Topic: Switch 2018 is going to be the Dust Collecter

There's absolutely no danger of my Switch gathering dust at all - in terms of 'current' hardware, it's rivalled only by an ageing PC and the most underwhelming console I've ever owned (PS4) ..I'm hoping to build a new PC this year, so I'll probably treat myself to a few games for that when I do, but the Switch already looks set to once again dominate my year in gaming - it's just by far and away my favoured gaming platform at the moment and it'll likely remain that way for years to come! ..much of the Switch's 2018 line-up remains a mystery, but I already have quite a few games that I've got my eye on - and once the blanks get filled in, I'm sure that there'll be more than enough to keep me entertained (and then some!) ..can't wait for the first 'full' Direct of the year just to kick my hype levels up another gear - but I'm, frankly, delighted with how things are shaping up - and we're only just getting started!

It's not been a year but with the eshop purchases, arcade archives and indies im struggling to keep up. The Wii u is also hooked up and I'm still buying games for that system. 3ds has a bigger backlog.

Honestly the only way I could see anyone’s Switch ā€œgather dustā€ is if:

1) Their gaming tastes are outside what the Switch offers, which means perhaps its not the console for you.

2) They play so many hours of gaming a week that perhaps a review of lifestyle is required.

I have bought a selection of titles but have only ā€œfinishedā€ 3-4 titles and plenty untouched. So dust collecting is something unlikely to happen. And honestly if you are playing on another console, the fact its getting some dust doesn’t make it a bad thing.

I haven’t touched my Wii or X360 in ages but have a significant backlog still outstanding.

@TheLZdragon Save for the people who have experienced those games already, and don't feel like double-dipping. As a Wii-U and multiplatform owner, the Switch's line-up, for me personally, is rather barren at the moment, and my personal tastes don't involve platformers anymore, slimming it down even further.

Well the idea of a "game drought" is purely based on your own tastes and opinions. I had a Wii U and I'm willing to double dip on some of these games.

@FX102A There is another possibility. Like me, I'm a Nintendo fan, so naturally I get Nintendo consoles. However, when it comes to Nintendo franchises, I'm not into all of them. I have a select number of franchises that I'm interested in, with others that I'm straight-up not. When it comes to the state of the Switch's library right now, the vast majority of franchises I'm interested in are either represented by Wii U ports (Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe) or are simply absent altogether.

I got a Switch because I know that someday there will be entries to the other franchises I'm interested in. However, right now the system has an unbelievably weak library for my tastes, so it's going to collect dust. I suppose I should be used to this by now, it was the same with the DS, 3DS, and Wii U. The only thing was that with those systems brand new games for the franchises I love had already been announced. So I felt "safe" owning those systems. However much I hated the first year of the DS (one of the worst ever, IMO), I knew Animal Crossing Wild World and Mario Kart DS were coming.

The Switch? The only game that has even been remotely announced that I might be excited for is Pokemon, and that is a big IF after how bad Generation VII has been. I have nothing to concretely look forward to right now and it is quite a blow compared to the DS, 3DS, Wii U, where there was plenty.

@Harmonie I don't have a Switch, but I do have a Wii U. Honestly, I think it's a thing with all modern consoles nowadays; unless you missed the prior generation, you're going to have a bit of a slow period in regard to games for the first year or two. By year 3, things should pick up. Take the PS4 for example. IIRC Year 1 and Year 2 were pretty meh, I think Year 3 was when it started to accumulate its own gems instead of relying on remasters from PS3. In that regard Switch is actually doing much better than PS4, but as a Wii U owner you're just going to have to accept that there will be times where you may not have any interesting games coming for a period of a few months.

Bare in mind Nintendo is notorious for keeping their cards close to their chest. I don't agree with this strategy, but I wouldn't be surprised if they drop a heavy-hitter (either an IP like Animal Crossing, a dormant one, or a new IP like Retro's game probably is) for holiday season and don't announce its existence until E3.

