Pretty good overall. I think Bowser's Fury got better the more it progressed.
That said, it still wasn't on the same level as Odyssey or Galaxy, so I hope this was just a 1-off thing they decided to add onto 3D World. I hope it's not a sign of what they're doing next.
Played some more of the main game, now in World Bowser.
Feeling are a bit less mixed now - this game is fantastic. Really captures everything I loved about Mario growing up.
I still wouldn't rank it high as a 3D Mario game - but therein lies the problem - it shouldn't be treated as a 3D Mario game at all. This is a classic 2D Mario through-and-through, just in 3D space - and I think it's done a better job at capturing that than the more recent New Super Mario Bros titles.
I haven’t even started Bowser’s Fury (well, I started it, but only barely), since I want to beat the main game again first. But I’m savoring it, doing a few levels each day. It’s such a good handheld game, I feel bad burning up all the levels at home!

@timleon Completely agree. It’s a 3D Mario for people who prefer the 2D games and it connects them both perfectly. I don’t mind the New series but god do they look dull when compared. Pretty much every level in 3D World is platforming genius.
Wasn't that fast to do the whole thing really. Probably like 5-6 hours to 100% it.
It's fairly small in terms of the assets they had to make, but not so small in terms of time-taken, because they heavily reuse each of the areas.
That's an ok balance on the whole though, because hopefully this didn't detract too much from their next project. It's not so big that I'm no longer expecting Odyssey 2. I'm still expecting Odyssey 2, maybe in 2022.
I'm now playing through 3D World for the first time and so far I'm enjoying the game. The levels are varied and well designed. But at the same time each level is extremely short and I wish there were more collectibles, or least better hidden collectibles (like in Tropical Freeze). I find all three stars and the stamp virtually always on my first run. I definitely prefer the sandbox Marios like Odyssey.
I'm curious:
Is there anybody here that actually prefers the course clear style of 3D Mario over the sandbox Marios?
@dionysos283 I prefer the courses over sandboxes. Odyssey felt shallow a lot of the time where the levels were just empty spaces that had moons dumped in there as opposed to the well crafted set pieces of the Galaxy series and 3D World that gave you sense of reward afterwards.
A happy compromise of the two would be 64 or Sunshine which did sandboxes and courses very well.

Interesting.
Odyssey is actually my favorite 3D Mario. I loved exploring these big open worlds with their diverse objectives. Especially the capture mechanic and the expansive moveset made it exceptionally great in my opinion.
I too prefer 3D World and also felt that Odyssey was "empty" (for wanting of a better word). 3D World also has a lot of funky little details if you look closely enough (and the often neglected touch screen is used to great effect here, though it made more of an impact when playing with others with the player on the Gamepad manipulating the environment via the touch screen, though they have somewhat replicated that via local wireless support).
I think I would have preferred it if Odyssey had been an open world set entirely in New Donk City (with perhaps the odd segue where Mario is transported elsewhere via pipes), with courses situated within buildings or outdoor areas that can be completed at the player's pace much like Breath of the Wild.
And I still hate the fact that wedding didn't actually take place. Bloody false advertising.
I want my Super Mario Couple dammit!
A future game starring Mario and Peach as a married couple would have blown the door open to new possibilities. Now we will never know.
@dionysos283 Cappy and the move sets are unrelated to it being a sandbox game though.
I think Odyssey is a better game than 64 & Sunshine but 64 & Sunshine implemented sandbox design better than Odyssey. There’s less boredom and backtracking in those games which meshed better with the platforming and action nature of Mario games.
It could be they didn't do dlc for it because they're planning a sequel instead, @Alfredo18.... Not betting anything on that but it's certainly possible, so until they say what they plan....

Galaxy 1 & 2 are my favourites. They're sort of in the 'course clear' style. Moreso than sandbox really. But they don't feel quite as linear given the design of it.
My copy arrived today! Starting with 3D World as I never had a Wii U.
Played through the first world (all stamps, green stars, and flagpoles completed so far), and it's been such a charming experience thus far. Cat Mario is the cutest thing ever (love how he trots around on all fours, with his tail up in the air), and I liked the car in the first Bowser fight (looked like something out of an old cartoon).
Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)
I like them both, equally as much, and for different reasons. I love Odyssey, but I love 3D World too. They are both amazing games and I really don’t want to see one at the expense of the other. My preference would be to see both styles and approaches continue. They aren’t mutually exclusive and they provide different experiences.
@Slowdive
The ghost house in World 3, and the Mario Kart speed run level in World 3. Can’t say beyond that because I haven’t progressed beyond World 3, and it’s been so long since I’ve played the game I can’t really remember the levels afterwards.
