@MegaTen Oh dear, that's quite a few companies. How come Bethesda/Ubisoft/Sony?

@MegaTen I'm fine with REQ packs in Halo 5 and a few cases of loot boxes in the past but this year has gone too far. Even Overwatch went from fair loot boxes last year to full on real money grabbing, I lost interest in Overwatch a few months ago and the trade-in value went towards Sonic Forces.

@MegaTen
Why Bethesda? They're bringing 3 great games to Switch, and not a single one of them employs microtransactions or any shady monetization technique.

And they are one of the last developers in the industry to make single player focused FPS games, and without monetizing at that. If they don't see enough support, they will either resort to monetization or just stop making them. And that will be a severe blow not just for Switch owners, but all gamers.

Would it not be better to judge on a case-by-case basis? If the game employs monetization you do not approve of, then do not support that game, but if the game does not employ such tactics, should it not be supported? Not only because it's a great game and doesn't employee microtransactions, but also to send a message that these are the games we will support. Otherwise, when they resort to microtransactions because they weren't clocking in enough revenue, they'll actually be justified in doing so. We need to speak loud and clear that full, complete, single player focused games without microtransactions are what we want.

@MegaTen Hm, the one that comes to my mind, is how Bethesda has suddenly decided to handle their reviews (withholding them for no reason whatsoever) but other than that, I've no clue what you could mean (I'm asking, because I may very well have overlooked things).

@JaxonH I think it's about the lies regarding DOOM Switch, while the single player is on the cart you have to download the multiplayer update to play the single player.

Grumblevolcano

MFD

@MegaTen Oh, right, the creation club... I nearly forgot about that amidst EA and Monolith doing their Loot Box shenanigans. All the more reason to praise those who do not stray onto this path.

@Grumblevolcano
Lying?

Please link me to where they lied. They never said the download was optional. Gamers assumed that because gamers like to assume things. But just for the record it is optional- you can play the cart without the download. You may have to turn on airplane mode or something but it's definitely doable and confirmed (see DOOM thread). But even if it wasn't doable, they never claimed it was an optional download anyways... nobody lied.

They said the single player would be on cart and the multiplayer would be a download. And that's exactly what we have.

See, and here we have people boycotting their games over something they didn't even do. Which, maybe they have other reasons... but if they were wrong about this without even doing a google search to find out the truth, I would question how right they are about everything else they're upset about, or question if it's as bad as they actually think it is. Bethesda may not be a perfect company, but compared to most modern AAA developers they are definitely in the top 5%. I don't even boycott companies like EA and I despise EA. But Bethesda? Shoot, might as well just boycott Nintendo for their amiibo use, their refusal to put enough storage in their game systems, not dropping price on their games, refusing to allow voice chat in games or offer competent online, etc. Neither company is perfect but gosh, it would really take a lot for me to actually actively avoid buying games from a company. They would have to be like actively funding terrorism or something.

@MegaTen I've deliberately stayed away from Shadow of War, even though I wanted to buy it at first. I do not condone such practices, and those that are using loot-boxes and micro-transactions, and aren't reliant on them the way a free-to-play (and even then, no pay-to-win, only cosmetic) is, should be sent a message that this is NOT where it should go.

I remember playing a Star Wars game really long ago with vehicles, not sure what platform that was on. That was about the only Star Wars game I've enjoyed... Think it was on Gamecube actually.

@Grumblevolcano I hope it doesn't come to another crash. Consumers should up their ante and put their foot down to halt it here and now, then push it back.

I think given the way loot boxes have gone this year, it will be the source of another gaming crash like in the 80s. Maybe Nintendo will be the solution in this case too.

@JaxonH I was sure that they mentioned the single player was on the cart so you could get into the action straight away or something like that, I don't remember where though.

Finally got my micro SD card from best buy and, wouldn't you know, it's actually a faster 100 mb/s card, even though the one I bought said it was 80 mb/s or something like that!

@MegaTen Eh. I don't really get your beef with games having patches and updates, but you were hardly rude or nasty or anything, so there's no reason to apologize.

That attitude of "I won't whine about it anymore, but I'm still not happy about it" is the attitude I eventually adopted last year with regard to Nintendo's extensive censorship issues in localized games. Hopefully that'll be a non-issue now with Nintendo's newfound acceptance of adult-oriented games and increased communication between different branches with regard to the content in the games they publish.

Yes. I'd love to see that Star Wars on Switch. EA will never go for it though. They'll say no just to spite us.

And by the way can I just say DOOM is incredible. I was playing it at work today before I left and my coworkers gathered around and watched me. It plays so good and looks so good- even with split joycon it's really easy to control because the controls are just so great- The HD Rumble, when you perform a glory kill, is incredible- you can kind of flick the joycon to perform the glory kill but you can also click the right analog too- I was clicking the analog but I think I'm going to try making a habit of flicking the joycon a bit just because it seems more engaging.

