So word of a new Pac-Man film had just dropped and of course it's live action. This isn't on the same level of absurdity as the Tetris movie that's supposedly being made but I have a very hard time imagining a good adaptation of Pac-Man that isn't animated.

Pac-Land and Pac-Man World seem like the most logical choices for inspiration considering how both have fleshed out the settings and characters. However, apparently it will be "based on an original idea from Chuck Williams of Lightbeam Entertainment", which doesn't instill a lot confidence in me.

On a side note, I wonder if the success of the Sonic movies and the hype for the upcoming Mario movie had influenced Bandai Namco to make a film centered around their own mascot. The best I can hope for is that this film will do well enough to have the side effect of revitalizing interest in Pac-Man as I feel Bandai Namco hasn't been utilizing a lot of their classic franchises in recent times.

As reported by Nintendo Life earlier today, Bandai Namco has shared the opening for Re-Pac. The original is superior, in my opinion, but this is still a pretty good rendition of it.

The main difference is that the original had the bosses kidnap every member of Pac-Man's family except Ms. Pac-Man, who gets taken by the Ghost Gang. In here, the ghosts kidnap everyone, which is a good way to give them more screen time.

It's a little on the slow side.

It does explain why he's a bit less reactive, the ghosts didn't completely destroy his house this time.... So as far as he's aware, maybe his family is hiding somewhere.

I still prefer this PacMan design in my opinion.

The announcement of this game was a really pleasant surprise, and it's about time too. With Crash and Spyro having been back for a while now, it only seems fitting that Pac-Man would eventually return to his 3D roots.

I only have faint memories of playing the first game, and only long after its release on PS1. What little I remember is good, such as the boss battles and King Galaxian in particular. I mainly enjoyed playing 2 on GameCube, which is personally ironic because as a kid I got stuck in the final world and never beat the game, but the game has a fantastic, little soundtrack. Hopefully that one will get remastered down the road.

@Eel Yeah, it seems like they set out to tone it down a bit by cutting the slapstick violence and Pac-Man's mental breakdown. The beer goggles bit was funny but using a barrel to capture Pooka and the baby felt unimaginative, although I guess it was kinda amusing seeing the ghosts rolling them off the screen.

@Anti-Matter I think Pac-Man's design in Pac-Man Party isn't actually all that bad but I personally find the GA design to be unappealing.

Untitled Untitled

At a first glance, they seem pretty similar but the GA design adds minor features like detailed fingers and teeth which just rub me the wrong way.

The Ghostly Adventures designs were definitely based on the designs made for Pac-Man Party, and the designs on that game were good. But yeah, they kind of overdid it in GA.

Pac-Man's official Youtube channel just dropped another graphics comparison video. This time, it's showing off changes for Areas 3 & 4.

Also, here's the Area 1 & 2 graphics comparison video since I forgot to share that one in this thread.

Edit: The channel has shared the final graphics comparison video for Areas 5 & 6. Looks pretty good.

Late and long reply, go!

I'm not a fan of how the Pac-family's Re-Pac'd house looks. Not expecting it to look like the original design, Pac Man 2 new adventures design or for it to be a normal home but it's round shape, the legs supporting it and it's small size makes it look heck-a impractical. Heh, the Ghosts isn't very smart, they think all of em are Pac-man. That's cute, it's good that Blinky showed initiative being the main guy, though. Noticing the poster and the trailers, Toc-Man's wings are always open. I thought they would pop open a la Buzz Lightyear manually. Having it's wings always open seems like a poor design choice...

Also, I would like for this game to have a Hard mode but with my Captain Toad style twist!

There are no 1-ups in the stages. You're going to have to get extra lives the old fashioned way. Get extra lives every 100,000 points, 300,000 points, etc. The game is score based, isn't it? And for health, no extra health wedges. Get an extra wedge every 100 pac dots. And also add a timer that counts down. Probably enough for you to clear the stage but not enough as you go further in the game and as the timer reaches zero, you don't die but instead.... you get chased by Sue. Who's Sue? She's the purple ghost introduced in Ms. Pac Man and while not as prominent, she has appeared in Pac-Land and Pac Man-256.

