Haha well that's probably because you were 11 or 12.

With age, the horror tones down, and you start to smell the cheese, in all its aged glory.

@Eel first time I played REmake I was barely able to play it on my own and with a guide, being you know, scared and all, so that figures I would have never opened the main door. It's good to know what happens, too, because I don't think I would have even almost 20 years later.

I have a long list of games to play or replay, but God knows I've wanted to revisit RE1 and RE0. Is it an improved experience in the Switch or should I stick to the GC versions?

RE5 & RE6 are a bust on Switch imo, with their 30fps, low-ish resolution when docked and no Gyro Motion aiming Support

Both games offer gyro aiming. And the resolution is 1080p for both as well. As for the 30fps, if that bothers you Switch probably isn't a good platform of choice for you, since most games have to hit 30 to run on a hybrid system (it's especially inconsequential in games like this where movement is so slow).

I couldn't care in the slightest.

The Switch versions of RE5, RE6, RE Rev and RE Rev2 are the only versions with playable gyro. On Steam, setting mouse to Gyro screws it up so that it flickers between keyboard and controller button prompts. Serious pain in the rump.

So ya, I can't tolerate playing them anywhere else. But even if they did have gyro elsewhere, they look so good on Switch and play great, both ok the TV and handheld.

Whether you like the games is a personal assessment, of course.

@OldManHermit
I love the cheese. Honestly, I'm not a fan of horror. The only reason I actually liked RE Revelations is specifically because it wasn't all out demonic horror like some other games. Maybe that's a negative to some, but for me it's why I love the series (and, it's why I hated RE7 in VR, and quit after 30 min and have had no desire to ever play the game again).

It is, because I find RE4 too difficult, and Gyro would have ironed that out. Ah well.

As for Revelations, joycon gyro works either way. It works in handheld, it works with the joycon grip when docked or tabletop, and it works with split joycon docked or tabletop, and, has optional gesture reloading exclusive to split joycon where you physically reload the gun, where the IR sensor detects your hand on the bottom. It's awesome.

@Eel A crimson head scared me real good yesterday. Came out of the west side save room and I heard a faint thumping noise. Thought to myself “another dog?”. Then a crimson head came running down the stairs at me. I instinctively ran away, even though I had the shotgun. Well done game, well done.

@NintendoByNature yeah I pretty much avoid straight horror games, but I really like having elements of horror in my games. Like the toothy piano in Boo’s Mansion in Mario 64. That little extra something that adds an element of unexpectedness and danger.

Resi is such a bizarre series. It’s had at least 3 phases (4 depending on how we catagorize the Revelation games and Remakes) and it manages to reinvent itself into something compelling. I prefer the slow-burn of the originals, but I like the action of 4 and 5 too, and I think VII had some great moments even if the jump scares aren’t really my forte.

How does VIII compare to VII as far as jump scares? Based on the setting it seems like there would be less.

@Losermagnet
I haven't played much of Village, but I did encounter one or two pretty early on.

That said, I hear its toned down a lot from VII. Which is good, because VII was beyond my comfort zone. It might be different playing on handheld (if it were possible) since handheld tends to make horror games more tolerable for me, but ya.

All RE games have them (I'm playing Revelations 2 atm starting a new save, and already I had a zombie jump scare when pushing a shelf through a hallway.). But some are more excessive than others.

@JaxonH Yeah the jumpscares don't bother me so much in the other games. The move to first person really amps up my tension. If I had nitpick VII I'd say it leans too much into set piece driven hide-and-seek horror (like Alien: Isolation or something). But once it let me explore the Baker Mansion I really started enjoying it. Ending sequences were a bit bunk though 😑

Glad to hear VIII has eased it a bit. Love the snowy European village aesthetic.

@Losermagnet totally get it. Different kind of horror from the originals to the newer entries. Unfortunately, I haven't played 7 or 8 yet. And I'm kicking myself for not getting another PS or Xbox

NintendoByNature

Losermagnet

@NintendoByNature think you'll get an xbox or ps4? They might be easier/cheaper to buy once the next gen systems become more commonplace (if that ever happens).

@JaxonH Yeah the cheesiness is absolutely part of the series' charm. I think RE4 struck the perfect balance of horror elements and over the top action. Whereas 5 just feels like Micheal Bay action flick. It's still a darn fun game though.

