Flugen

so what are the plans for this project?

Nintendo gave some games at the beginning, after one year(!!) added some more 3-4 (some of them never heard of) and from then...SILENCE. Its kind of sad...
I expected more from Nintendo, for a console with so much success.

@Flugen but they told you not to expect monthly updates. The service costs half as much as the competition. So even though it's laggy, there is no native voice chat, there is a silly app, there is no messaging it is a great deal. Plus they give you all these classic retro games which are worth far more than the shovelware you get for twice as much on Xbox or ps.

Yeah, I get the desire to have something new and am excited for future updates, but there's so much value in the NES/SNES app already that I have barely scratched the surface with. Count me as someone who thinks there's a good amount of value (not to mention, it's just the cost of admission to play all the online games I enjoy with my friends).

Be thankful Nintendo even let's you pay for their online service with your lack of gratitude.

Yea, bow down to your Nintendo overlords and just be thankful you're even allowed to own their systems.

I agree, the service is pretty much nothing more than 20 bucks a year for the ability to play online games. Which I'm... ok with, actually. Outside of PC, online gaming isn't free. It should be, but it isn't.

I will say the SNES library especially offers hundreds of hours of gameplay if that's your bag (which it's totally mine), but if you're not into those games then it's a total wash out.

I feel like the mobile app is needed because Nintendo wanted to offload the work of some of the more data heavy parts of the service (Voice Chat and such) so that the Switch doesn't have to juggle both that and the game play. But I would agree that Nintendo should at least try to team up with someone to host a few of their games. NVIDIA would be a good partner, but I'm not sure how happy Nintendo is willing to partner up with a different company. Gamespy and EA weren't the best roommates for them in the past...

If we start getting some N64 games it would make the service a lot more valuable to me, hopefully we will. More choice means people happy.

@rallydefault except Mario tennis, smash, mm2 are all laggy online experiences. I basically pay a subscription to be able to download MM2 maps.

I'm torn on it. I do think it needs some work. The little I've used the online functionality, it's been a bit laggy. And the slow trickle of classic games is a tad annoying. That said, I've spent about 200 hours on the NES and SNES apps, and finally got to play some of those all-time classics I missed the first time around (The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario 3, A Link to the Past, Kirby's Adventure). It's been quite the ride and I found some new (old) favorites along the way. So I'm thankful. Also, the fact that any game on the service is equally available to play means I've discovered some awesome titles I'd otherwise never have given the time of day to (Demon's Crest and Vice come to mind). I do hope they add more games to the service, though. And relatively soon. There's so much out there...

Same here with the NES/SNES games ... and the pass-the-controller feature has been great for going through some games for the first time with a couple friends I grew up with. I only wish you could have more than two people for the pass-the-controller feature.

I'd like a virtual console, and rollback Netcode in smash. Then I'd be happy to pay for online. At the moment it just feels like a multiplayer tax with less features than the Wii and Wii U

I've definitely had some laggy smash and tennis matches, but not the majority. Mario Kart has been flawless and splatoon 2 has been exellent. Sorry that all you can do is download mm2 maps, though I feel you are exaggerating a tad.

@rallydefault true I play tetris. My fault for forgetting that especially after unlocking the ring fit background.

2 and a half years in and the most compelling reasons for me to subscribe to NSO are the Ring Fit Adventure theme for Tetris 99 (which is likely to be unlockable with tickets at a later date like the others), and by extension the ability to play Tetris 99 online, and the ability to import QR code patterns into Animal Crossing: New Horizons (which remains free in New Leaf).

And I would much, much rather prefer the option to back-up my save data manually (and offline).

For me it's cloud saves, playing other people's Mario Maker 2 levels and Splatfests in Splatoon 2. Smash and Pokemon have awful lag, it's very hard to find matches in games like Mario Tennis Aces and ARMS (except during the free trial period) meanwhile MK8 Deluxe while very active and doesn't have lag problems desperately needs DLC to feel more fresh. The NSO retro collection is also very bad, it needs systems newer than SNES to be interesting.

When was it ever good? I don't consider drip feeding us 30 year old games that you can't buy and that everybody and their grandmother has already played good. Plus i never game online anyway. I'm a single player guy and hackers just ruin it for everybody else. Tried Playing MK 11 online once and after 10 minutes I'm like nope I'm out! Can't believe people are paying for this tripe.

I’ve renewed this year but I barely touch anything online, or the NES and SNES games. I’d have played Earthbound but had to on my 3DS instead as that’s not even on there.

I might dip back into SMM2 after the update, and that’ll probably be it. I hope something more compelling comes before I’m due to renew again.

Still haven't renewed from when it lapsed in October and honestly don't see that changing unless the add something substantial. With PS plus constantly on sale for $40-45 the value just isn't there at least for us.

Probably won't renew if they don't improve the online. To think it was better before the subscription model.

@sixrings
In that case, I'm sorry you can only download mm2 maps and play tetris lol
