The only Wii U years that had a big holiday game were 2013 (3D World) and 2014 (Smash). What did 2015 have?.
True. But surely the Wii U isn't the level of success that Nintendo want to emulate?
Also in terms of mitigating factors 2015 was clearly meant to be Zelda at one point (but it slipped... a lot) and by 2016 they would certainly have released Zelda if they'd not been holding it back for the Switch launch. In 2015 Nintendo made a big deal out of Mario Maker but - as great as it turned out to be - it wasn't really the best basket for them to have put all of their eggs in.
Yeah, Wii U was:
2012 - NSMBU
2013 - SM3DW
2014 - Smash
2015 - Super Mario Maker (released slightly before the holiday season to line up with SMB's 1985 release date)
2016 - Would've been BotW if not for Switch launching early 2017
@Tsurii Holiday first party games are those which Nintendo/Sony/Microsoft (if they ever have any) consider to be big system sellers. I don't know whether Fire Emblem or a 2D Yoshi can be considered to be in that category, despite how successful Fire Emblem has gotten since Awakening. Though I do admit Yoshi looks absolutely gorgeous from what I saw in the Treehouse live stream.

Remember that Pokémon is a franchise. A new generation will affect all parts, such as the trading cards and toys. I am quite sure they want to consolidate all the releases to get the most bang for their marketing.
Do we know that the Switch version will be the first game of a new generation? For all we know it's a full HD quality remake of Diamond and Pearl that's squarely within Gen VII by not adding anything beyond the Sun/Moon pokedex. Maybe it's a "next game in the same generation" sort of thing in the same way that Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon are. For all we know it's something entirely different that we won't really know how to categorise.

@Hieronymus-E I seem to recall that Ishihara-san said that the Switch title would be a mainline entry in the Pokémon series, so I'm pretty sure it'll be a proper 'core' Pokémon game...but whether that'll be the follow up to US/UM is anyone's guess really! We are starting to see more-and-more developers shifting their focus on to making games for the Switch instead of the 3DS - which could be a slightly worrying sign for the platform - but, until Nintendo can replace the 3DS/2DS with another 'budget' console (Switch Mini?) I still think that there's life in the ol' thing yet! Who knows, maybe 'Pokémon Switch' will come to 3DS as well? It'd be pretty cool if it did!
So, let's assume Pokémon doesn't make November 2018 (personally I think it has to, because Metroid Prime 4 will take November 2019 and Nov 2020 will go to some unannounced title, perhaps even another Pokémon since it'll have been 2 years and the engine will already be developed). What other games are big enough to take that slot?
Maybe they are willing to push Fire Emblem into that slot in an effort to broaden its success. If it's a shiny new entry with amazing graphics and cut scenes... perhaps. I do think it's coming in the latter half of the year because they've already got a nice lineup for spring- Yoshi, Kirby, Lost Sphear, Octopath Traveller, Dragon Quest Builders, and whatever else they announce in the December Direct.
But what other games could take the holiday spot? Animal Crossing, Metroid, maybe Luigi's Mansion... a new IP (if it's big enough, and Retro's project has been cooking for 4 years already and isn't even revealed so whatever it is I have a feeling it's going to be huge, and I definitely think it's going to be a new IP). Perhaps Mario Maker, or, a new 2D Mario in a different style (perhaps we finally get a modern sequel to Super Mario World?)...

hopefully Retro is not working on another Donkey Kong. I'm hoping they are making a new IP... but Retro is a shadow of its former self. most of their talent went on to make Halos and Destinies. Bleh!
Having them do another DK is just a waste. I doubt Nintendo is even working on another just yet. I can see one coming though before the end of the Switches life. Whatever they've been working on had to start out as a Wii U game.

If I was only ever able to have Monster Hunter and EO games in the future, I would be a happy man.
I can't be the only person who wants Retro to do another DK game? Tropical Freeze was one of the best Wiiu games on that system. Game is a masterpiece.
The Harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. When the going gets tough, the tough gets going.
@Hieronymus-E There isnt much precedent for this either. HG/SS was followed a year later by BW.
Who knows. There is historical evidence pointing both ways.
But since 2010 a new generation has been released every third year. This is a strong hint that they in recent years have a set time frame for generations. So 2019 should be the start of next gen.
Remember even if Nintendo owns the Pokémon company, PC is still making their own decisions.
With that said, it is still possible there is a new game next year. But I wouldn't count on it being the generation 8.
