"And what about Retro's game?" I swear Retro is just a helper studio now not actually working on their own game, just working on the other big titles. They've been missing since DKCTF in 2013.
I compiled a little list of the 'core' Pokémon games a few pages back (below - may as well give it a second airing! ) to see if history would offer any clues and the loose pattern seems to be that a new generation comes along once every three years - so, assuming that Pokémon Switch will be 'Gen VIII', it'd usually be 'due' in 2019...
Pokémon Gen I - 1996 (JP) / 1998 (WW)
Pokémon Gen I+ (Yellow) - 1998 (JP) / 1999/2000 (WW) Pokémon Gen II - 1999 (JP) / 2000/2001 (WW)
Pokémon Gen II+ (Crystal) - 2000 (JP) / 2001 (WW) Pokémon Gen III - 2002 (JP) / 2003 (WW)
Pokémon FR/LG - 2004
Pokémon Gen III+ (Emerald) - 2004 (JP) / 2005 (WW) Pokémon Gen IV - 2006 (JP) / 2007 (WW)
Pokémon Gen IV+ (Platinum) - 2008 (JP) / 2009 (WW)
Pokémon HG/SS - 2009 (JP) / 2010 (WW) Pokémon Gen V - 2010 (JP) / 2011 (WW)
Pokémon Gen V+ - 2012 Pokémon Gen VI - 2013
Pokémon OR/AS - 2014 Pokémon Gen VII - 2016
Pokémon Gen VII+ - 2017
...but I wouldn't necessarily rule it out for next year: as @NEStalgia said, late-2018 would fit the known (rough) schedule outlined by Ishihara-san himself - plus, as @DarkRula pointed out, 2018 would tie in with the anime, which is usually a factor - and, as you can see above, Game Freak have mixed things up in the past - so you never know! ..I'm hoping that they're aiming for Holiday 2018, but stopped short of committing to 2018 at E3 to give themselves a few months 'breathing room' - it'd be a push to expect it any earlier I think - but I've been waiting half my life for a home console 'core' Pokémon game, so I'd happily wait a little longer if required! (..still just happy that one has finally been confirmed after all these years! )
@Caldorosso-E I don't know how reliable VG Chartz is, but they have the global platform sales as follows:
@NaviAndMii They're definitely a bit inaccurate. Sony recently announced that PS4 sales were past 70.6 million as of December 3rd, and the final Wii U sales are 13.56 million.
@IceClimbers That's because you're looking at early October numbers. The hardware sales are more than a month behind and don't include the Black Friday sales and other holiday sales yet.
@NaviAndMii Wow, X1's 2017 figures are behind not just Switch but 3DS? OUCH! That's pretty rocky to be behind a now semi-legacy handheld with your powerhouse console. Granted that doesn't factor in X1X launch.
@Octane VGChartz is infamously inaccurate though, so it's always worth taking with a grain of salt. They overestimated WiiU for example. Also I don't know if this is tallying units SOLD (badly) or units SHIPPED, but I'm betting the 70M figure is units shipped (meaning it includes those sitting on shelves and warehouse pallets that will be 2018 sales.)
Yeah, I noticed that VGChartz even has inconsistencies across its own website - with the front page and 'hardware sales' sections of the website each having different totals for some reason! ..but it gives a rough idea I guess - a good year for Nintendo, another good year for Sony, another pretty miserable year for Microsoft - and, as @Caldorosso-E pointed out, a GREAT year for those 0.09m people who picked up a WiiU on the cheap but still got to play the Game of the Year! ..the smart cookies!
...I also couldn't find individual figures for the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X on that website - it'd be interesting to see how much of a dent that Microsoft's belated-yet-super-powerful rival made in Sony's share of that corner of the market - but, yeah, looking at the 3DS's figures, it sure makes you realise why Nintendo are keeping it around! Great numbers!
If you could add one thing to the Switch, what would it be?
I'd like themes based on what Joycon you have on the console. You can unlock one color themes by connecting the Joycon to the Switch, but choosing "Custom" will let you mix and match the menus. In addition to this would be a "Menu Theme" that's optional, and remain the same over all colors. What changes is the two instruments used for Melody and Bass, i.e., Blue and Red would be Synth Violin and Electric Bass, where Pink and Green could be Piano and Drums.
Of course the option to have "Mario" or "Splatoon 2" themes is neat, but the main draw is the Switch-ability.

@NEStalgia Don't forget that XB1's 2017 lineup was rather weak. You had Halo Wars 2 in February, Forza 7 in September and Super Lucky's Tale in November for 1st party support. Due to lots of delays and lack of big games, the big 2017 hype source for XB1 ended up being 343 promising to fix Master Chief Collection in Spring 2018. Once MCC is actually fixed, you may start to see XB1 sale increases because of nostalgia.
Themes would be good for Switch, even if it's just different basic colours to start with. Maybe two side-by-side with some interesting divider. However, a more useful thing would be moving the all apps button from the end of the list to a permanent position where the eShop and other options are located. Give it some updated data management features as well.
As for a game, get Wuhu Island back onto the scene and just keep throwing stuff at it. Make it a base for game ideas that wouldn't fit elsewhere. Use the online app to at least replicate the WiiU's Gamepad and throw some Nintendoland-style games at it. Bring the entire Wii Sports collection into it [though can we have the option of proper button control, please?] as well as a few more. If you really have to, use it as a testing ground for ideas for full games in the future. If you want people to get that online subscription, this type of game is probably one to do it. Unless it's kept strictly local multiplayer or they don't include the open exploration as part of it. If they really wanted, they could design a new island to give a fresh lick of paint to stuff, but I'd still want Wuhu in there somewhere.
@Caldorosso-E
Pretty crazy, especially when you consider Wii U sold only 14mil in its entire life.
I really think 11 or 12 million Switches sold after the Holiday rush dust has settled is not outrageous (IF supply is as good as Nintendo is saying it is), and anywhere from 13-15 million by its first birthday is totally doable, especially with the Bayonetta announcement and IF (I don't think this will actually happen) the Kirby or Yoshi Switch games launch in Jan., Feb., or early March. And if we get that ever-alluring Smash port anytime soon? Craziness. That is going to be a beast of a game given the Switch's portability and multiplayer configurations.
@Spoony_Tech Yep, it really is brilliant. It's great with the Pro too, really strong. How have you been playing so far? I've tried vertical with one Joy-con attached using the touchscreen, docked with the Pro and vertical on my stand with the Pro. Going to try handheld next. Great having these options.