But truly, the game is incredible. The best FPS games I've ever played on handheld previously have been Borderlands 2 and Killzone Mercenary. Neither were ideal because Vita was missing buttons and mapped certain actions to zones on the touchscreen and zones on the rear touchpad- so you ended up having to purposely not let your fingers rest on the back of the handheld, or else you would accidentally crouch or zoom your weapon or run. It was insanely uncomfortable and borderline unplayable, and that's before mentioning the pop-in or 15 frames per second gameplay. It was a rickety old port but, it offered a great FPS on the go, and there really weren't any better alternatives.

Killzone ran smoothly, but the game just wasn't that great and the analogues on the Vita (despite all the praise they received) were way too tiny with not enough travel. People think the joycon have small analogs, but you haven't seen a small analog until you've played Vita. In fact, I even preferred the 3DS analog- because it moved along a diametral plane rather spherical travel, actually offered more movement than Vita.

But DOOM on Switch? It's uneqivocally the greatest handheld FPS ever made. Without question. I can't believe how fun it is and it really feels like a Nintendo-type game. Like it suits the system so well. It might seem foreign to a lot of people because the last two consoles have lacked these types of games. But this feels like a long, lost Nintendo 1st party game that has made a triumphant return. It's just so dang fun.

I hope as many people give this game a chance as possible because it truly deserves it, I think. And one more thing- I really don't like a lot of gore and violence. Don't like horror games either. But it doesn't seem that bad when playing on Switch. I don't know, it just feels more toned down and less brutal. Maybe because it's not quite as detailed, and certainly when you're playing on the smaller screen you don't notice all the gory details as much.

@JaxonH I saw it docked, it did indeed look great. Personally I don't play shooters without a mouse, but I'm sure there will be plenty of others who don't have such reservations.

My favourite handheld FPS is 007 Nightfire on GBA. Though I liked the home console version much more, the GBA version was different and fun enough that I'd gladly play both. I really miss that era of EA, they actually had some really fun games back then. Now they're just a massive microtransaction mess.

Is there really anything to DOOM aside from running around and shooting stuff? That just doesn't sound fun to me, but I must be missing something.

A new Rogue Squadron game would be awesome. I'm not much of a Star Wars anymore, but I loved the first three RS titles so much.

There's two things that would put me off though..

1) EA owning the SW license.
2) The game being based around Disney's new SW universe with terrible characters like Rey and Darth Whatshisface.

@KirbyTheVampire
Well, the game is mostly shooting and killing demons, but there's also tons of secrets like Wolfenstein. Secret areas, collectibles, occasionally needing to find a badge card to access a door, stuff like that. But the meat of the game is the shooting, and while it may sound like it would get boring I have to say it really doesn't.

It's like someone else put it- some primal instinct kicks in when you play this game and you just react. It appeals to some inner primal nature where you fight for survival and it kicks your adrenaline in so hard that it's a constant rush from start to finish. I don't really know how else to put it, but the game is so smooth and it's just so much fun shooting demons, especially the mechanic where you stun them and they glow blue and you can run up to them and click the analog (or flick the joycon) to do a glory kill.

There is no safe retreat, there is no health regeneration. You pick up armor pieces around the levels and arena like areas, and you pick up ammo that you'll find laying on the ground as well. Health comes from performing glory kills and it always drops health.

And unlike most other FPS this is not a linear corridor shooter. The levels are very open and you will do a little backtracking- I hate to draw a comparison to Metroid Prime because the games are significantly different, but there is a comparison to be made I think. And I'm not sure if I can put my finger on exactly what it is, but it's there.

When you mix it all together- your open levels and the constant rush of adrenaline from that primal instinct and fight or flight reactionary gameplay, strategizing glory kills to gain health and picking up armor around the levels as you're constantly moving, finding secret passage ways and collectibles (like this little DOOM Guy POP figure thing, was so awesome), trying to find badge cards to get in through certain doors or eliminating all threats in an area before a door will unlock, smoothly climbing up ledges, the double jump... when you mix it all together with absolutely impeccable gameplay that is so smooth and fluid with some of the best controls I've ever experienced in an FPS game... The answer is no, it isn't boring- it's the farthest thing from boring, in fact.

And that's making no mention of the arcade mode, or multiplayer. Even just playing team deathmatch with bots is so much fun I wanted to call into work this morning. I'm not a big FPS guy but, I love this game... so much. It really takes me back to the days of the N64, when we used to actually get games like this. It takes me back to the days of playing Goldeneye.

Hmm, that does sound interesting. Might pick it up on the PS4 if it's not full price anymore.
