@Bolt_Strike I didn't say Mario Kart 9 was a spinoff lol. But quite frankly? I think Nintendo believes the last main series Mario Kart was released in 2019 and is still getting support. I doubt we'll see another console MK so long as that gambling app isn't dead, unless we get a new system entirely and it's still going.
As for Splatoon, anyone other than the main team? The whole point of spinoffs is that they are usually developed by another team entirely. It's that way for Zelda, Metroid, Mario, all of Nintendo's series. If I were to take a guess though, I'd wager that it may be contracted out to Bandai-Namco. Though, it's hard to say without knowing what genre it'll be. I could see it being Sega if it's an RPG... Or possibly, it's even been handed over to one of Monolith's new teams? It could also just be internal, on a separate team. Who knows really?
@TheFrenchiestFry Well, I'm assuming they've learned their lesson after how longer Persona 5 and SMT V both took to develop from those initial announcements. Persona 6 probably went into pre-production alongside the development of Royal's new content. So that gives us another ~2-3 years before Persona 6, plenty of time for another spinoff to happen. Though, admittedly, Arena is the only existing subseries that doesn't have a 5 variant yet.
But tbh, I think the biggest thing holding up P5S at the moment is Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity. K-T isn't going to want to release P5S on Switch too close to that, Warriors games tend to eat each other's sales, hard. So I'd wager the localization is a minimum of 6 months after that instead.
@link3710 I mean it didn't stop Koei from releasing Fire Emblem Warriors and Hyrule Warriors DE so close together
Not even to mention other crossover content like the One Piece Pirate Warriors games
I think the only thing that will be spaced out in terms of release scheduling is making sure P5S being on Switch doesn't overshadow SMTV or Nocturne HD given that Persona is easily the more recognizable out of the two series despite the fact it doesn't have as concrete of a presence on Nintendo systems compared to the former
@Octane Mario Kart sells so insanely well that it'll easily make up the development and marketing costs. Whatever insane sales 8D already has, the new game will sell that much better because it's newer and more relevant. Doubly so if it actually takes advantage of the Switch's hardware to do something new and unique. They're not going to overthink this, if they have a new idea for Mario Kart, they're going to go for it. And considering how extremely versatile the Switch is and how much more they can do with Mario Kart, I find it hard to believe they don't.
@Euler We're already past that point with Home Circuit.
@link3710 Nintendo doesn't see mobile games as main games, they've designed them all with the intent of promoting their IPs to get mobile players to buy a Switch. Every mobile game they've produced has been followed up with a main series entry a year or two after release. Super Mario Run was followed by Super Mario Odyssey. Fire Emblem Heroes was followed up by Fire Emblem: Three Houses. Animal Crossing Pocket Camp was followed up by Animal Crossing New Horizons. Those games were all designed to help sell the main series entries that followed. So Mario Kart Tour is also designed to help sell a future entry, and I doubt it's Home Circuit since that's an expensive AR spinoff.
@TheFrenchiestFry Fire Emblem and Hyrule Warriors DE were released 7 months apart. Pirate Warriors 4 is 6 months prior to Age of Calamity. Also, for the record, I was referring to their 'new' releases, not ports (which, when it comes to Warriors, is a distinction you really have to make).
I'll admit, the fact that P5S wasn't translated in the same time frame as other Warriors games puts it on a bit of an unknown, but I highly doubt there will be anything less than a 5 month gap between it and any other 'new' Warriors titles on Switch. Especially Hyrule Warriors, as that is by far the best selling Warriors subseries.
@link3710 Yeah an important distinction to make is that P5S was probably meant to come out a lot sooner but COVID put a dent in a lot of things. I have no doubt that they probably went the "voice acting remotely" route that the Persona 5 cast members did when recording for the English dub of the P5 Animation, but unlike an anime there's a lot more to the localization process than just dubbing over Japanese audio, so if they're giving P5S the full dub treatment unlike PQ2, it's safe to assume COVID disrupted that game's schedule. It didn't help that the Japanese version of the game came out right when the pandemic was really starting to make waves.

@Bolt_Strike Mario Kart Home Tour is a spin-off, it doesn’t count. If there was a market for more than one main series Mario Kart per console, they would’ve surely done that with one of the previous consoles (the Wii and DS lasted quite a while).
@Euler The Wii and DS didn't need more than one per console because they were running concurrently and the timing lined up perfectly for them to keep it one per console without there being too long of a gap between games. Once they finished MKDS, they moved on to MKWii. After that, they were ready to move onto the 3DS with MK7. The Switch doesn't have that luxury because it's the only Nintendo hardware at present with no new hardware in sight. It's getting everything that we would've gotten on a handheld and a console. Because of that, the gaps in between games would be MUCH longer if they stick to one per console. The combination of that and the fact that they only have a port for Mario Kart instead of a new game make it entirely plausible for this to be an exception, as this is the first time that Nintendo has ported an older Mario Kart game to a new console instead of just remaking its tracks in newer games.
@bolt_strike .. I think you're looking at it from the wrong way... ofcourse they could make a new one, and the 1 per console might not be holy, and i would sell because it would be mario kart (but less so becvause people already have mario kart on the console) , but what could they possibly do which is more than a glorified data) disk... If you would make a sequel, you would anger lots of people here (not that that ever stopped them, but anyway),... would that energy not better be send to a new game (not being kart)..
Personally i would like some DLC, or integration with the new home edition.. And since the made the metromap in mario's metro, i would love an overal structure, diddykong racing style, but that would be dreaming probably;)
A LOT of MK8D purchases will be from people who just wanted Mario Kart for their new console. I'd guess at least half of MK8D buyers wouldn't bother buying MK9 if it released on the same hardware. And then you'd have a split online community which wouldn't be great for anyone.
Given that MK8D is still selling well, it would make sense to me to leave MK9 as long as possible, probably for the next generation of Nintendo hardware.
Anyway, what's this got to do with the next Direct?
I think we're gonna get a Mr Sakurai presents some time next week (the week of the 21st) revealing FP 7 and announcing the character's release the following week, being the week the amiibo release.
OR
There's gonna be a Pokemon presentation either this week or next detailing Crown Tundra and New Pokemon Snap and whatever else is upcoming, as well as that a new Pokemon character is actually FP 7, with the Mr Sakurai Presents and the character's release to follow on the amiibo week. I also predict that at the next Mr Sakurai he'll reveal that the Banjo and Kazooie and Terry amiibo (and maybe Byleth/Byleth P2 as well if they feel like rounding out Challenger Pack 1. We'll see.) will release Winter 2021, which will later be dated to February 12, the same day as the 3D world amiibo. This would also indicate that mid February 2021 is when we'll get FP 8.
@link3710 Yeah there's an update on Age of Calamity coming on the 26th. That's a Saturday though so I wouldn't be surprised if we got some other news earlier in the week. That's probably going to be a Partner Showcase though.
I think Smash will be two weeks after, which is the first full week of October. Then a release of the fighter the following week.
