I skipped the Roshambo Temples. As for the Shy Bandit, I also found him to be a major annoyance. That took second saddle to my complaints about the combat system though.

That's not to say I didn't like the game. But if the combat system had been set up very differently and if something trying to undo your progress wasn't a thing, I would've enjoyed it a lot more.

I am SUPER hyped for this game. It has that same grand, epic scale of older entries. In fact, far more epic and grand than any game in the series. That trailer was incredible.

The story premise seems intriguing and more serious (relatively, it’s still a Paper Mario game after all), the characters are oozing charm and personality (already love Bob-omb, he emotes his mellow, chill attitude so well), the audience from Thousand Year Door is back (yay!) traditional non-resource-based attacks make a return (no more stickers or cards), and frankly, the game just looks downright amazing.

I hope the partners join in battle (seems they might), but even if they don’t, just based off face value alone this looks to be the best Paper Mario game in a decade.

Love the weighty feel of Mario stomping on enemy heads, and the sound of the coin you get.. Pop-clink! Pop-clink! Pop-clink! Nintendo is so good at making games with a focus on celebratory audio-visual feedback.

@JaxonH next to trials of mana, this is my most hyped game so far in 2020. So much so that I've already started stock piling paper Mario and mario+Luigi titles. Earlier today i bought dream team. I assume it's more or less its similar game play. Next is super paper Mario unless i find color splash on the cheap.

@NintendoByNature I highly recommend Super Paper Mario; I picked it up used from GameStop and played it over the holidays in 2018. It does a few things differently from the first two titles (from what I've read), particularly with the platforming elements, but the story, characters, and music are pretty decent.

Color Splash is fairly decent and worth playing for the writing at least, but I wouldn't get it at full price. As mentioned previously, there are a few flaws to the game.

I can't speak for the other titles. TTYD is out of my reach right now, I'm avoiding Sticker Star, and I'd like to pick up the original game on the Wii U VC in the future.

Ha! Me too. At least, I started playing Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario on the Win 2 handheld. May even throw Color Splash in at some point.

Mario & Luigi titles have a different flavor. Still good but... different. I liked Dream Team. I own the rest (Paper Jam, Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story) but havent played them.

I have yet to play a Mario & Luigi title. I own both the Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story remakes on the 3DS but have yet to dive into either of them. I also want to try Partners In Time. Not sure if I should bother with Dream Team or Paper Jam though.

@Tyranexx yea I heard good things about super. Color splash looks beautiful and it's kind of confirmed its not coming to switch( which i was holding out for), so I figured i might as well give it a spin since I'm really enjoying the original atm..

I can get TTYD but cheapest ive seen is $60. And I'm not really willing to spend that much. Who knows, my mind may change lol

@NintendoByNature At this point I'm just excited for the return of a constant stream of Switch games releasing starting next week and this game (release date and announcement) is evidence that Nintendo isn't just relying on updates/DLC for the big 3 (Animal Crossing, Smash, Pokemon) for the summer.

@JaxonH yea i have super star saga too but havent touched it yet. Some of those others are on my wish list, but I probabaly have enough to keep me busy since xenoblade is coming soon. If I play my cards right, I should be able to finish paper mario, ff9, xenoblade, and toss in one more random game ( Mario and Luigi title or another paper Mario) before origami drops.

NintendoByNature

NintendoByNature

@Grumblevolcano that's a good point. We could easily get a couple more drops that are "out in 2 months" like this one. I'd much rather have those kinds of announcements.

But yea, knowing we have may locked down, June (51 clubhouse plus some 3rd party games), and July. I think that's good enough for now. Just hope we get a couple surprises for August and September.

I’m enjoying Wonderful 101 until Xenoblade, Borderlands Legendary, Bioshock Collection and XCOM 2. But those games alone will last til Paper Mario. Add Club House, Trails of Cold Steel III, Burnout Paradise, Outer Worlds, another crack at Catherine and it seems the backlog will continue to grow.

Can always use Dolphin for Thousand Year Door. I mean, as long as you plan on buying when a good price comes around. I have a nice Gamecube and Wii collection but I never use them. Always on Dolphin. Or heck, even a modded vWii on your Wii U. Super easy to do since it’s only the Wii OS not the Wii U OS, and it can play GC natively. Personally I’d still choose Dolphin because it’s easier, games can run crisp HD and you can use any controller, with save states. But Wii U is good for Wii games that need motion, like Metroid Prime 3 and Skyward Sword. I don’t mess with those on Dolphin because the motion doesn’t map well to an analog or the analog is already being used. Super Paper Mario maps well though, even despite sideways Wiimote pointing at the screen sometimes with the occasional shake. All that can be done with buttons and analog.

Yeah, I'm pretty excited for TOK as well, seeing as it has a lot of potential to be one of the best games in the Paper Mario series. I keep on watching its reveal trailer to suck up as much info as I can and enjoy the music that plays on the title card. Speaking of, that song is one of the best pieces of music I've heard in a long while. If that is the game's title theme, then I probably won't press Start to play for a long time haha. It's sad that it gets cut off so soon for that Metroid tease.

