Oh hey, looks like if you don't subscribe to another subscription of Nintendo Online before your current subscription ends, you lose all your cloud saves...neat.

So then what happens...? Saves are still on your own Switch and will be backed up to the cloud again after you decide to get a new subscription. What would you expect to do with a cloud save at the moment that you're not a member? I really don't see what you're on about?

@toiletduck
The main issue is obviously if your Switch breaks and your subscription ended right before it did or while it is broken and is unable to connect to the internet.

In that case all your data is lost.

It's fairly unlikely though.

@19Robb92 I think it is more of an issue if you sub per month instead of per year. If your switch breaks and you have to send it to repairs you might think it is fine to skip a month since you can't use it anyways. Or if it gets stolen and you can't afford to replace it right away.

I wonder how Nintendo's going to implement the free trial. Automatically activate auto-renewal when you get the trial? Require a card or Paypal attached to your account to use the trial?

@Therad
Yeah, exactly. Which is why I think it will be very unlikely, since most will probably subscribe on a per year basis.

@Grumblevolcano I believe someone already explained that here and that the free trial is automatically turned into a monthly subscription. Not sure about that though and I don't have the source.

Free trials automatically starting billing after the trial unless you cancel is a common thing. One would almost say it's universal.

Can I try the Nintendo Switch Online service before I become a member?
One free, seven-day trial per Nintendo Account is available through Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch.

Free trial automatically converts into a 1-month membership for $3.99/month, unless you turn off automatic renewal by the end of the free trial

@HobbitGamer how do you turn off automatic renewal. Is there a setting

Can I turn off automatic renewal for a Nintendo Switch Online membership?

Yes, you can turn off automatic renewal under Your Subscriptions within the Shop Menu in your Nintendo Account settings or under Your Subscriptions in Account Information on Nintendo eShop on your device at any time up to 48 hours before the end of the subscription term.

Nintendo Switch system update version 6.0.0 has been scheduled for September 18th, 2018 (Tuesday) at 5pm Pacific Time. After this system update is released, Nintendo eShop will be under maintenance for a brief period of time. Nintendo eShop will not be accessible during the maintenance window below. We apologize for the inconvenience.
Maintenance Date and Time
September 18th, 2018 (Tuesday)
5pm to 8pm Pacific Time | 8pm to 11pm Eastern Time
After the maintenance is complete, Nintendo Switch Online memberships will be available for purchase. Nintendo Switch owners won’t automatically become members when the service starts, so they will need to purchase an Individual or Family Membership in order to avoid disruption of their online play in compatible games. Memberships can be purchased or redeemed through Nintendo eShop and Nintendo.com once the maintenance completes.

Heck, even the NSO page it's self gives more detailed information then the Direct did.

I've noticed that it's clearly easier to complain than read. I'm glad there's a FAQ and it wasn't all gone over in the direct, actually. I've got no questions or concerns at this point, I just want to get my game on.

While the NSO section of the Direct was a bit disappointing in terms of information given, I'd noticed it briefly showed a few game titles I didn't recognize from the previously released list of 10 games. So I'd gone to the site to check, and found they'd updated it with all the information people had been clamoring for that the direct didn't give.

In retrospect, expecting the Direct to give us all those details was probably foolish.

@ReaderRagfish I don't think that's what people meant by so little info given, rather the expectation there was more to the service like SNES games, the ability to message your friends, party chat, etc.
