From most of the comments I'm reading here, it appears that Legends Arceus is for the Pokemon fans that didn't like battling or collecting badges and raising monsters to become a champion. As someone big into the competitive scene, this game is nothing more than a pokeball throwing simulator.
My criticism is that this misunderstands entirely what kind of game this is. This is not a traditional turn based RPG, this is not the focus of the game. The game leans far more into Action RPG because it quite literally is a game that could not be even theoretically simulated with paper and dice. Its core mechanic, which you dismiss entirely as it being a "Pokeball throwing simulator", are based on real time player actions
Traditional RPG -> Variations on the mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons
Tactics RPG -> Variations on tactics board games, position matters
Action RPG -> Removes itself from the strict structure of a non-video game, actions in real time
MMO -> Action RPG but replacing most or all of the NPCs with other players
Rougelike -> Procedurally generated worlds
All of the main series games fit very neatly into the definition of a traditional RPG. Legends does not. IF you are unable to see that you are either trolling or are being wilfully ignorant. Either way, I don't value your criticisms of the game given they essentially amount to "I don't like action RPGs" and not "this is what Legends Arceus doesn't do right as an action RPG"

@skywake I have always needed to say this to you. How are you able to break down stuff so well? whenever I see you reply to someone you can breakdown a series to its core, good job.

I guess technically part of my previous job's description was explaining maths and logic concepts to tradies. So that probably helps. But I'm fairly sure I developed that skill well before then. Probably a combination of heavy consumption of science/tech/gaming media since the early 2000s and arguing with people who are wrong on the internet.
Also having both the intellectual honesty to be able to accept when you're wrong and the self confidence/pig-headedness to not back down when you know you're not. Nobody is too dumb to reason with, I never go into a discussion thinking the other person is an idiot. And there are right and wrong answers, not everything is a point of view. It's just that sometimes people are either too stubborn or lack the information to be able to accept they are wrong
Now that ive been playing the game more and more it is pretty freakin awesome. I know its still early in 2022 but I think it could be a game of the year canidate.

Ok this is something that needs to be talked about.
This is the first pokemon game, that doesn't make me want to throw on a bunch of max repel's and avoid any and every pokemon, I actually want to see as many as I can, I actually want to catch them, even the ones I got already, TBH, whenever I go into a cave, I have a callback to me just running through it, and having to get into a battle, get out again.
In here, you can fight whatever pokemon you want, when you want!
idk if this is just me tho.

@Snatcher
Definitely not just you. I think it's partly the visibility of the Pokemon in the overworld but also the fact that you choose whether you want to engage with them or not. Which means you choose can run past the Starly/Tentacool/Geodude/Zubat and instead engage with something else. Rather than getting bombarded by 20 Zubats in a row
But also the main progression of the game is tied to Pokedex completion rather than beating Gym leaders. And Pokedex completion includes battling against a Pokemon or catching more of that Pokemon. So not only are you rewarded for doing stuff like catching 10 Bidoof it also is kinda adds up to this games equivalent of beating a Gym leader. Literally the first game in the series where the research goals as set out by the professor of the game are required for game progression

This, I can catch ten different Bidoof, but still get rewarded, I don't have to run into all those stupid geodude, over, and over, and over again! There is no stupid "You couldn't get away" prompted wasting your time whenever you want to run away, because you are running away, I don't just run into a pokemon, and this pokemon battle starts automatically, I know thats kinda the whole thing, but it gets boring after a wile, "Oh no I ran into a pokemon, music starts, gotta select run away, oh no you couldn't get away, gotta wait for its turn to end"
and ok maybe i'm nitpicking a little bit, but I didn't always remember to bring max repels, and with sword and shield, a random pokemon just pops out of the grass, and there is nothing I can do about it.
I just, really love it like this, and its kind funny to, if your trying to catch a pokemon, and get caught, you will actually run away, to reset.
I just love it so much, sorry for this long winded comment. (And yes, maybe the world is a little empty, but I feel like they needed to do that, so pokemon wasn't just 1v5ing you.)

Ok so I just found this out, but sudowoodo, will not attack you, it just sits there like a tree, just like its pokedex entry says! just thought I would throw that out there.

Man that third Noble. It technically did what I asked in increasing the mechanical complexity, but they also did what I said in not doing by doing it in the wrong way. Genuinely have no idea how to beat this, I get it all the way down, then it traps me in the corner with a fire tornado I can't get through and then kills me with the unlockable attack to follow up. Happened three times. No clue what I'm supposed to do here. I can't reach the balms to stop the unblockable attack because of the fire wall.
@Pizzamorg OMG, that was the first time I died, just because of that, but don't worry.
When it starts charging, move to the farthest left, or the farthest right on the platform, when it looks like its locked its charge, which it should make a spark or something, move the other way, or you could just I frame it, but thats much harder.
NGL this part got me, I had no idea what to do.

Thank you! I got it on the fifth go, almost died again but somehow just clinched it. Boy.
I am guessing the next one is going to be really hard. Oh no.
@Pizzamorg@Snatcher same that killed me twice. First time it ever happened. Third try went much better though, I got used to the reduced space and got pretty used to the attack pattern by then.
He only used the big attack once that time too, and I did manage to stop it in time to send a Pokémon.
@Varkster “trade” evolutions are done with an in-game item now. I think you’ll know which is it when you see it.