I just revisited TTYD yesterday, and man. That game truly is a gem. I play the game on Dolphin, and it was actually the 4K visuals that pulled me in at first. I stayed for literally everything else, though - story, OST, charm, witty writing (but not even necessarily for "uniquely designed characters" that we tend to see in Paper Mario fandom discussions). I really couldn't recommend the game enough, so for all who are on the fence or playing the game right now... try to play as much as you can before TOK's release.

Super Paper Mario is a very close second to TTYD for me, too. Sure, it's not a traditional RPG at all, but it did what it set out to do perfectly. Literally my only complaint about the game is how the game looked sometimes: the game makes heavy use of lines, quadrilaterals, and sharp edges and... well, sometimes everything just looked out of place. I'll appreciate it's consistency with the art style, though; otherwise, I truly think SPM is a masterpiece as well, up there with TTYD. I think it even has a better story than TTYD, too. Of course, SPM's OST is also great, and the charm is overflowing (the entirety of Chapter 2 is a personal favorite of mine), and it deals with "mature" issues in one of the best ways only a video game can. Don't diss SPM because it's not an RPG like the first two games... I highly recommend giving it a try if you're on the fence.

I played the first Paper Mario game when I was younger... and it didn't really stick with me. I'll probably give it another go later, but I thought the pacing in that game was... not good. And the story is arguably not as engaging as the next two games, although I might think otherwise if I give the game another shot. I did multiple times back in the day, but it always failed to stick with me. Maybe now that I know what to expect after playing TTYD, I can better appreciate what the game was going for. I also never really played much of SS, and I don't have CS, so I can't really say much about those games. I have watched a lot of CS gameplay on YouTube though, and with the stunning paper-based visuals, great OST and quite clever writing... it's really a game I should play on my own. For some reason I haven't gotten around to playing it yet.

So my personal ranking would be TTYD > SPM >>>> PM > SS. Hopefully when I get to play TOK, I'll place it in my top 3 PM games ranking when all is said and done.

@Tyrannexx @JaxonH Unlike the PM games, I have played all M&L games (Mario and Luigi is such a fantastic series, really), and out of them I'd recommend BiS the most. That game might very well be my favorite RPG of all time; the OST, the story, the highly addictive gameplay... almost everything is flawless to me. The side character's (to avoid spoilers) personality is my only complaint, but that's clearly more of a pet peeve than an actual complaint. The other games are excellent games too (although Paper Jam is a hit or miss game depending on who you speak to. I think it's a good game, but not everyone else thinks the same) and tend to be self-contained, so you don't have to play the games in order to enjoy them. If you do choose to get into the M&L series though, I'd easily recommend BiS first as I think it's the pinnacle of the series. Dream Team's also pretty good too if you're looking for a more recent entry to play (on the 3DS).

God first.

To all y'all saying you haven't played Bowser's Inside Story and have a copy... Play it. It's one of the all time JRPG greats IMO. Utterly bizarre but oozing charm, a wonderful battle system, crazy locations, and has great characters. Superstar Saga is highly recommended too, as are Thousand Year Door and Super Paper Mario.

@JaxonH I've never tried to do any modding really, and wouldn't know where to start. I typically like playing on original hardware, but I would be open to trying it, if it's easy enough to figure out.

By official means, 3DS and Wii U has the entire Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi franchises before Origami King except TTYD.

It's the case with other franchises too (e.g. Mario platformers, Fire Emblem) where outside of Switch games, the GC game is the only one missing if you have 3DS and Wii U. It really shows 2 things:

1. Nintendo's ignorance of the GC library
2. Just how well 3DS and Wii U handled the other systems

You all are making me rethink ignoring Paper Jam. XD The only reason I've even skipped Dream Team up to this point (though haven't ruled it out) is the length on HLTB.

@NintendoByNature TTYD would depend on if I could find it for cheap lol. Then I'd have to find a means to actually play it. That's why I'm sort of hoping it gets the Switch port treatment at some point. But as noted above, Nintendo hasn't paid a lot of attention to the GCN library recently. The only exceptions I can think of are The Wind Waker HD and the Luigi's Mansion 3DS port.

@veeflames Weird, I didn't get the notification to your response to me. No matter.

It's nice to know the M&L games are self-contained! I was planning on starting with Superstar Saga and skipping straight to BIS as I thought they were related in some way. Partially because I found Peach's "mouth garbage" in a trailer I watched so humorous.

@Tyranexx yep its a 40hr long experience and surprisingly, I'm becoming more open to games of that length. As where before i used to shy away from them. But considering switch hasn't gotten a ton this year, I'm willing to try some new stuff out(ff7 and ff9 are the most current examples). So I'll chip away at dream team soon. Fyi it's platinum coin redeemable for 30% off right now and that's why i grabbed it. $14 is worth the flyer.

Yea for TTYD it'll prob be last on my list because of price. I can get almost all the other Mario + Luigi and paper Mario games for $35 or Under. I did see 3rd party seller on Wal-Mart.com selling color splash for 37 and I might take the flyer on it. Haven't decided yet.

The announcement of The Origami King made me purchase the original Paper Mario on the Wii U and once that is completed, I need to pull out the Wii to play through Thousand Year door again and this time actually beat the final boss.

One more hit......10-15 years later I’m still somewhat annoyed at that.
