@Dezzy Given the video is labelled "July 2020" instead of the full date like in all the other Directs, I think the only news we'll get for the rest of the month is the early August Animal Crossing update revealed in a random trailer.

@sixrings you missed the point and got the odds wrong, it's a leap year

Nintendo publishes its earnings for Apr-Jun 2020 on August 6th, so I expect first party news shortly before then. There is no investor meeting though.

Getting the date right is such a low bar.

Why are so many people defending leakers who are getting things wrong all of a sudden?

The vast majority of so called leakers are complete rubbish. Just people going for attention and clout. Jeff Grubb has a track record of leaking information even outside of the Nintendo community. Leaking the date for the Playstation showcase exactly for example.

Kelios has correctly stated the date for two Nintendo directs now and even stated the exact time when Nintendo would announce this direct. It was also done on Resetera which means they can't simply randomly guess or alter their information like one could do on Twitter or other platforms where you can just make multiple accounts easily and stuff.

They do get stuff wrong though, but they come with a history that makes it hard to ignore imo

@jump Accurately informing people the exact date a Direct will happen is "low bar"?

Erm what?

Its nearly 50/50 with thumbs up and down on nintendos YouTube channel for the direct mini. If that doesn't open up theirs eyes, not sure what will.

@NintendoByNature I know. Why would they even do this? Just to mess with us? We need to comment bomb them too on YouTube and Twitter. This is ridiculous. I'm paper Mario is not sufficient for entire year. That Direct makes it seem like Nintendo is moving on from the Switch

Open their eyes to what? There is a pandemic going on, if you haven't noticed. It is very likely that in-house development outright halted around February, and has been slowly ramping back up. Japan isn't known for its work-from-home infrastructure. It makes sense that first party games are slowing down right now. So of course there aren't going to be a lot of big announcements for the rest of the year. And that isn't Nintendo's fault, that's just the way it is right now. I feel like people are becoming incredibly entitled with this sort of thing. They explicitly stated what this would be too, so I really don't get the anger.

So I wonder when Doom Eternal is coming out. That's all I wanted - it wasn't even particularly outlandish or unreasonable - and we didn't even get that

@-Green- @Reprise if you get joy in finding out the dates of Directs good for you but people really want the game reveals and information. I don't see any point in patting someone on the back for getting the date right and everything else widely wrong.

@Dezzy @sixrings Uh, definite real? Cause we have Super Mario, Mario Kart, Smash Bros, Animal Crossing, Splatoon, Luigi's Mansion, Pokemon, Mario Party, Zelda, Tomodachi, Nintendogs, that all regularly surpass 3 mil (huge for a video game), and Donkey Kong, Xenoblade, Kirby, Yoshi, Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi, and Warioware that all regularly surpass 1 mil.

At the very least, you kinda have to give Super Smash Bros (which is definitely not a Mario game), Animal Crossing, Splatoon, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade, Kirby (yes it's owned by Nintendo, not HAL, they're just the developers) and Pokemon their dues if you're mentioning Mario, DK, Zelda and Metroid as big, even if you combine everything you can and remove the casual focused series like Nintendogs and Tomodachi.

@jump I'm not patting on them back tbh. I was just sharing what I've seen and noted based on stuff. It's been mostly boring times

@Grumblevolcano I think that means we'll be getting third party showcases monthly. It doesn't mean there won't be other kinds of directs alongside them.

Dezzy

Oh well if Nintendo isn't gonna announce anything bigger, I guess I'll just temporarily become an Xbox fan again. Lol

@link3710

Well I was just referring to the fact that a single Pokemon game will sell more copies than Yoshi, Fire Emblem, Xenoblade and Metroid combined.

That's all I meant. I wasn't suggesting they were better. I would buy Fire Emblem, Xenoblade and Metroid before Pokemon any day. But obviously there's a mainstream support for certain key Nintendo franchises that hasn't extended to lots of others.

The reception following the Mini Direct is about what I expected. I wasn't compelled enough to catch it live, but it was nice to finally see SMTV's existence affirmed. I gleaned what I could from the headlines, and I'm already thinking about the next Direct.

Combine this with Sony dropping the hotly anticipated (and now well-received) Ghosts of Tsushima, and we find ourselves in a bit of an underwhelming situation. What do we have: Paper Mario, a series that reliably divides the Nintendo community whenever it rears its head?

Does everyone remember the Switch's first year; first-party Nintendo heavy hitters seemingly dropping back-to-back? Those were good times. Nintendo really had us fooled into thinking we could expect that same kind of energy from the console long-term.

In fairness Pokemon will out sell a lot of 4 randomly selected recognisable franchises. Pokemon is a juggernaut on steroids.

@jump It's not that I find "joy" in it. I'm just saying clearly they didn't pluck random dates out of their arse. They clearly are able to obtain accurate inside information. I have no idea what they got wrong or whatever, because leakers aren't all one homogenous entity and it all gets muddied by clickbait youtubers, "influencers" and video games sites. I don't follow it clearly, so I don't know if there's a specific leaker who promised stuff that didn't happen. I just know sites like this one reported a leaker had said a Direct would happen on the 20th and they were right.

Also a leak is always as accurate as the point it was obtained. What I mean is, plans can change, delays can happen. The pandemic has supposedly had a pretty big impact on Nintendo's development. So just because something a leaker says doesn't happen or doesn't happen immediately, it doesn't necessarily mean they're full of *****. They could have said what was correct at the time, but plans changed behind the scene.

Plans change all the time. Sega were working on an entire remake of both Shenmue 1 and 2 and then scrapped the whole project, instead opting to just port the games with some minor improvements. That news didn't leak until long after the project had been cancelled and the HD ports had been released, but if it had leaked during development and then never came out people would be claiming the leakers were full of *****, when actually it was true, the project was just scrapped before even being announced.

@Reprise that’s all very well and good but the date was the ONLY thing they got right and everything else massively wrong so the statement they were mostly right seems ridiculous to me.

I got the date right too, problem is I don’t have a twitter account 😉

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

MarioBrickLayer

I don't think we'll see a Direct or Mini with 1st party games this year, I think each game will be shadow dropped, one at a time, nothing new whilst a release is pending.

Maybe we'll see something slightly different (multiple shadow drops) if there is more than one game coming between mid November and end of December

@jump Sorry, I missed what else was predicted. I must have entered this thread mid discussion and missed other parts, sorry about that. All that I recall sites and youtubers stating was that a Direct would happen on the 20th. Did it come from a specific leaker then and they made other bold predictions?

I'm sure others here will dispute this, @Reprise .... But I think the actual leakers just said a direct or something was coming today! Then, when people passed that on, they added about Mario & all sorts Or perhaps people pestered the leakers for details so much that they made some of those up? As usual, these things spread so fast it's very hard to be sure exactly
