Hi all,
I keep wondering if I should get Nintendo switch online but every time a free 7 day sub comes up I struggle to find any games I'm interested in that are still popular.

looking for games to play with just randoms as don't have any friends with a switch.

I've played Tetris, Pacman, rocket League and Fortnite but not really anything interesting me.

I tried finding matches in diablo, borderlands and doom but couldn't find any. I haven't played any of them a lot to get high levels wheee everyone else probably plays.

the closest game I can see that interests me is Splatoon but with 3 on the horizon it feels like an expensive endeavour for a short time. I know MK and smash are super popular but already had my fill of those last gen.

Guessing there's no online count of players anywhere like Steam? Beyond those I mentioned what are the really popular online games?

Pokemon Sword and Shield is very active. You can easily find opponents for battling aswell as allies for raiding.
Pokken Tournament is fairly active, it's probably the most active fighting game on Switch apart from Smash.
Pokemon Unite is super active and will soon have cross play with mobile phones.
Monster Hunter Rise is very active aswell as Monster Hunter Stories 2.
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate has a decent playerbase for endgame content
You will probably not have issues finding players in Mario Tennis Aces and Mario Golf Super Rush aswell.

Just a reminder, you can play all of the F2P games without an NSO subscription.

@CalhounDO Someone new here commonly asks "should I wait for the next _______" coming out in 6-12 months.

Splatoon 3 likely releases mid July 2022, almost a year away (if covid doesn't delay it). Splatoon 2 is still active here in the US (I don't know about the UK, there). And the single player is quite good. Octo Expansion DLC is basically a second single player game, which was also great. I loved Splatoon 2 and I wish I could buy Splatoon 1 for the Switch, but it's Wii U exclusive. So, I would still recommend Splatoon 2.

My most played onilne games are:
Rocket League
Splatoon 2
Mario Kart 8
Crash Team Racing (great game with good single player/story campaign, but online has dwindled, and 50 second load screens can be tiresome. In the US here, I currently only race 2-3 other players, rather than the full 8 players)

If the "last gen" Mario Kart you played was Wii, I think Mario Kart 8 is worth it. If you played Mario Kart 8 on Wii U, though, then that's understandable.

I mostly play 51 Worldwide Games online. There's usually someone else willing to play. Mario Maker 2 has lots of people playing frequently.

Your first anything is important; a memory you don't want to forget. That's what makes nostalgia such a fascinating concept. That's why many people enjoy games that have aged well.

Splatoon 2 is still a great game with plenty of active players. It does dip down to $40US or even lower from time to time and I don't think you would be disappointed.
