As much as I love this game, I still have a couple of ways I can play it and was kind of disappointed that it looks like all it got is a new coat of paint. But then when I watched the trailer a second time, it looks like there may be a couple of new things (some kind of list about defense and attacks show up when Peach attacked, that % gauge during battles). If there are some gameplay additions to differentiate it from the original I will definitely get this at some point. Otherwise, just the new look may not be enough for me.
Only thing that excites me about this is the new soundtrack; anything that Shimomura drops is a guaranteed banger. Otherwise I am...slightly underwhelmed
This was a great surprise, even though it was leaked ahead of time. The art style looks fantastic and is super faithful to the original. I think this bodes really well for more Mario RPGs getting remade/ ported in the future. Hopefully they're just starting with this one and we'll get more down the line.

I still have the original Super Mario RPG game for my Super Nes and Retro Duo console. I still play it once in awhile for old times sake. Smithy was and still is a tough boss to deal with even if you knew what you were doing to try to make the boss fight "easier"
I just hope that the Nintendo toned it down for the remake with the Smithy boss fight where it shouldnt be that tough like in the original game.

Mario is adorable. I've never said that for any Mario thing, including Baby Mario, but smol Mario is just really cute in this. Maybe because its so jarring with how Mario has looked in nearly every game the past 15 years, its almost uncanny with how...almost but not quite normal Mario it is. But in a good way.
also I'm gonna be petty and say that its nice for Nintendo to release a Mario RPG that will actually be an RPG instead of some compromised nonsense battle system that half the people hate and the other half merely tolerate :V
I still have my old Super Nintendo game cartridge of Super Mario RPG ever since the late 1990s. still have the old save file for it too.
i just hope that Nintendo will make the remake a little easier to fight certain bosses especially Smithy where it took forever to fight Smithy and him conjuring up the little minions to wear you out etc. Even if you were ready with the right equipment and proper leveling up for stats, Smithy would still kill you even if you got really good at the last form of Smithy etc
So I just remembered something very specific that makes this interesting to me and nearly no one else. So like back in the mid 2000s, one of the first forums I used was for the fansite Super Mario RPG Legacy, a site that has seemingly pretty much entirely vanished from the internet (though a related fansite that hasn't been updated since 2008 is somehow still up...). And the head of that place adored Super Mario RPG (unsurprisingly), and the thing he wanted more than maybe anything else, was a remake of Super Mario RPG. Maybe a sequel as well. He made an online petition for it (yes that joke of an idea was already around back then).
So I'm just curious what he even thinks now that he's finally getting what he always wanted, where ever he's gone off to.

....Wondering if this will add anything new to the game? There was one clip or so where I saw a percentage meter during a battle, what's that about? o.o

Keep it PG-13-ish.
I will say, not every attempt to modernize classic video game music is actually good, even with good instruments covering good melodies (parts of Link's Awakening remake are kinda awkward because of this).
But just from what they played, I love the updated music so much. Super Mario RPG is top tier video game music, some of which sounds different than any other Nintendo game, so this could've not worked. But these songs sound so good so far, updated Nimbus Land was Super Mario Galaxy worthy stuff.