@mowerdude and that's a great position to be in. My backlog is just growing and growing so I gotta stop buying games and finding more time to play

What are some good Switch eshop only games to pickup then I have been looking at a few like Mercenary Kings Reloaded, OwlBoy, Guns, Gore and Cannoli, Rocket League.

@mowerdude rocket league (also available physical). Snipperclips, sonic mania, wonder boy dragons trap, overcooked although you might not like all of these as some are chosen by my kids.

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

1UP_MARIO

@mowerdude I would definitely recomend Mario rabbids kingdom battle as I know you don't have that

With all due respect, why did you buy the thing in the first place? You knew that it wasn’t going to get very many PS4 ports, and I get the vibe that you mainly stick to AAA-style games, so I have to question your logic of buying Switch.

I’ll try to answer your question:

All we know about 2018 is what they’ve shown so far. Apart from Bayonetta 3 and Metroid Prime 4, pretty much everything else announced will be launching in the first half of this year. That includes:

-Yoshi
-Kirby
-Mario Tennis
-Bayonetta 1 and 2
-Dark Souls Remaster
-Project Octopath
-Mega Man 11 (hopefully)
-Wolfenstein II
-Labo
-A slew of great indie titles

Keep in mind that some of last year’s best games weren’t officially unveiled until weeks before launch. Mario and Rabbids was announced at E3, and was released about two months later! We didn’t see much in the way of Mario Odyssey until E3, and it released in late October. Doom was announced in September, and released in, what, November?

Pound for pound, Switch’s lineup is already leaving Wii U in the dust!

To be honest, the Switch actually has a very healthy library of games for such a new console & undoubtedly there will be a slew of new games coming down the line... pretty much every large developer has announced their interest in creating games for the Switch (because money) and it takes time. However, we're just a few weeks into the year and approaching a E3, not exactly a great time for anyone trying to push a "game drought" theory.

It's VERY important to note that the PS4's launch library included many ports and upscaled older releases as well... Angry Birds Star Wars anyone? Skylanders Swap Force? Warframe? It takes time for developers to make games for any new platform and to knock the Switch for moving (and improving) a few games over from the little played Wii-U Library needs to consider whether there is a hint of anti-Nintendo bias in their opinion.

The Switch not only has some great exclusive titles, is getting more, but is now the target of pretty much every studio that's not tied to Sony or Microsoft. Yes it might seem like there is a gap in the year... but that's why Nintendo has E3 and it's Nintendo Directs.

Why do some people wait until the day before their birthday and say "this year sucks, there are no cakes or balloons"?

I can see how the Switch could collect some dust at this point if you already own a WiiU, PS4 and gaming PC and have already played the majority of these titles, don't care about portability and don't like indies or retro gaming.

But you really have to remember that most of us aren't in that boat. Personally, I haven't even bought all the 2017 titles that I want, and am far from completing all the ones I did buy. I could probably survive the next six months without buying a single new game.

Not that I'm going to do that, of course. I already want Dragon Quest Builders and Bayo 1 and 2 as soon as I can buy them, and I might as well get some Wolf II, and Night in the Woods, and hey Fe looks pretty good, and I can't resist Hyrule Warriors Legendary, and oh hell, I'm gonna need to quit my job to find time to play all these games.

How is this thread not locked? It's just a complaint-fest with nothing to add. Further, perhaps you should read just a little more about the upcoming games on the Switch before you brush it off.

Personally, I'd prefer moaners have a place to moan rather than clog up an existing thread with their moaning.

Like JasmineDragon, quieter periods in the release schedule allow me to catch up on previous games I've not bought yet. I haven't spent more than £35 on any Switch game yet, so when a game like Doom or Mario & Rabbids releases at £50 and there's no offer to be had, I wait. Hence I've only just now picked up Skyrim. Next will be Mario & Rabbids, then Doom.

But for those where budget is not much of an issue, I can see why the start to 2018 is possibly underwhelming. I think Nintendo should have released one of the Wii U ports in January, just to keep up momentum, and make more room for new games later on. I know January is usually a low sales month, but they should really try and keep the hype train rolling continuously.
