So, if Zelda U's main villain is new, as Aonuma's quote sorta-kinda-maybe implied it to be, what would you want their backstory to be?
For reference we've had:
Ganon
Unspellable Mage from ALTTP
Ganondorf
Majora
Vatti
General Onyx and the Woman with a strangely-shaped hat?
Zant
Ghirahim
Yuga (if you can call him that)
How do you guys want Zelda's character to be in this game? I really liked Skyward Sword's version.
I'm also quite fond of SS's Zelda, though I wouldn't mind seeing another "Zelda" with a personality similar to Tetra.
This question was asked about 40 pages ago.
Lots of people said Skyward Sword Zelda and then it devolved into one of those "oh so you think women need to be cute and charming do you, mysogynerd?" arguments.
As for your question, I haven't played Skyward Sword yet (I know... It's coming in the mail next week), I find that OoT's Ganondorf is the most fleshed out villain. I would like to see a villain like him, but even more round than he. I'd like to stray away from the old Ganon approach—a big beast to kill (though, we all know it's coming). I find the more relatable villains fascinating
I find that OoT's Ganondorf is the most fleshed out villain.
How? That single cutscene early in game and the final battle aren't exactly ''fleshed out'' in my opinion. Other Zelda games have done a better job at portraying the villain. That being said, I don't think it matters that much, and I sometimes do wish we would return to a more simple story. Just give me a goal and I'm all set to go, I'm going to explore every nook and cranny regardless.
HAHAHA oh. I thought we were talking about villains.
@Octane There are hints in other parts of the game that show Ganondorf's character. List some other Zelda villains that have more full villains. [Maybe I just find him the most interesting]
And I don't know if you've played Xenoblade Chronicles, but there sure is a lot to explore in that game—so many nooks and crannies (or as my prof likes to say it: crooks and nannies). That said, the characters really do amplify a game. I know everyone has their own taste, but if done well, characters can really make a story without detracting it from gameplay.
I don't know, I don't really have a preference for what kind of motivations the villain has, as long as it's interesting, preferably unique. Most of Zelda's villains are power-hungry and want to take over the world (which makes sense for Ganon when he represents the Triforce of Power), and I believe Ganondorf from Wind Waker wanted revenge for Hyrule being drowned from him; revenge is pretty common. Provocatively-dressed Cia just had the hots for Link, which was weird, but more interesting. The villain from TriForce Heroes seems to also be jealous, I think? I gotta play it first. I wouldn't mind a "Bad guy feels victimized from his perspective, thinks he's the good guy" kind of story, though if it's less obvious which side you're fighting for, I sometimes feel that I am less motivated to be forced to fight the villain (unless I get a choice). A similar situation is A Link Between Worlds' Hilda, who just wanted Lorule to be like Hyrule.
Girahim's story was personally interesting; even though he was a pawn, he was doing so as the main villain's weapon in dichotomy with Fi's role as your weapon.
Anyway, if you guys know me by now, you'll know that anything that's different from it's predecessors will stick with me. As for Zelda's design, I would also like different. We haven't had a red-headed Zelda in 25 years. I wouldn't mind her looking more Tomboyish and outdoors-y, so that she looks like she could ride a horse, shoot a bow, and forage for herself in the wilderness alongside Link. They did that in Wind Waker, and she still got to wear her Princess dress :3
@Haiassai: I know, but it's still a pretty simple villain; ''evil guy wants to take over the world''. Ganon in Wind Waker and Twilight Princess had more of a background story, some more plot during the game itself and the final showdown. I don't think those two examples are a lot better than OOT, but I think Ganon is little bit more complex and fleshed out in those games. But it doesn't really matter, it's not as if stories in Zelda are notorious for their plot twists and complex narrative, and I'm fine with that.