Even me, a huge fan and veteran of horror games would find RE7 in VR pretty intense.

I started RE with Revelations on 3DS, but I’ve been getting more into the series with Switch.
Recently beat RE1 and I’ve also beaten RE 5, 6 (Leon’s story so far), Revelations 2 and I’m partway through 4.
Won an Xbox One S a couple years back at a work Christmas party so I got the other games on that, 2 and 3 remakes as well as 7. I’ve beaten 2 and three, but still have to get through 7.
And I’ve managed to get a PS5 where I bought 8, Code Veronica and Zero as that was cheaper than the Switch version. But I want to beat 4 and 7 before moving onto 8 and CV.

My cousin has also been into the series since Revelations and he’s beaten all the ones on Switch as well as 2, 3, and 7 when I lent him my Xbox.
Hope I can get through at least most of these remaining games over my Christmas break.

Btw, does anyone think we will get that “leaked” RE3 cloud version from earlier in the year? (It could have also just been a placeholder image though)
I was able to try the RE7 one in Japan a few years back, but it was on a hotel’s wi-fi and had some input lag because of it.

Ya, it’s why I stuck with the Revelations games for years and was reluctant to play the main series, especially after they went back to hardcore horror. I kinda feel like… how Mortal Kombat didn’t bother me as a kid. But now I hate the gore because it’s too realistic. Horror games are fine when they’re cheesy and I’m not super immersed with realism or VR (Switch handheld! Perfect way to play!). But even Fatal Frame turned me off on Wii U. I did since start playing it on Switch, as I find it tolerable in handheld mode, but I probably wouldn’t play it if it was TV only. I’ve also been hesitant about the remakes because I am not really a fan of being chased most of the game. I did buy them but I haven’t bothered playing them yet. I liked Village with gyro aiming, though oddly it was restricted to when standing still.

Just beat Chapter 1 (Claire) in RE Revelations 2. I love this game. I don’t know why some people were saying it wasn’t nearly as good as the first. I think it’s excellent. This is exactly the kind of RE game I like.

@JaxonH Revelations also has touch gestures on Switch, which I love and wish more developers acknowledged the touch screen.

@NintendoByNature ah haha that’s the crimson heads for ya. I remember a time when one actually appeared right in front of me when I entered a hallway and my first instinct was to immediately open the map 😅. After I collected myself, I unpaused the game and did 180 turn to exit the hallway.

RE7 was a bit odd in how it starts as truly scary, and then becomes progressively more and more an action game.

RE8 does a better job in maintaining a better balanced mood throughout the entire game, though it does have its scary parts.

@Losermagnet I actually had a ps4 at launch, and sold it a couple years ago for not playing it. So if i did, I'd probably go Xbox to see some of Microsofts stuff

Ya I noticed that. Swipe on right side to change weapon, swipe on left side to change sub-weapon.

They went all out on the Switch versions of these games. Excellent ports for all 3 modes of play. Regardless of handheld, tabletop or tv, you get normal controls, gyro aiming, touch support, optional gesture reloading (TWO different options for gesture reloading on top of a button press), optional gesture swiping for melee attacks, optional gesture evading…

I love quality Switch ports.

@JaxonH Yeah I really enjoyed Revelations 2. It had some freaky locations, and weird new creature designs. I also liked the relationship between Claire and Moira. And of course, it was awesome to finally get to play as Barry 'Jill sandwich' Burton.

Gosh, Resident Evil Revelations 2 is so good. And it's a banger on Switch. I still can't believe how good this game looks on a 5W handheld

If you want to see a funny graphical quirk though, on the chapter in the dense forest as Barry, you can look up at the treetops and see some funky tree action.

It was so out of place it got engrained on my memory.

Edit: here I found it. Just these ten seconds of this video.

Huh. I think I know what's going on there. It's location is tied to camera movement. Cruis'n Blast used such a technique for the big action set pieces such as the donut rolling across the road. If you completely stop, so does the donut. This is how they manage to ensure it never actually hits you but is always a close call.

Probably not exactly the same thing as this, but it seems like it could be related. Perhaps this is how they get away with 2D sprites for tree tops without having to show 3D perspective.

Of course. Most players will never notice if they just glance up once (or not at all).
