Anti-Matter

Hiya, guys !
Which Micro SD card should i choose for Nintendo Switch ?
Sandisk 128 GB speed 80 or speed 100 ?
Does speed number matter for Download speed ?

Rhythm gonna hit your head.

JaxonH

Speed of 80mbps should be plenty. Anything beyond 60 is sufficient (and I've heard reports that those even with lower speeds had no issues despite warnings from games like LA Noire, although I personally wouldn't want to test it)

At this point I am legitimately afraid of what Nintendo is going to do for VC. If they even get half of the glory days of the Wii VC (with hopefully the new additions to the service that the WiiU brought) then I'm going to be broke for the next two years. What a fantastic time to be a gamer.

@Ryu_Niiyama At this point, I'm more afraid that they're going to try streaming classic games or something instead of letting us just download VC releases to our Switch.

It won't be streaming. It'd be more effort for Nintendo to do that and the end result would be worse for consumers. Game steaming only makes sense if the game is bigger than the machine you're using can handle. Not really much point doing it for a classic game service.

Subscription? Maybe. Streaming? No

Hey U.S. people, just noticed something weird. My Octopath Traveler demo is gone from my system, and I'm 99% sure I didn't delete it. At any rate, I went back to the eShop to redownload it, and the "you've purchased this" button is there, but it's grayed out, and there's nothing for me to click to download the demo again.

Also can't find anything in my data management.

Any ideas? Kind bummed... I really wanted to play it again.

Inertiacreep

@rallydefault maybe try to make like an AUS eshop account and see if it says the same thing?

But I'm pretty sure if a person actually did uninstall the demo it would allow you to download it again... or, does the switch have a games list like steam? Where you can just click to reinstall games?

I am curious as to whether it could have been the auto archive feature?

I see that each game has the option to toggle auto archive off (it's on by default for every game) but I'm not sure what triggers the system to archive a game. Perhaps a certain amount of time passing without you playing the game or maybe when a certain percentage of your space is used up it will start archiving from the back of the list... Idk.

@rallydefault Hey it's no longer there to dl for me either. It's exactly like you said you Can't select it. Can't remember if I deleted it for space or not but I'm pretty sure I heard that won't be the final name of the actual game and maybe that's why it was removed. Who know though.

Can confirm. I softmodded my Gamecube back in the day but only had regular size blank discs to burn games to, too big for the 'Cube drive. So I had to steam each disc for half an hour to shrink them down to the right size - it was a right PITA, but got the job done. But it didn't make sense to do it with retail games - they already fit!

@rallydefault There's a redownload option on eShop. Go to your account information by clicking your profile icon in the top-right corner.

Just checked, it's available for me to re download.

In fact I just tried it... it's downloading as I type this. Check your "All Software" on the right hand side.

I struggle with the idea of 'streaming' games - does it refer to a YouTube-like service, just for games instead of video? (ie. temporary/impermanent downloads rather than a 'hard' full download?) ..what'd be the thinking behind such a service?

@NaviAndMii It means that Nintendo runs the game and streams the video output to you (could be any device with a screen in theory), your button inputs are sent back to Nintendo. Basically it's a complicated system that has little use in gaming. As skywake already said, it's only practical when you're playing a game your device cannot run. Streaming NES games for example? That's a waste of resources.

The issue with a streaming service though is that Nintendo has to port, and pay people to do so, every game.

Which means they spend more momey to host each game.

Add in having to negotiate and pay a license fee to the relevant third parties on their games, on a game by game basis, itd be expensive.

And then you realise not everyone will play every game, so some releases would effectively be Nintendo sinking money just to have it on the service, and the fee for a streaming service would have to encompass all of those games, and it will only increase over time as Nintendo has to effectively pay these third party developers per "sale" regardless of it their game is played or not.

And why do I say it would be a subscription? Because thats how every other streaming service works, and people wont let Nintendo be different when it would make sense.

@YummyHappyPills I think the presence of games that hardly anyone plays (or wants to play) is the big advantage and lure of a Netflix style service.

They’re games that aren’t necessarily viable to re-release separately. But you sink the cost because every game is someone’s favourite so having as wide a range as possible gives the service scale.

Of course streaming is a terrible solution to any problem other than ‘how can I make a graphically intensive game from a generation ahead play on a device that shouldn’t be able to run it’.

A subscription service where you can download old games though is a great idea.

Game streaming reminds me of the XB1 mess in 2013. I still sometimes think about what would've happened if Sony fully unveiled the PS4 before Microsoft unveiled the XB1. Both companies focusing on "always online", maybe the Wii U would've ended up a massive success in that case.

Haruki_NLI

@StuTwo Heres the ultimate problem eith that.

If you have 500 games then and there...why buy new ones?

I mean hell look at the case for not having VC, what are the eShop charts on 3DS full of? Best selling games on the platform are VC.

In fact Im willing to bet VC wont be a thing to allow indies room to breathe.
