Yeah it’s not the best looking game, but I’m having a lot of fun with it. Who knows if we’ll ever get Mass Effect so this is filling that gap nicely and the shooting feels really good.

@GeeEmm Agreed, it isn't great looking, but it isn't nearly as bad as some have made it out to be, at least in my opinion. So far in my experience with it (about 10 hours so far), I haven't encountered any of the severe issues that some have been reporting. It has ran fairly well, a bit of slowdown in really busy areas and intense firefights, but I kinda expected that. Hopefully, they will continue to patch and improve the game, but I am enjoying what is here now.

I heard there was supposed to be a big update for the game at launch and there was talk of it fixing some of the issues people were having. Has that update happened and did it help?

@GeeEmm @Ecto-1 Yeah, I'm with you guys. I'm also about 10 or 15 hours in and I'm having an absolute blast. It's obviously not the best looking game ever, but it's not that bad and the game has played fine for me so far. I'm still glad I waited for the Switch version instead of going for a superior version, as the Switch is just the more convenient platform for playing RPGs (for me anyways).

@Heavyarms55 Unfortunately most outlets were playing the day one patch version. The "day one" patch was live a while before launch.

@Reprise Same here, I haven't had any reason to regret playing this on switch. I played a bit on gamepass, just to get an idea of if it would be the kind of game I would enjoy, but switch is going to be my first full playthrough. I do wonder if Gamexplain had the patch installed though; their issues seemed so much more extreme than everyone elses, and I have not seen the spinning circle loading thing in my entire 15 hours so far in the game.

@Ecto-1 I can't say whether Gamexplain had the patch installed, but Digital Foundry definitely did, as they mentioned it and stated they played version 1.01, which matches with the day one patch. I'm not sure whether Gamexplain just found the very worst examples they could find, nitpicked and put it into a short 5 minute (or whatever it was) video that made the game seem way worse than it actually is or what, but I haven't had many of the issues they had either. I have had the spinning loading circle whilst exploring, but the loading pause has literally been anywhere between just 1 second and about 5 seconds and it has happened just a small handful of times. It's really not a big deal.

But yeah, I don't want to argue with anyone who has a different opinion, but to me it's an incredible game that shines through on the Switch regardless of graphical imperfections and downgrades. I'm somewhat surprised by some of the reactions, as although it's obviously not of the same quality as some of the other AAA 'impossible' ports, it's also not bad either. It's a solid port in my opinion.

Dusk

I've got a question for the ones who got the game:
I'm considering buying it, love RPGs with good companions and story.
I've got a PC that can run it and a PS4, but I kinda dislike playing on those unless I really have no other option (AKA Persona 5/Final Fantasy XV). How bad is it compared to the other versions? I read so many conflicting stuff. I don't really mind if it's a visual downgrade, Witcher 3 still looks stunning for example, but I do mind if it runs poorly.
Any help?

I really want this, but I’m worried about the performance issues

@Dusk Its really going to come down to personal preference. I would look at videos of it online. Personally, I would recommend looking at just pure gameplay videos to keep bias out of it so you can make your own determination. I have played a bit of it on xbox and I am not about 15 hours into the switch version, and I don't feel like I am really missing anything but there are certainly others who feel differently. I notice some of the visual downgrades, but they aren't enough to take me out of the experience or ruin the game for me.

@Dusk Well, it's hard to say. What is acceptable to me and others might not be to you. I will say it is a more noticeable downgrade than The Witcher 3, but it's still playable. The framerate seems fairly solid at 30fps to me. I will say I am like you; I have a PS4 and did have a decent PC and I just prefer playing on the Switch, particularly RPGs, as it's way more convenient. I'd watch some gameplay on Youtube and see what you think.

Good review here:

Summary: Great game; terrible Switch port. He really likes the game and enjoys playing it but recommends it for the Switch only if that is your primary platform, but he suggests you wait for a sale because of the significant graphical compromises — and that you really should get it for another platform if one is available to you.

Noticed GameStop recently dropped the price of this game to $39.99. That puts it into the "tempting" range for me even knowing the problems with the graphics and performance.

Edit: Okay, so with a $5 coupon I had, the total was $37 with tax. Not bad. Hopefully the developer comes through with a patch to fix up the more egregious issues, but I'm satisfied with that price regardless (although I suspect this game will receive an even deeper discount before the end of the year). Now to wait for several gigabyes worth of data to download so I can play it.

Curiously, while one area store had a used copy, it was still selling for $54.99. I asked if the price would come down to match the sale price but was told that since this is a publisher sale and not a GameStop sale that the used price wouldn't be affected.

So I played for a couple of hours. First impressions are reasonably positive, but perhaps that's the virtue of having low expectations. There are times the graphics are really not bad, and you can see that it has the potential to be a very pretty game, but then there are other times when the dynamic resolution aggressively kicks in, and it reminds me of Xenoblade Chronicles on the 3DS where things just look blurry and indistinct. And then around the two hour mark, the game started to stutter whereas it was reasonably smooth playing up to that point. Which is to say that everything you've heard about the visuals and performance is true. I'm hoping the developer can do some fine tuning to smooth out the wrinkles. Otherwise, it's enjoyable enough.

@Mountain_Man thanks for the update. This game is still on my radar (and many others' I presume) so it's good to know where we stand.

Honestly, the game is fine.

I suppose it depends on your definition of "fine". I haven't encountered anything that significantly interferes with the gameplay, but there are times the subpar visuals can be distracting. I think "playable but ugly" is probably the best description. I've put about 8-hours into it so far, and I do like the game, but individual mileage will vary depending on your tolerance for what I can only describe as a second rate presentation.

Is it worse than YS 8? I played that game on Switch and it was amazing, but the visuals were incredibly bad.

I never played YS 8. What I can tell you is that the Digital Foundry and Switch Up videos give a very good idea what to expect from Outer Worlds on the Switch. They do not in any way overstate the technical issues.
