@MarioLover92 I found the last couple of missing kitten quests to be the most trouble.
The moveset works well enough in a fully open environment, IMO. I don't mind the run button at all.
Interestingly, it's still mostly designed like 3D World, insofar as the islands are linear obstacle courses. There's just a lot of water and space connecting them, and hunting for challenges and shines ala Odyssey.

@1UP_MARIO@Ralizah Yeah, the kitten quests were quite difficult for me too. And yes Ralizah, the islands would not be out of place in 3D World itself! You're pretty much going from point A to point B, after all.

I'm so loving playing SM3DW on the Switch. I didn't buy the game on its original run on the Wii U as at the time all I ever used my Wii for was the Wii Fit U and that was it (stupid me!) I eventually bought SM3DW for the Wii U last year so was very late to the party but never got into playing it much as I preferred the mechanics of the Switch by then.
So I'm seeing this game as a first play though and I am SO enjoying it. I don't think I am particularly good at Mario games but this one I am managing to get all of the green stars and stamps for each level I'm finding the level with the touch items slightly difficult, but I'm playing it on screen with a pro controller so will trying playing it handheld and see if it makes it any easier.
I love Bowser's Fury too, I really enjoy the open world games without a timer where you can explore.
@Sugarkist Yeah I'm loving it too! The increased running speed kinda threw me off at first but I'm getting used to it. The game plays very well with a Pro Controller too, that's how I prefer to play 3D World. I enjoyed Bowser's Fury as well.
I should've tagged you in this thread sooner, would you want to play 3D World online with me sometime? I'd like to try out its online mode.

@Sugarkist Luckily there aren't very many levels that require touch controls. The only ones that come to my mind are Puffprod Peaks (World 2-2), Hands-on Hall (World 6-3), and a couple of Captain Toad levels, so I don't think you'll have to worry too much about them.

don't forget back to hands on hall (world mushroom-5)
@Alfredo18 Yeah sure - if I'm not too busy with class work and stuff we can play together. I sent you a friend request, my Switch username is MarioFan92.

I've beaten the main eight worlds of the game and am trying now to get to World Crown, something I didn't do back on Wii U. And after beating World Star, I still hate Cosmic Cannon Cluster even after eight years. It took me significantly less time to beat it but it was still a ridiculously gimmicky level. I also hate Parabones, they aren't that challenging as enemies, just bloody annoying. Otherwise I like everything that I remember liking about the game before.
The limited camera movement does highlight the lack of proper backgrounds, mostly it's just a still image rendered in 360 degrees. At times some of the levels can feel half-baked, but for the most part it's been great replaying it. Don't know if Bowser's Fury justifies the £50 price tag though, or even my buying it to begin with. Though I like 3D World I'll have to be more... selective in what I buy for Switch, especially because of how many first party games are remasters or ports. Remaking a Mario game'll probably make me less likely to buy it than if Nintendo did it for a Zelda game.
I really don't mean to hate on Mario. I love the series, and it's second to Zelda, for me at least. The thing with 3D Zelda games is that they're rich and deep enough to justify a high price. Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword all (in their HD guises) hold up super well, and are better than most modern day titles, and for me, are full of content, story, and all. Of course I'd rather pay full price for a collection though. With Mario games even putting three of them together makes them feel expensive.
Same applies with Metacritic scores of Odyssey and Breath of the Wild. I feel the latter's score of 97 is far more justified than Odyssey's score of 97, because the latter took many more risks, and had much more content.
I'm nearing the finale of the main game, just starting out on the 8th world, and I'm loving 3D World this time around. If I continue to enjoy this game this much and go on to 100%, it is going to be really hard ranking the best 3D Mario games. I haven't even touched Bowser's Fury yet because of how engrossed I am with the main game. It is very possible that with one well timed release that my least favorite 3D Mario could be in the mix for my favorite.

No problem, its the first time I've ben able to get onto the forum in a while anyway! Yeah of course, I will play online with you, I'm not brilliant at Mario games but we can give it a shot
@TeeJay Tbh I hate it when games give you an extra character, special weapon or whatever only after you 100% as you're not really gonna use that much. I found the 100% completion is the reward for itself.
Just finished Bowser's Fury last night. I think we're definitely looking at the future of 3D Mario here, I could definitely see this expanding on both Odyssey and 3D World and merging the two formulas together into something that's the best of both worlds. Maybe the open world takes the place of the world map in previous linear Mario games? Like instead of running around a top down map with dots to represent the levels and select them from a menu, you just run around an open world and just walk to the level like in Bowser's Fury. Then maybe you collect X amount of Power Stars (or whatever collectible they have) in the levels to open up the castle, and you could have extra ones hidden throughout the world and Toad Houses and all that good stuff. Seems like an easy way to merge both styles.
I found Fury Bowser to be relatively annoying, and I often just waited for him to go away. Irritatingly though, sometimes he didn't leave and I couldn't figure out why. I did like that collecting a Cat Shine hurt him a bit, there's potential for a BotW type of mechanic where you could challenge Bowser immediately but collecting Power Stars makes it easier, but other than that, I would prefer this mechanic not show up again.
I'm also disappointed by the story. I know that story isn't exactly Mario's strength, but it feels like they might've been setting up for something good and they didn't.
There's all of this lore sitting around that they're not taking advantage of. What's the black goop that corrupted Bowser? Why do the cats turn evil when Fury Bowser is active? What are the Giga Bells and what do they have to do with it?
All in all though, good game, definitely filled the gaps on what 3D World was missing. I'll start 3D World proper today and see how good that is, never played it because I didn't have a Wii U and didn't want it because it wasn't doing enough different gameplay wise, this definitely pushed it over the top for me to want to give it a try.
