It's so weird to see how people are talking about the Switch version of Goldeneye as the only version with online. It feels like no one talking about it understands or remembers that online is an automatic feature for all NSO multiplayer games. Like the Switch version didn't get an extra feature, its just automatically is a feature of the service.

Been playing through Goldeneye. The controls took a bit to get used to but I've had no problem doing what needs to be done...until the train. I've tried a couple of times but can't get anywhere near cutting the vent open in time. I remember having trouble with it on the original, too, but not like this. I just can't aim and hit the braces properly at all. Is there a way to manually crouch? Because that makes it easier, but I just keep randomly crouching and then standing back up at the most inopportune times.

My biggest surprise 4 levels in at least is that being the beloved masterpiece of 007 games and also the only one Rare made, it does honestly feel like the first game in the series of FPS Bond games. I wouldn't say The World is Not Enough is better, but it does feel like a bigger, more advanced now that we know how to make N64 games sequel to Goldeneye. A lot of it because of the levels, which are surprisingly short so far (especially level 3, which is basically one open area). Level 4 was a lot larger technically but getting lost is maybe the only reason it wouldn't be very short on a replay.

Similar to when I played Pilotwings 64 and Jumping Flash last year, I find myself kinda fascinated going back to early 5th gen console games I never grew up on. It's the type of games I feel like I'm playing less to enjoy them and more for historical context, when everyone was trying to figure out "HOW DO 3D GAM WORK?!!!?"

Is there some, like, schedule to when we get more games on the NSO+Expansion Pack Service

Or is it literally just "When Nintendo decides to do it?" I've rarely ever talked to anyone about Nintendo Switch Stuff since getting one a couple years ago, but I'm totally hooked on these classic NES, SNES, N64 and Genesis games šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

Yes.

Though N64 games thus far have been, more or less, one a month. And we do know the next few are gonna be Mario Party 3, the Pokemon Stadium games, 1080 Snowboarding and Excitebike 64 (and possibly Harvest Moon 64 if the Japanese showcase is any indication).

@FunGuy There's been no schedule for NSO game releases. Like KKSlider said, when NES & SNES games first started coming to NSO, they initially may have been monthly additions, then they came out in a slower drip. I think 1-3 months would pass, and Nintendo was silent on the subject. The lack of a schedule has been rather disappointing. In the long term, I don't think that's changed.

@FunGuy In addition to what's already been said, there's generally 3-4 Genesis/Mega Drive games added every 3 months so the next batch of Genesis/Mega Drive games is likely in March. Base NSO though currently has no pattern at all, there hasn't any NES and SNES games since July 2022. Maybe if we're extremely lucky, something like Super Mario RPG appears in the Direct given the February 2022 Direct had Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings.

@Grumblevolcano It seems since the Switch's successor is a year or two away given that Nintendo hasn't even told us the project name let-alone any tangible information regarding the next-gen console, that now would be a great time to add GB/GBC/GBA games to the NSO library. With the limited on-board memory of the Switch and how every game in the library is part of the emulation apps, Gamecube and Dreamcast games seem highly unlikely to be added, though Saturn, NEOGEO, and PCE games can't be completely discounted as possible yet. As for the current and future retro games available on NSO?

I'm pretty sure NSO will be a platform moving forward and all of the retro games on Switch will also be available on the Switch successor. We'll probably even get games on the consoles available on Switch long after the Switch is set-out to pasture as cross-gen releases.

Nintendo announced a selection of games, possibly by choosing them out of a hat randomly.

They got someone to say actual things about Kuru Kururin and Gargoyle's Quest in 2023 in a Nintendo Direct so I am very happy and amused by that.

When/if they do the Pokemon games on it people are going to go nuts. Pretty happy they finally added GB(C), lots of nostalgia for these titles

Unless the pokemon company gets to sell them separately and with backup restrictions, I wouldn’t hold my breath

@Eel
Fair call and I'm not holding my breath for it, which is why I said when/if not when. I also don't really care given I already have pretty much all of them on original hardware. But given Goldeneye happened I don't think it's entirely out of the question. And it would certainly change the value equation for NSO for a LOT of people I think, more than Goldeneye even

edit: I also distinctly remember some people on here saying GB on NSO would never happen because it would stop people from buying remasters of GB titles like Link's Awakening HD. Then they go and make Link's Awakening DX one of the launch titles for it. Presumably those same people are now going to argue that the existence of the Diamond/Pearl and the Lets Go games are reasons why they'll never do Pokemon. Right up until they release Pokemon and they pretend they never said it

It’s certainly a strange selection of games to launch on GB/GBA. Like they got the second and third Mario Land games but not the first? But they do have Tetris. Also I’m really surprised they included Link’s Awakening DX when there’s a full price remake on the Switch.

