It's funny how people are split on how they're reacting to it getting delayed till 2018. YouTube videos tend to either praise the fact that online is free for longer like I did, or criticize Nintendo for delaying the new features. It goes to show how disappointed you were about the end of free online to begin with (and probably says something about your disposable income).

Anyway, I hope they do expand the service beyond NES games at some point, even if it's years down the line. I'm not old enough to have grown up with classic NES games, so I'm much more interested in being able to play SNES and N64 games online.

Bingo. Like, you don't have to spend any money for the rest of the year.
Internet will be internet, I guess.

God first.

@SLIGEACH_EIRE I agree.

The overall impression is that Nintendo doesn't have a real cohesive plan yet. That's not necessarily a problem but it means they can't announce anything (worse yet - things are being leaked out piecemeal over time).

Because of this they're ceding control of the narrative. There are some potentially very positive and clever things about Nintendo's online plans but if you want to write an article or jump on forums shouting "Nintendo doesn't have a clue about online" or "the worst thing about Nintendo's online plans"? Nintendo has basically given you the greenlight.

@Yellowtails Yeah, it's difficult to get excited about any potential 'SNES Classic'....unless you're an eBay scalper - then it's your dream console!

Seconded.

That's insane. Like, literally that reaction is not sane.

I'm a bit confused. Which kind of reaction are you all saying is not sane? If it's the kind that's excited to delay paying for internet for another year, then I don't see what's so insane about that. Especially since before, I was under the assumption that internet might be $10 a month like the competition, and I would have refrained from it. It's wouldn't have been responsible of me.

Why not? The service sounds sweet, and more than worth $20/year.

Currently Playing: Metroid Prime 4: Beyond (NS2); Corpse Factory (PC)

Nicolai

@Ralizah Yeah, which is why I'm happy that I can get it now, because that's well within my price range. But $60 a year would have been too much, since I'm still working part time jobs and freelance at this stage of my life, and I don't have the budget for luxuries that lose their value after they're paid. And I can't remember whether the competition does $60 or $120.

@KirbyTheVampire, I see where they're coming from too, because in their eyes, the moment Nintendo starts charging for online is the moment they have less of an excuse to not improve upon it. I just personally don't care about that, because I've been happy with Nintendo's online so far.

@Nicolaison PS+ is $60/year. Way overpriced, imo.

@Octane Not Nintendo's, it appears. I'm not even going to notice this on my bank statements.

For what Nintendo typically offers in terms of online services I'd say it's overpriced. But that'd go for the other two as well anyway. So I'm just glad it's not as overpriced as the others.

Few things I'm not thrilled about...

One, the clumsy solution to voice chat. Yeah, I'm happy it's coming but, it's still saying "for compatible games". Meaning it'll basically be no different than Wii U, with a few select online games having chat, the only difference is you'll be able to voice chat while playing. But at the expense of a clumsy setup involving a splitter, phone and 3 cords, and even then you can't voice chat with strangers.

Certain games that had voice chat in them already have launched without it on Switch due to the app not being there. Games that would have had voice chat day one, had they launched on Wii U. Like Mario Kart 8. This is kind of aggravating to me.

Two, is the uncertainty of virtual console. I don't want to have to buy an NES Mini to play NES games, and a SNES Mini to play SNES games, and so on. I have enough consoles hooked up to my TV as is. I had zero complaints with Wii U VC. Just released the same games and I'll be happy. Because this time they will be in HD on a handheld and console together. Toss in GC and I'll be blissfully satisfied.

But now I'm concerned they won't release VC, and will restrict it to only the online NES games (they don't even know if they're going to do SNES, which would be perfectly fine if they would just confirm VC is coming at some point- it doesn't have to be right away- I'm a patient man... just so long as it's coming)

Psalms 22:16 (1,000 yrs before Christ)
They pierced My hands and feet
Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)
He was pierced for our transgressions
Zachariah 12:10 (500 yrs before Christ)
They will look on Me whom they pierced

Ralizah

@Octane Depends on what they offer and how much they charge. If Nintendo offers good discounts on digital games and provides a decent number of online-supported classic Nintendo games, $20/year will be a great price.

PS+ is a pretty decent service, but only if you're heavily invested in the PS ecosystem.

I have to say, I really hope we hear about cloud saving soon from Nintendo. That would be another great incentive to pay for NSO.

Not sure if this was posted here yet or not, but the online service will NOT replace the Virtual Console.

@Nicolaison That can also be pretty dangerous. The price is small, so people don't care. That's why micro transactions work.

Steam does it for free, so I'll keep questioning paid services, because it's just another way for the company to leech a bit more off you. In the end, what's the difference between this and the Wii U service? That was free. It worked, I didn't have any issues at least. Voice chat is even more convoluted than it was before... What's new?
