@meleebrawler @BLP_Software true, and true. I have no desire to talk to randoms, but I would enjoy voice chat in Squads.

According to Gamexplain, you can't even pull down your notification panel without cutting out the chat. I've never even heard of an app having that problem.

Got married.

I'm "vested" in this simply to project a different perspective.

Anyway, I've said my piece. You haven't persuaded me just as I apparently haven't persuaded you. Time will tell the rest.

@Octane What baffles me is that people want to talk with random players.

And hey. If they know Japanese then great XD

This confuses me also. Like, I've seen people complain that they can't read けんじ and ともこ's names when they come online, but at the same time they also seem really keen to strike up conversation with them.

"Hey けんじ! What's up man! I've got no idea what you're saying, or even how to read your name, but isn't it great we can finally speak together!? It's so cool how Nintendo has resolved this issue and definitely hasn't created any new problems involving language barriers or anything like that. What's that? You didn't understand anything I just said either? Oh, けんじ! You are funny sometimes!"

I really can't see 'no random voice' chat as a legitimate complaint in this game.

Now having a shoddy private voice chat service? That complaint carries a fair bit more weight.

The app attacks continue.

Well, hope it'll be good for squads. I may try and jump into one once I get a hang of the game.

My honest opinion about the app...

It's garbage. Insultingly bad. I and the other I play with are just going to use Discord, and that's the end of that. I'm buying that Splatoon headset for the adapter so I can still merge audio from the chat and game (hoping it doesn't matter what app you use- audio is audio). You can matchmake without the app, so really... no reason to use it.

Except for the fact it facilitates team chat while muting everyone else. That's the one thing this app does right. So, I may use it... but honestly, I think the strategy of voice chat in Splatoon is overrated. Oh hey, I'm painting the right, wait now I'm in the middle, oh wait I just got splatted, who needs help I'll superjump to you, I'm open, wait which one are you?

In any case, screw Nintendo's app. I'd have rather had Wii U voice chat than this. Cause at least Wii U didn't actively deny voice chat in every game like Switch does (where's MHXX voice chat? Even MH3U had it!). Their voice chat system is a total, epic fail, and I've washed my hands of it.

Thankfully, I never cared much for chatting anyways, and in the rare instance (like, 3 times in 5 years rare) I do I will happily use Discord.

@JaxonH You know how many people I've seen who share your opinion? Yesterday, it seems, was a bad day for Nintendo - but a very, very good day for Discord!

There is hope, I guess, in that this new app can be updated and improved over time...but when there's a free-to-use, flexible, non-restrictive option already out there in Discord - it seems like Nintendo have really dropped the ball!

@NaviAndMii
They should have made it built in the system itself.

But you know, I'm just grateful that of all the aspects of the system they could mess up, it's something I don't really care about. Better this than a slow OS, or no instant screencaps, or regionlock, or games tied to hardware. And I'm grateful there's a legit solution as well, just in case.

But, Idk, maybe it's better in practice than it sounds. I'll give it a try. I might be blowing things out of proportion a bit, like, I never get calls and if I can just hook it up and it works fine... maybe it won't be so bad. Phone has dim settings and medium power save, which should ensure it's not a major drain

@JaxonH It is the "limited" version and will improve in time but the question is just how limited is it compared to full version that will arrive next year. Maybe this is only a tiny part of what it will eventually become or perhaps not and what we have now is more or less what it'll be when the paid service arrives, minus a few tweaks here or there. I'm leaning towards the former myself. Although if that is the plan then they really should have ensured it was better at launch than it currently is. They've just opened themselves up for ridicule in the media and it may even put off potential buyers.

Personally I have zero interest in voice chat and would prefer it wasn't in Splatoon at all,in game at least. I do have hopes for an ever evolving Nintendo app though that can be a hub for everything as well as voice chat . News channels, MyNintendo, browse the Eshop and make purchases, game specific channels like Splatnet, MKTV, Smashnet that has all your stats and a place we can share in game screenshots etc.

Or maybe none of that will happen and what we have now is basically what we're getting.

@JaxonH Oh sure, I agree ..we've got a snappy OS and the majority of the power going in to running the games - that's no bad thing - especially as the Switch lags behind the PS4 and X1S in the performance stakes...every little bit extra they can squeeze out of it, performance-wise, keeps that gap as small as possible ..and, you know, at least Discord exists as an alternative - it's not ideal, but it does act as some kind of 'workaround' if people don't really like Nintendo's own solution.

..plus, as @OorWullie says, this was only ever billed as a 'limited' version of the app - so perhaps we shouldn't read too much in to it? ..would have hoped for a more positive reception for app v1.0 though, for sure!

@JaxonH the share function on PS4 is slow. It loads a menu and you still control the game while navigating. The menu takes a bit to load, moving in the menu moves you in game, then to save a screenshot it has to load a seperate page!

Ah, gotchya. Ya, that's why I don't take screenshots on PS4... or X1 for that matter. Too cumbersome, won't use it.

@DarthNocturnal It's even easier if you have the chatpad. Literally you press a button (X1, X2) dependent on whether you want a screenshot or clip.

@BLP_Software What? You just press the share button and it sends the screenshot to your gallery. What are you talking about?

This app is classic, modern Nintendo. They took something that should be super simple: <enters game: plugs in headset to controller or possibly system: sets chat options through game menus: plays game and chats> and made it into a tangle of wires and inconvenient smartphone necessities (don't you dare check that text - KEEP THE APP FULLSCREEN OR YOU'RE TOAST).

THIS is what I was trying to say in my discussion yesterday. Nintendo isn't out of the woods yet with the Switch. Yea, they had a successful launch, but now Nintendo is going to do that thing where they snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Don't kid yourselves that this online app won't be a big turn-off to a large group of gamers who were otherwise considering a Switch.

Nintendo needs to go back to the drawing board and figure this out. The app is convenient for looking at stats, maybe even organizing friends and stuff, but I still think they need to figure out a way to just route headsets directly through the console.
