALLY REALLY REALLY SLLOOOOOOOWWWWW?

I haven't downloaded much other than the odd Splatoon patch in ages (probably digital copy of Splatoon in July was the last) and it was slow but ok. I downloaded the giant Doom patch in November, but I think I set it up to go overnight and wasn't watching it, so it was just done when I got up. But last night I downloaded the latest Arms patch for the first time and it took FOREVER. And then I tried the DQ Builders demo (only 800MB, not a big DL) and it took like half an hour. Finally I DL'ed the Octopath demo (only 600MB...not exactly huge downloads) and it took like 20-30 minutes.

Note that this is using a WIRED connection while docked using the official Hori ethernet adapter. At one point during the Octopath DL, the lights on the switch (not Switch) stopped blinking and I thought it was done. I undocked it, nope only 83%....it had stalled out and restarted.

It definitely isn't the network/switch.....PS4 was going way faster (still slow...it's PSN....but far more respectable than that. and the laptop speed tests excellently. Switch was downloading at like 3Mb/s, with apparent periodic stops and starts that I assume is only on Nintendo's end (or power saving related while in the dock?)

Speed test on Switch ALWAYS shows speeds way below what the network really is (makes me wonder why I bother with wired...) but even on Switch the speedtest isn't as dismal as the download speed indicated. Has anyone else noticed it getting really bad? Like worse than PSN bad?

I have to laugh that the switch recognizes a 1gbps uplink on the wire.......so Switch supports gigabit Ethernet and 802.1ac....but downloads at ISDN speeds?

@NEStalgia Just dl'ed The Dragon Quest demo and only took me 5 minutes on Wi-Fi. I have however noticed it is slower then just a few months ago. While LA Noire took less then an hour at about 14gigs NBA 2k over a month later for me took just over 2 hours at 23gigs.

@SLIGEACH_EIRE Further down that resetera thread Emily Rogers posted and basically implied that we're not actually getting a direct this Thursday but rather that they'll announce something via trailer/Twitter, and that it's something focused on casuals.

Maybe Animal Crossing? Entice them with the free Pocket Camp game and then announce a full game for Switch.
