That really should be your first question.

I’m loving the game so far. The scalable difficulty will hopefully keep me playing until the end as it’s quite challenging already.

I hope we have a thread (this one?) for recommended user created content.

I’m not interested in creating any campaigns myself, but I’m excited to give some a spin.

When I started playing this I was afraid it would be too easy (it was easy even for tutorial maps). However, I can confirm that this game is NOT easy and provides a good, fun challenge. I’m having a blast! Such a good turn based strategy game.

Will also echo what others have said and say that this game is definitely it’s own. It’s obviously influenced by advance wars and fire emblem, but has so many of its own quirks and features that it feels fresh.

Unbelievable quality considering the price. If this had been developed by Nintendo it would have had a fifty quid price tag, which I would have gladly paid.

One thing I am really noticing about this game is that the AI is distinctly smarter than Advance Wars. The AI wont casually walk into range of your trebuchets and archers. In Advance Wars that was something I abused heavily. Also I love using my commander as a decoy. The AI will often chase the commander into range of those units. It's a very fun risk/reward strategy.

The biggest pros are solid gameplay, memorable characters, beautiful art-style and animation of 2D sprites, great music and mountains of replay-ability due to the ability to make and share custom content.
The biggest con I can think of is how gaining a resource advantage can snowball very quickly. And yes the game is very fun!

Out of curiosity, how does this compare to Tiny Metal? I'm pretty interested in this game but I'm still on the fence. I'm a huge Advance Wars and Fire Emblem fan so both games have been on my radar for a while now.

I just started playing it and It's so charming. The graphics, music, characters etc. Sometimes you can tell right away that you'll love a game, this is one of those times for sure.

@Onion There is no comparison. As far as I am concerned, this game surpasses Tiny Metal in basically every way. Stylistically it is very much like Advance Wars and Fire Emblem were on GBA and DS. Where Tiny Metal opps for a different sort of 2.5D style. Mechanically if you played Advance Wars you will be instantly comfortable with Wargroove. Further, while Tiny Metal lacked multi-player initially and as far as I know has no map editor to speak of, Wargroove has both off the bat. In terms of game play it feels like a natural evolution of both Fire Emblem and Advance Wars. Boasting elements from both, with some fringe inspiration from Final Fantasy Tactics Advance too. Going a step further, Wargroove has not only a map editor, but the tools to allow you to build a full custom campaign, complete with cut scenes and you can share that content with anyone. Wargroove is also fully cross play compatible with the Switch, Xbone and Steam versions of the game. Further, despite the update, Tiny Metal is only 2 player, where Wargroove is up to 4.

If the question is Wargroove or Tiny Metal, no question, Wargroove is the superior game. And to top it all off, Wargroove is 5 dollars cheaper, with a whole hell of a lot more content!

Sweet, that's basically all I needed to hear! Soon as I finish Xenoblade 2 and FE Warriors, I'll probably pick it up. Tiny Metal was supposed to have a map editor of some kind I believe, but I'm not sure if it lived up to that. I know it didn't start with multiplayer and it had to be patched in later, which is already pretty bad. I actually had no idea that this game had cross play, which will be pretty handy if my friends pick up the Steam version.

Turns out side missions don't disappear if you continue with the main campaign before completing them, I was struggling with Act 3 Side 1 too much but Side 2 and Mission 2 were a lot easier.

@ReaderRagfihs I don't believe so. If it was I never heard about it.

@Grumblevolcano Was that the mission with Caesar where you had to defend the settlement? Cause that mission was a hell of a fight! I was ecstatic when I pulled a 3 star A rank on it!

The game gets a lot less frustrating when you discover that getting 3 stars is only tied to completing maps in the fewest turns. I was repeating them and expecting that getting almost no unit deaths was a requirement but apparently not.

@Kai_ Yeah knowing that the regular units really are totally disposable does make completing maps faster, easier. But I am not the biggest fan of that method of ranking. To the degree that it makes me not really care much about getting a good rank.

I have to say, the saving in this game is so freaking fast, that the first time I hit "save and exit" from the campaign, I was worried the game glitched and didn't actually do anything. I went back into the campaign to see if it had actually saved! It's as close to instant as it can probably be. I'm used to there being at least 5-15 seconds for a game to save.

Well the Advance Wars 1 AI was predictable / had questionable choices. The best being how it always would prefer to attack your APCs, instead of attacking Infantry that were capturing the HQ. XD

Advance Wars 2 & DS did improve the AI, so there's that. Although some rare cases, they like to walk into the area where the Indirect Unit can attach them. XD

So this morning I realized that Muru's Groove-power is kinda nuts. It is so OP being able to just spawn a ready-made unit anywhere like she does. Having a commander walk up and just poop out a ready made-ready to move/attack unit is pretty nuts. Get her within dragon/bomber range of the enemy stronghold just poop out a dragon - swoop in and do the deed.

@RadioShadow They did improve it, but I still found it pretty easy to lure them into range of my rockets even in Dual Strike.

Reviewer on Switch Watch said he finds this is the kind of game you dip your toes into on the side whilst having a main game as your focus. I guess I can relate to this, as I've mainly been playing Breath of the Wild, as well as some Puyo Puyo Tetris and Tales of Vesperia. I suppose the difficulty puts me off more sustained playing sessions.

I don't know that I agree with that position. Not saying one has to focus entirely on Wargroove, but it is not the small sort of game I would think of as a side thing like PuyoPuyo-Tetris.

I've been playing a lot since launch but now I'm stuck. The first level in the desert is kicking my butt. I've tried every strategy I can think of but the enemy starts too strong and I get overwhelmed. Any ideas?

Grandiajet

Heavyarms55

@Grandiajet That's the one where you start in the west and are fighting the border guards, right? There is a barracks to the north, you need to take that ASAP. Then focus on securing your side of the map. Don't push into the enemy territory until you have control of your own. In the beginning I just spammed swordsmen and took the towns as fast as I could. Then I built archers to prey on enemies entering my side. Finally I abused Muru's power to drop trebuchets that could fire instantly. Also don't try to enter from all three gates. Defend 2 and attack from one. Try to take an enemy barracks either in the south or north to cripple them. Don't go into the center, or you will be fighting enemies from all sides.

@Heavyarms55 Thanks for the tips!

I am actually half way through another try and think I've nailed it. One thing about the AI in this game, which is generally much better than Advanced Wars, is that they ALWAYS go after your commander. I've used this to my advantage and sent her north. It brought me a load of time to save and buy units.
