What do you guys think of the game?
I've never played a Paper Mario before, but I heard that Color Splash und Sticker Star didn't go well with fans.
So do you think this one will be better?
I'm wondering if playing TTYD for the first time immediately before this game will only highlight the difference in quality between the two, or if it'll sate whatever hunger I have for a Mario RPG for a while and allow me to enjoy this, ah, "adventure game" for what it is.
No evidence of a combat system built around consumable items/resources, which was a massive irritation in Sticker Star.
Literally everyone other than Mario isn't a toad. That's a massive improvement right there.
Footage suggests large areas to explore, and maybe even overworld navigation via boat (the sailing recalled memories of The Wind Waker for me)
Really enjoying the creepy vibe of the origami army, which seems to want to assimilate the world of Paper Mario.
Some evidence of partners in combat.
Presentation seems far more cinematic than the last few games. Now, this could just be one or two cutscenes that they've made to look representative of the larger thrust of the story, but it certainly looks more involved and intense than recent PM games.
I don't realistically see how it's not going to be an improvement all-around.
@link3710 Surprised to hear you're so negative about that since most players agree it's better then Dream Team at least.
Lol I'm sorry, what? Pretty sure it's the other way around: Dream Team is better than Paper Jam. Dream Team is a solid entry in the M&L series while Paper Jam is a... good game with a lot of lost potential.
God first.

Just gonna say, I kinda like the horror twist that this game has taken on. The beginning of the trailer is eerie and I don't like that Peach is represented as bad but it makes me strangely intrigued.
There is a strong history of fake Peaches in the Mario series, so that being a fake Peach seems likely. I'm holding out hope that she'll be playable like in the classic games, but I guess we'll see when it launches.
@Snaplocket I'll be honest, I've never heard anyone rank Paper Jam over Dream Team before you. Occasionally over Partners in Time, but not Dream Team.
@Snaplocket Uh... No idea what that's about. But anyways, this isn't the main series. This is Paper Mario, and 3/5 games have had Peach in a major role.
It kinda just says something that people have to look super hard to see if this RPG will actually have normal attacks that aren't consumable and party members that aren't exactly the same appearance-wise as a normal enemy. Both in terms of the direction of this series and the early marketing for this game.
For any disappointment I have, I don't think anything made me as mad about the direction of this series than when Nintendo kept pretending this RPG series that still uses turn based RPG battles like every other Mario RPG wasn't an RPG. As someone who agrees with Nintendo that Metroid Prime (well mainly the first 2 games) isn't a first person shooter, this is way too much of a stretch, if not an outright lie to excuse poor game design decisions.
Things like this go beyond me just being disappointed, and are more just stupid decisions that no one actually likes. Like even if you adore the new Paper Mario games, you can't tell me "yes this is an action adventure game and it would be worse with more named characters with unique appearances".
I was pleasantly surprised with this news drop yesterday. I'm relatively new to the series, but I have enjoyed the two games I've played. I'm cautiously optimistic about this title, but I need to see more first.
I found Super Paper Mario to be really enjoyable. The platforming elements seemed a bit odd at times, but the worlds, writing, humor, and music of this title made up for any awkwardness IMO. Who knew that Peach would have to deal with a dating sim setup? XD
I really don't get the hate for Color Splash though. Sure, it's a flawed game, the battle system being my main problem as that's the first time I've had an incentive to flee from combat to conserve resources. But there were some genuinely funny moments, the levels were fun to explore to find each and every paint spot, and I really do like the self-aware "Hey, we're paper!" humor. Things were a pretty fun, albeit OP mechanic as well.
Currently playing: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch)
1. Paper Mario Color Splash
1. Paper Mario TTYD
3. Super Paper Mario
4. Paper Mario
5. Paper Mario Sticker Star (right at the bottom)
I feel that the writing and aethestic of Color Splash was absolutely fantastic. I also liked the combat system but preferred TTYD's. The only things I didn't like in Color Splash were the Roshambo Temples and the Shy Bandit.
Would've been nice for it to have had a second life on the Switch like many other underrated Wii U games like Tropical Freeze, TMS and Wonderful 101 had the chance though the existence of Origami King suggests this won't happen.
The trailer left me "cautiously optimistic" like a bunch of other people. I'm intrigued by the story shown so far. The deleted chinese clip hints at temporary partners alongside Olivia.
Unless they bring back move cards and the Color Splash map system, I'll be pretty happy.
