@Maxz I do that as well. Too often for my own experience or good, I admit. Whenever that happens, I'll take a break for however long I need and watch funny videos that are sure to make me laugh.

Believe to have read on Inkipedia that one main ability was two subs but it now says as Nicolai is saying. No wonder I felt like a torpedo with my Moto Boots the other day. With them on, I have one main and two sub Swim Speed Up.

@yokokazuo : Thanks. I thought after one main and one sub in the first game, there were diminishing returns so that it did not make sense to have 2 mains, or 1 main and 2 subs. So you've blown my mind...gonna double up on Special Ups tonight and see what results.....

One win away from S and one loss away from cracking and of course my team cracks. Can't seem to get to S in any mode to save my life.

I have bought this game and I am liking it a lot, many thanks to those who told me it was worth it even in single player, it really is. It is a lot of fun!

I used to be a ripple user like you, then I took The Arrow in the knee

Anyone else as livid as I am at the amount of AFk and disconnects there are in Turf War in this game? I'm absolutely fuming! I've lost too many times, only because I've had a player (sometimes even 2 players) doing absolutely nothing.....It really takes the fun out of this game for me.

Equally, I've often been on the winning side where the opposing team had a player down - this isn't fun either! It seems that Turf Wars is broken. Hardly any of the matches are fair because they seem to be decided on by which team is lucky enough not to have a player (or 2) down. Skill seems totally irrelevant!!!

I always report players for inactivity (whether I win or not). I've developed a total Zero tolerance to players being AFK or disconnecting (I've had enough!!). Ranked mode on the other hand doesn't seem to have this problem.

Anyone else as angry as I am about this?

@Enoch72 Yeah, I've said it before and I'll say it again, I really think that the Splatoon series should consider taking the Rocket League approach to disconnections instead (at least for Turf Wars) ..when a player drops out, have AI take their place to keep the teams even (then maybe drop another player in mid-match taking the AI's place) - as you say, mismatches (win or lose) aren't enjoyable & happen way too often - at least in Ranked Matches, being on the wrong end of a disconnection won't affect your ranking, but it still feels like you've just wasted the last 3 or 4 minutes!

Don't get me wrong, I love the game and am enjoying it immensely - but I much prefer Rocket League's solution to disconnections (etc) and ensuring that there's balance in all matches...and I think Splatoon's devs should take note!

Gotta agree with all of the above. When the enemy team is down, it feels hollow to win, and when you're team is down, you just have to accept defeat unless the remaining three are very good. There should definitely be more punishments to discourage that behavior.

Trouble is when someone has real internet issues, punishment sucks when you're trying your darndest to get things going. The first two weeks the game came out my internet was a mess. I've got it resolved, but I was having constant drop-outs and just when I thought I'd got everything going, I'd have another unexpected drop. I got "3-5 minute banned" numerous times. I was part of that problem, but it's not like I wasn't trying to get it working right. Sometimes this internet thing is outside your control. Similarly sometimes when you're binge playing you play TW when you know you might get interrupted and you just have to put it down when life interferes. Not everyone's an angsty high school kid holed up in his room with a "do not disturb, gaming" sign on the door.

That said, I do agree it's frustrating, too, too many matches have disconnects on one side or another in TW (or just a really bad afk player, but in TW that doesn't actually matter much. The last 30-60 seconds are all that really matters in TW if your team comes back with a push when they join in. And wins or losses feel cheap when there's too few squids.

OTOH, I played Salmon run for a ton of time where we'd keep losing with 4 squids. Then I played several in a row with a disconnect and we won with just the three of us. TW is really hard to win without full ink ability. But ranked and salmon can be won 3v4 with appropriate skill. Also, @naviandmii, you don't lose rank points if the dc happens early enough. But if they dc after they've been there for some time you still do, which annoys me. The bigger problem is Switch's WiFi is HORRIBLE if you're not in the same room as the AP. I can access my AP's all the way across the yard with good speed, but my Switch can't even stay connected a few rooms away. I suspect Splatoon 2 suffers more dc's due to Switch's poor WiFi being weaker than WiiU's good WiFi (to be fair to Switch, PS4's is even worse still...)

I'm actually very surprised at how well Splatoon 2 works for me. My internet connection is fairly dodgy, so this was a big worry for me, but I've had very few disconnects.

NaviAndMii

@NEStalgia Oh wow, did not know that rankings are sometimes affected - that makes it even more sucky! :/

Certainly true that the Switch's Wi-Fi could be better - I've had a few disconnects (or 'unable to communicate with other console' messages etc) myself from time to time, which is why I tend not to block/report players...may not be their fault! ..I just feel that the imbalance a disconnect creates should've been identified in testing and a more adequate solution put in place (either AI dropping in, or buffing the remaining players perhaps?) ..it could be argued, I guess, that these things even out - but, like @Enoch72 said, you don't get much enjoyment out of those imbalanced matches, win or lose - and if the game has matches that aren't enjoyable, there's a problem.

On a side note, I've just has a super infuriating run on Rainmaker that I just want to vent about! Nobody needs to read any further - I just have to get this off my chest!!

