Just arrived at World 3, so it looks like I have some cool levels to look forward to!

So far I think my favorite level has been the one with all the shadow play in World 2.

Edit: Oh, the circus/casino level in World 1 (the one where you have to step on all of the switches) was really cool too.

@Slowdive Snowball Park and Mount Must Dash are great levels. I like that circus level where you're swinging on poles, too.

Favorite game: Super Mario 3D World

AKA MarioVillager92. Ask if you want to be Switch friends with me, but I want to get to know you first. Thanks! ❤️

Going into this release, 3D World was my least favorite 3D Mario game, but after getting through the first few levels of World 3 I'm having a significantly better experience this time around. I think the biggest improvement in my experience comes just from playing the game now on Switch rather than on the Wii U, being able to capture my experience and play the game in a variety of ways instead of off the Gamepad. This game feels really good on the pro controller.

There are no real expectations I have for 3D World now either like I did when the game was the premier 3D Super Mario game for the Wii U. I know what to expect from the game, and Super Mario Odyssey more than took care of what I would want from a leading 3D Mario experience on the Switch. I'm definitely looking forward to playing through Bowser's Fury, which seems like it's trying to be a marriage of concepts between a game like 3D World and an open design game like Odyssey. From what I've seen, I think I'm going to enjoy that addition.

@Slowdive Mount Must Dash and Chain Link Charge are two which spring to mind. Also love the ghost houses

Does anyone know if there's a way of viewing all the stamps you've collected? Is it possible to see them all together like you see them at the end of the level when you collect a new one?

Suketoudara

Jakeheh-

@Clyde_Radcliffe can you see them when you go in to snapshot mode? I know you can add stamps but I’ve not tried it

@Clyde_Radcliffe In the overworld, you press the minus button and then L to flip to the stamp screen. You can also see how many stars and stamps you got per level in every world this way.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

Oh, thank you! They kept that well hidden! (on the map screen?!)

I'm curious:
Is there anybody here that actually prefers the course clear style of 3D Mario over the sandbox Marios?

Galaxy 1 & 2 are my favourites. They're sort of in the 'course clear' style. Moreso than sandbox really. But they don't feel quite as linear given the design of it.

@Dezzy dont think we will be getting a sequel to a platformer without planned DLC so dont get ya hopes up for odyssey 2.

I'm not sure what relation DLC has to whether there's a sequel?

galaxy 2 was originally DLC to galaxy, it's just there was so much it turned into a one off sequel. i feel like 3d mario games shouldn't have direct sequels.

@Alfredo18 No it wasn't, Ninty weren't even doing DLC in those days. Galaxy 2 was the left over ideas from Galaxy so they made a sequel.

but then again i could be complete bozo brain and not know what the heck is happening at nintendo HQ. i'm not saying it wont happen, and i'd love a sequel to odyssey, it's just that nintendo rarely makes direct sequels to 3D games. sure, there WAS 3d world, but in the collectathon genre, i don't know.

@Alfredo18 I'm not watching random YouTube vids. From the Iwata asks series where he's talking to the game directors with it being clear it was intend as a full game from the start.

Iwata "Well, I'd like to start by asking you how development of Super Mario Galaxy 2 began."

Koizumi "Well, actually, just after we made the first Super Mario Galaxy, Miyamoto-san suggested making another one since we had put so much effort into making an engine that could serve as a good foundation for another game."

@Slowdive While I haven't played the Switch port, the Wii U version is still quite fresh in my mind so I can contribute somewhat. As someone who's decently skilled at platformers, I tend to grow fonder of the harder levels than the early-game ones. Many of my favorite levels are either from the last few worlds, or early levels that feature stunning sections that are executed really well. So, in no particular order:

(may as well stick a spoiler alert here for anyone who wishes not to know about the late-game levels)

  • Broken Blue Bully Belt — really liked the sheer audacity of having such a tight platforming level that's not even the finale of the game, the rising platforms with arrows showing where to go next are a great obstacle in general and the stage is fair while also being difficult.
  • Mystery House Marathon — all the Mystery Boxes were a fun diversion for me as a way to test quick problem solving, this level and its 30 challenges make for a good send-off while also testing patience and consistency. Chaining the ideal run through all the little challenges gives an awesome feeling.
  • Blast Block Skyway — those rhythm blocks are fun in general, amping up the pace so much forces the player to actually be smart about how to traverse the stage and plan ahead. Typing this just now reminds me that this same concept appears in the 8bit rooms of Celeste too, love that game so much...
  • The Great Goal Pole — the titular gimmick is just super fun to me. Nice level to mess around in and one that sticks out in mind for sure.
  • Footlight Lane — not a particularly difficult level, but nonetheless I appreciated the gimmick of the invisible ground. It returns in a few more sectino, but it kind of left me wishing the game did a little more with it.
  • Red-Hot Run — my favorite of the 100s levels for sure, many people here have shown to like the dash panels and I believe they are used to their best in this section.
  • Last but not least, several of the more open areas to break up the monotony, particularly the one in Sunshine Seaside. It's one of the few areas in the game where entering Koopa shells can be used to a good extent, I really really wish there was a level dedicated to shells for the most part but oh well. The shell powerup from NSMB DS will make its great return some day. Oh also the level has Plessie too, Plessie makes everything better.

3D World was pretty much a sequel to 3D Land too. They just didn't call it that.

I reject that tradition as making no sense. If a particular game idea has more space to grow and be experimented with, they should do a sequel. The capture mechanic in Odyssey clearly has so much more they could do with it, so they should.

Both 3D World and Galaxy 2 are good examples of this philosophy working well. I think both of them are better than their predecessor.
