Hello people, need help! I’m looking to buy the switch but don’t know if I should wait till the new switch oled comes out, I only want to use the switch docked because I already have the switch lite, is it worth waiting for the oled switch to come out to get a reduction in price for the non oled one? I would go go get the oled one but the flicker of oled screens gives me headaches and light sensitivity. I’m currently looking at the switch mario deluxe 8 deal on curry website for 299, will it get much cheaper than that? Any recommended places to buy a cheap switch? Any help with be appreciated.

@Indecisiveguy Sounds like you'd be better off with the original model. Most of the OLED's new features really only benefit handheld/tabletop mode, and it has the same specs as the base model anyway. It has 64 GB of internal storage and its dock has a built-in ethernet port, but yeah from reading your post, I would recommend the original Switch model.

So don't get oled I got you. What do you suggest waiting for the piece of the switch to you down on price when the oled one comes out or is it as cheap as it's going to get now? Currently, you can get a 270 switch Amazon or currys in the uk or get switch and Mario deluxe 8 for 299, should I wait for price to go down or go for one of these, I am currently looking on eBay but one must be careful on there lol

The OLED is 350usd and old one probably 299.99usd and that price probably won't come down just because a OLED is coming. And considering OLED preorders are more or less gone waiting will well into 2022 if inventory comes back. A Switch v2 with smaller screen is still good and when Docked both act the same nothing different no GPU upgrade when Docking.

If you go with the standard model, you could always use the price difference to purchase a good Micro SD card. You could easily get a 256GB card or even a 400GB one if they were on sale.

@Indecisiveguy With the pandemic, the chip shortage, I think we may never see a price drop for the regular Switch for the next year (bloomberg recently reported recently chip shortage coudl last until 2023 due to covid). Those deals you cited, $299(uk) for console bundled with game, $270 (no game bundled), That's as good as it gets, I think for the next year, possibly longer. The bundle offers you a game for much less than you'll ever find it retail, or on sale - That's the best deal for a Mario Kart 8 you'll ever see.

Even pre-pandemic, Wii U retail price never dropped at the end of it's life, as far as I saw here in the US. Since the pandmic and last christmas, new 3ds consoles can only be found for scalper prices online. Used and new console demand has been so high since pandemic that prices have been quite inflated since. People are buying used New 3ds consoles for near what they were new.

You make a really good point my friend do you think if I buy the oled if I ever want to sell it, it will hold its value better? I know the old switch with the poor battery tends to sell for a lot less

If you only play docked, the OLED-Switch has two main additions:
64GB internal storage instead of the 32GB that the old models have
and the integrated LAN-port (where the old model is WLAN).
All the other enhancements (OLED-screen, better speakers, battery life, kickstand) are only beneficial for handheld use.

I play docked mainly as well, and there was never a reason to buy any other model other than the very first. You likely get at least a 512GB microSD card for extended storage anyway, and only the worst internet connections need LAN.

But - if I had no Switch, I would wait for the OLED. As much as I play docked, it's practical to have it portable sometimes, and having shinier graphics and clearer sound than what you'd get with the old model is a definite plus, especially since a few games (the ones that rely heavily on touchscreen control) only work in handheld mode.

The v2 ran the same as the OLED is going to run not difference. And it hasn't sold any less maybe a used v1, v2 would sell less but then again you get what you pay for.

Better speaker only works with updated chipsets of which there is none and battery life is more or less the same as the v2. 65gb is good but then again what we really need is a better software transfer system on PC system not using wifi and connecting to your online account just to move data from old Switch to a replacement or New Switch.

I use that money and buy a 1tb microSD card instead.

No Switch you can save alot more getting v2 Switch and even when portable the screen play is the same OLED doesn't improve graphics performance that is a upgrade GPU that will do that.

@SwitchForce

You don't need a new chipset just for better quality speakers. That concept would be very strange. Your assumption goes against official confirmation as well.

And no one said that OLED-Switch graphics are improved, it's just the visual quality that is improved in handheld mode compared to the other Switch models. And that's what I call "better graphics (in handheld mode)". It's like when you buy a new expensive tv with an improved screen and the games look better because of it.

Yeah, if you have many games you should get a huge microSD card. 512 GB is the cost-effective standard at the moment though. If you wanna download many games even 1TB won't be enough.

And this swapperoo shifting-data-to-PC busywork is exactly the reason I buy my games on cartridge.

OLED screens don't flicker, not sure where you're getting that from

I mean, eh. Kinda. Preffering a wired connection has nothing to do with the quality of your "internet connection", it more about the consistency of WiFi. A wired connection will ALWAYS be more stable than a wireless one. When we're talking about a good connection for gaming what we want is low and consistent pings. You can get consistently <1ms to your router on a wired LAN with no issue, on awesome WiFi you're probably hovering around 1-8ms. That latency goes ontop of your internet connection

I mean you can also get a solid 950Mbps on a wired connection vs probably something in the 300-600Mbps ranged for solid WiFi. And there's also 2.5, 5 and 10Gbps Ethernet now while WiFi is still short of saturating 1Gbps in real world use. But that's irrelivant in terms of gaming, unless your intent is to do in-home streaming but... that's another discussion....

Anyways, with all that said. Your setentiment is right it's not something I'd go out of my way for. You can get a USB LAN adapter AND a 512GB microSD card and still be less than the cost gap between the Switch and Switch OLED model. So you are right in that sense, definitely not worth going for the OLED model if you're playing docked only

There really is no point in having both a switch and switch lite unless you plan to be playing games on the tv alot. I wouldn't mind having the normal switch but I like the size and handheld style of the lite as well.