6 matches lost in a row - and all 6 times we should have won! ..I don't know what more I can do! I take down the opposing team, I create a path all the way to the goal, I spam 'This Way!' - I make it so that all my teammates have to do is pick up the RM and swim up my inky trail and we've won! ..but do they do it? NO!

..6 ..times ..in ..a ..row! **face palm!**

I can only guess that it's because I don't tend to forge a path down the 'obvious' route...but the problem with the obvious route is that it's obvious - and exactly where the other team are going to wait in ambush! **face palm!**

I'm hoping that, if I ever manage to get myself out of this 'Rank B+/- Hell' I'm stuck in, I might actually start to get matched with players with half a brain cell between them! [/rant] **Phew! That feels better already!**

@NaviAndMii Ah, that's a pain. Might be better to focus on grabbing the Rainmaker yourself until you rank up, since many people are way too aggressive when holding it, not working with their teammates at all. I do find players get smarter about the stages as you ascend; most people in the A ranks seem to go for the narrow side path on The Reef, for instance. That's an easy way to win in the lower ranks, but of course it doesn't work so well when the opponents are also perfectly aware of it (people complaining about "broken" Rainmaker maps should keep this in mind). Still seems better than going up the ramps though.

One thing I do still find problematic is the Inkrail on Humpback Pump Track. On the one hand, sometimes people just won't get the hint even if I stand next to it shouting "This Way!". On the other hand, some people will go straight for it after getting the Rainmaker at the start of the match, which is really risky because you have to go backwards quite a bit and thus give the other team a lot of free progress if you die, especially since dying while in the rail puts the Rainmaker at the start of it.

And of course, no sooner do I say this than I get smacked with the worst run of disconnects I've ever had. Been trying to play for the last hour and a half - disconnected in nearly every single game, and lost the few games I managed to stay in. I've been banned twice now, and my freshness is in the pits.

Yes! I managed to achieve rank S in each ranked mode. I'm not satisfied without the + though! Here's a picture, don't mind the weird dutch language...

@NaviAndMii Yeah......I'm close to not bothering with Turf Wars any more because of all the disconnects/AFK's.

Whilst I'm ranting, there's too many wannabe snipers playing in Turf War.........If you're in a team with one of those people, you just know you're gonna loose (coupled with someone else on your team disconnecting, then I get close to throwing my pro-controller through the TV!!!)

@Sir_Anthony Nice! I'm nearly there myself. I should probably just suck it up and use Tri until I do. I perform best with it, but like using other weapons too, you know? I'm just starting to figure out some good Brella strategies.

@bluedogrulez I don't know for sure if it's exactly the same in Splatoon 2, but in Splatoon 1 it depends on the ability. Some have diminishing returns while others don't (or barely do). So in some cases 3 subs might actually be worth 1 main but in most cases 1 main is worth more than 3 subs.
That said, as a rule of thumb I always calculate with 3 subs = 1 main, because even if it's not entirely accurate, the difference is not that big and it's more practical to calculate that way.

Regarding the disconnect problem: Has anyone figured out why DCs happen so seldom in Ranked? How is Nintendo preventing that (as they already did in Splatoon 1)?

Maxz wrote:

Oh man. I did that thing where you play too much and progressively get worse, and then keep playing because you think, "No, no, I'm not a bad player. I need to play another game to prove this to myself". And your play becomes steadily more predictable and wooden, until you're basically a frustrated robot wondering why you keep losing.

That's pretty much (most of) my Splatoon 1 experience in a nutshell.
That stubbornness cost me several rank downs back in the days. And sometimes after a long break, like maybe on the next (few) day(s), I would have straight wins from the start. ^^

Come to think about it, it actually makes sense! I once read that the executive function of your brain can only use/penetrate one certain area for a limited time. If the neurons there fire too long, they become kinda overwrought/numbed and temporarily inaccessible for that reason.
Of course I'm not a neuroscientist, just paraphrasing here. But the example provided in that book was something we all now: When something's on the tip of your tongue.
You're trying so desperately and hard to access that part of your memory that it becomes inaccessible. But when you engage with other things/thoughts for a while, that area 'cools down' and suddenly you remember what was on the tip of your tongue but inaccessible all the time.

Anyway, nowadays I'm a bit more calm and stop playing Ranked (or Splatoon altogether) when I notice that I have a ''bad splat day'' as @Sir_Anthony aptly phrased it. Although the fact that I'm often tired and don't have that much time (compared to when I was playing Splatoon 1) is certainly helping. ^^

On diminishing returns:

Nicolai wrote:

Diminishing returns, as shown by this graph. x is how many main slots have that ability (3 sub abilities equals one main ability), and y is percent towards the maximum benefit. Or you can refer to this:

abilities - percent
1 - - - - - - - 30%
2 - - - - - - - 55%
3 - - - - - - - 75%
4 - - - - - - - 89%
5 - - - - - - - 97%
6 - - - - - - -100%

As you can see, it really stops mattering after the 4th slot, and you're better off using those other two slots toward 55% of another ability.

100% is different for every ability, something arbitrary in the game's code. Whatever the devs thought was best for balance.