Honestly I doubt anyone is going to play Link's Awakening DX over the remake in 2023 - we're talking a 25-year-old rerelease of a 30-year-old game here. Those who do play it are probably only choosing to play the GBC version for nostalgia reasons, or otherwise wouldn't have shelled out $60 on the remake anyway.

If anything, I could see someone people trying out the GBC version, seeing how much it's aged, and subsequently buying the Switch remake.

At least 2'8".

Fizza

@Buizel I'm in another category personally: someone who bought and adored the remake back in April 2021 that is now immensely curious to try out the original to see how things have changed. Should be a good little time-killer over the next few months in-between other releases AND it'll also contribute to my goal of playing every 2D Zelda game at some point 😁

I think the title I'm most excited for out of the launch batch of GB/GBC games is probably a toss-up between Tetris and Kirby's Dream Land honestly: loved later versions of both yet have never been able to play the originals until now so I'm very excited!

I think it's time we re-assess the value of Switch Online.

As it stands, in 2023, here are the benefits and price for each tier:

Switch Online

  • $20 per year (single)
  • $4.38 per year (family plan of 8)
  • NES games
  • SNES games
  • GB/GBC games
  • Cloud Save Backups
  • Online Access
  • Eligible for Voucher Program

Switch Online + Expansion Pass

  • $50 per year (single)
  • $10 per year (family plan of 8)
  • NES games
  • SNES games
  • N64 games
  • Genesis games
  • GB/GBC games
  • GBA games
  • Cloud Save Backups
  • Online Access
  • Eligible for Voucher Program
  • Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion
  • Animal Crossing Expansion
  • Mario Kart 8 Booster Course Expansion

Now. Is the service "worth it" in February 2023? I think that depends on A) whether you value Nintendo's back catalog of games, and B) whether or not you're subscribing via family plan.

Right off the bat, family plans are incredibly high value. There's no reason not to be subscribed to, at the very least, basic online service. For less than $5 per YEAR, just getting cloud backups alone makes it worthwhile. Everything else is a bonus. And honestly, if you're gonna pay $5 for the basic, there's no reason to not just pay $10/yr for the full package. That's so incredibly cheap. Unless you have no desire to play any Genesis, N64 or GBA games, or the 3 expansions, there's no reason not to subscribe via family plan.

As for the solo memberships, it's not so clean cut. I think for $20/yr, what you're getting now is worth it. The cloud saves are clutch, and getting NES, SNES and GB with online access on top of it... ya. That's worth $20 imo. Even if you never play anything online, never play retro games and have no worry of losing save data... it's still worth it for the vouchers alone. One voucher set pays for that year's service. So I can 100% confidently recommend the basic service even at full $20 solo membership price.

As for Expansion Pass solo, that really depends on how much value you place on the added Genesis, N64, GBA and 3 game expansions. This is the one where I can't wholly recommend to everyone. It really comes down to whether you personally like having a full spread of back catalog spanning NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, GB/GBC and GBA. If you do, I think you'll get your money's worth. If you don't, I think it's better to just skip it.

But there's no reason for anyone to ever pay full solo membership price when the family plans exist. I'm in a group with ppl all over the world. Nintendo doesn't care. It's so easy to find a group here on the forums. I cannot stress how nice it is getting all the perks of the full Expansion pass for $10/yr. I feels like highway robbery.

GameOtaku

Still needs an option to purchase individual games without a subscription. What does Nintendo or the owners of these games stand to lose by offering them for sale? They are going to make money one way or the other. Even if I could find the amount of people to do a sub I’m still going to lose access to the games I got the service for due to the check in.

1UP_MARIO

@GameOtaku just buy a Wii U or 3ds and buy these games all over again.