So taking inspiration from Pac-Land, You get chased by Sue and will basically one shot kill if she touches you.

That's Hard mode, Captain Toad style. What do you think?

Minor nit's aside, I await it's release.

Captain Toad here, I have played and completed Pac-Man World Re-Pac. I will give my thoughts. I've played the whole thing docked.

Pluses

  • Pac-Man and his butt bouncing shenanigans feels just as good.
  • You are not gated from the final boss if you don't rescue all of the Pac-family though you may want to if you want to feel happier when facing Toc-Man....
  • Because along with the original ending unchanged, you get a second ending where re-meeting Orson on an eventual Pac-Man World 3 remake or not doesn't feel as awkward when you rescue all of the Pac-family.
  • Bosses are fun to fight. Anubis Rex is retuned and kinda feels like a hard but fair Cuphead boss, Krome Keeper feels more kinetic (restoring the concept boss was a good call!), an auto-fire button on the King Galxian fight, and Toc-Man is especially hard and comes with a few surprises if you played the original.
  • Get a high enough overall score and you get a master key to unlock all of the fruit doors.
  • Difficulty feels retuned overall.
  • There is a Peformance/Resolution mode so you can play this in either 60 frames or a better resolution....

+/- ...but the resolution bump on Resolution mode feels negligible on my end and overall runs and feels worse so just play in Performance mode. The game environment when Pac-Man moves the screen on either mode makes a slight but noticeable jitter and also some kinda rare frame drops but overall, it's nothing bothersome.
+/- Voices are not present but instead they talk in Pacamille or whether language they talk in pac land.
+/- Lives are handed to you like Halloween candy.
+/- Orson doesn't get a name here....
+/- There is no option for the original cinematic UI functionality like have it only appear when you take damage or collect a pac letter.
+/- Unused levels are not restored.

Misses
-Presentation and art direction doesn't do anything amazing to wow you a la Spyro and Crash remakes, never mind the performance issues.
-No Crash 4 style drop shadow or prominent drop shadow option on Pac-Man, that's a problem with a 3D platform game with a fixed camera.
-Cutscene outtakes do not return nor a reward for getting 100%.

  • Pac-Mom

Overall, if you're looking to feed your appetite for a 3-D Platforming adventure or just revisit Pac-Man World, Pac-Man World Re-Pac has you covered. 7.5/10.

I unfortunately won’t be able to buy it for now.

But well, perhaps by the time I can it’ll be on sale or something.

Fizza

@Captain_Toad I have a small question if you don't mind: what's the music like? I was watching a streamer play it recently and the music sounded very compressed/PS1-y and I'm wondering if that was just on my end. It's not a deal breaker if so but something that I've been curious to find out!

@Fizza The majority of the music is more or less has the compressed originals, few of which are new, and also some of music are retuned to midi. (Most noticeable when a cutscene introduces the ghost mansion.)

@NeonPizza It should be noted that the Switch version does provide the option to play in 60 fps. Enabling performance mode grants 60 fps at the cost of lower resolution.

Elvie

Elvie

@NeonPizza Performance mode displays 720p docked but I'm not sure what it drops to in handheld. However, the resolution drop is actually not that noticeable in either mode.

Hey Pac Landers. A new update has just been dropped. As promised, the credits crediting the original team has been done so that potental legal kerfuffle is resolved.

But that's not all....

For about $3.99 you get 2 more stuff.

1st. Originally a pre-order bonus, the Chrome Noir skin is available. You get this baby when you get the chrome power up. A toggle in the options menu.

And 2nd. You get the sound test in the form of a retro jukebox. Accessible in the hub world.

Other stuff like improved music quality, stability, and miscellaneous. Trailer below.
