I'd like to see some of the mysteries explained and maybe some skyloft or twilight realm crossover, (there is evidence that could happen) AND they have to let us pet dogs
Games I'm playing right now:
Tears of the Kingdom - Switch
Switch Physical Collection - 1,251 games (as of April 24th, 2024)

Aside from the weapon system being improved (let us craft, repair, or buy weapons), I'd like to see the shrines system more streamlined so that we don't need to amass so much Wisdom Orbs to increase our stats.
Pretty much this...exploring in BotW, yeah it was fun...but it got pretty boring quickly for me. The dungeons were...forgettable, the bosses all looked the same with the little changes here and there. The music, almost non-existent, the shrines were neat I guess, but they all looked the same, and shows that normal traditional dungeons could've been a thing...The....freaking...weapon...breaking.
I'm not really excited for this sequel, but will keep an eye on it just in case. But honestly, the fact that it's going to remain open world I can already tell that I won't like it. I never liked open world games, just...after messing with for a bit they make me want to play something else.
Didn't even beat the game, struggled to make myself bother to complete the 4 dungeons, and once I got to the castle I just stopped caring completely. I did think about giving the game another try on Switch, but...nah, I got other games to play.
I mostly just want better sidequests, more to whatever the main quests are and some interesting activities beyond 200 shrines (1/5 of which really didn't need to be shrines). Also for the shrines to have quicker load times.
BotW was a great game, but after beating it I went back and played Twilight Princess, and really wish the best of BotW was combined with the traditional Zelda formula. Something like:
. Open world. I can't go back to a linear one after Nintendo nailed it first try.
. Immersive soundtrack. Doesn't need to be fully orchestrated, but should suit the atmosphere.
. Dungeons. The shrines were easy and I miss the challenge of a classic Zelda dungeon. Even sliding block challenges are intuitive.
. A good story that doesn't take the easy way out and gives us a happy ending. Make it rewarding. Even if it means making a cool character and killing them off, make sure their sacrifice was worth it.
. Combine physics-based puzzles with traditional Zelda items, such as the Clawshot, the Spinner, a Beetle-like item. Might have to sacrifice something like the X jump button, or swap the runes with items, but it isn't impossible.
. More voice acting. Some casting was dubious in the original game, but everyone proved why they were chosen in Age of Calamity, and there were some great scenes illuminated by the acting. AoC had just under two hours of movies, hopefully we can get somewhere around four or five in the new game?
Currently playing:
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
Persona 4 Golden
Dragon Quest XI S
F1 23
Xenoblade Chronicles 2
Sandbox areas: I love the exploring, but wouldn't it just be fun to have areas that are there to mess about in? A parkour area, a skate/shield surf area, etc
More hidden items - love all the korok puzzles, but the reward is a... Korok
More villages and villagers - no idea how they all survive so far apart surrounded by monsters
Play as Zelda!
Ive said it before, but using magnesis as the hookshot or iron boots
Underwater areas
Less rain
But keep:
Weapon durability. Makes you think about what you are doing, and stops you being too powerful
Story in flashback. Well maybe not exactly the same, but I liked the way it was told without interfering with the game.
More weapon types - I'd love to see one-handed axes or Morning stars
I'd love to see some dungeons
And what I really hope for is that new champions get chosen and some story evolves around them.
Lastly I want my BotW save file to matter - give me something for it, kinda like a New Game+ or something :]
Things I wouldn't expect to see. Surprises! Ideas that other developers wouldn't even have considered! Something that continually rewards my curiosity throughout the many hours taken to finish the game!
Most importantly I wouldn't like to see them bow to pressure from a vocal minority of Zelda fans. The developers know better than we do the implications of their design choices and why they made them to begin with (even if they might choose to pursue different objectives or to realise them in a different way second time around).
What i would really like to see for BotW2 is to try and get a little closer to the older Zelda formula while not destroying stuff that made the first BotW so great. For example improving the dungeon and item variety, maybe make a more engaging story that unfolds around you, but obviously keep the atmosphere on the overworld, the difficulty and so on... It has mostly been already mentioned by other people in this thread.
One thing i havent read though and that would be a big plus for me is the return of Koji Kondo or if not possible: the return of more memorable Zelda music which are not remixes and not just atmospheric pieces. I don't even mean Hyrule Field bangers but maybe interesting dungeon themes, village and city themes or just themes for important spots in the game.

It's cool that you found the weapon system interesting in BotW. Personally I've never cared for item degradation in my video games. Unless it's a system that's easily curbed through in-game currency (Diablo III) and/or crafting (Minecraft) it just feels like busy-work to pad a game's time for completion.
I see many say they've played BotW for 200+ hours. Well, when you're running around collecting korok seeds and weapons all day I understand how that could happen. I'm a traditionalist, BotW is best described as "not my Zelda". I much prefer Link's Awakening.

Part of the beauty of BOTW is how scary the guardians are. They are scary, but SO fun. It's so entertaining. I hope there's a new slant on them, or an enemey that fills that spot.
I liked the shrines.
@SwitchForce Heck yeah. More open world, I'm with ya on that!
