@IceClimbers I think it's more about the absence of SMB Wonder news to be honest. Looking back at the games in its slot and news received around this time:

  • 2022 - Sparks of Hope - Season pass announced; Bayonetta 3 - Nothing
  • 2021 - Metroid Dread - Regular new info throughout the month; Mario Party Superstars - Nothing though it is a "greatest hits" collection game so didn't need much revealing in the first place
  • 2020 - Pikmin 3 Deluxe - Announced in August
  • 2019 - Luigi's Mansion 3 - New gameplay at Gamescom
  • 2018 - Super Mario Party - New gameplay at Gamescom
  • 2017 - Fire Emblem Warriors, Super Mario Odyssey - New gameplay at Gamescom

On another note, Nintendo removed the June Direct and its individual videos from the Switch news section. They do this when a new Direct is close by but I don't remember the exact timeframe (e.g. how close removing the February Direct was to the June Direct's airing).

I can certainly see a Nintendo Direct focused on the tail end of the year. Either September or October because by November people shift into a different mode. A September Direct with a focus on Wonder, the last of the Mario Kart 8 DLC and maybe some NSO stuff or similar would make sense

Certainly not the Direct to be dropping a huge bombshells in though

@skywake Probably a focus on some bigger 3rd party games also. I'm assuming we won't hear more about Peach game yet since it was so vague last time.

I'm thinking a September direct is dead certain. Nintendo just have too many "open cases" where they've done a reveal and not given new info since, both for 2023 and beyond (e.g., side order, Wonder, BPC, Untitled Peach Game).

There's also always the chance of a unexpected reveal, like Prime 4 or some TOTK DLC.

Hope you're having a good day.

GrailUK

Do they have a game planned for September? If not, I wonder what they could shadowdrop. If it's anything like Prime Remaster, we'll have to wait for the physical. Hmm, is it time for F-Zero GX?

Don't forget LEVEL-5 games.
Deca Police, Fantasy Life Switch and probably new Yokai Watch games.

@GrailUK On the physical side there's Pikmin 1+2 and on the digital side there's The Teal Mask. I do think they'll shadow drop more Metroid in the next Direct to keep Metroid momentum going (Prime 2 Remastered or a bundle of Prime 2+3 like how Pikmin 1+2 was done).

@Anti-Matter Deca Police looks fantastic!

@Grumblevolcano I reckon Echos is going to get the Skyward Sword treatment. HDify it and add a modern control scheme. I fear it might be asking too much for the Prime Remaster treatment (I mean, that was above and beyond what we were expecting lol! Not sure it's cool to expect that as a standard - or at least such a quick turnaround for the next installment lol!) A bundle with 3 would be ideal, of course, but that has way more nuances with the controls and interactions to iron out (I think a developer even flat out said that.) again, for so soon after the last one, maybe.

TheBigBlue

@GrailUK I agree. If Nintendo wants to continue with the Metroid prime hype train anytime soon, they won’t wait a year or two for the next game to be fully remastered like Prime 1 did. That remaster took much longer than a typical hd port* would like Skyward Sword. So if prime 2 is due for next month (still don’t think it will happen yet) it will most likely be in HD form.

*with updated controls

@TheBigBlue I think they would be best served to get another franchise on the system. With the Switch steam rolling it's way to 150 Million users, they should be thinking about those folk in 12 years time getting the nostalgia itch for as many games as possibe and demanding remakes of the games they played on Switch hahah. (Coz, that's how it seems to work lol!) So, again, I reckon F-Zero GX. because that ensures another generation of kids grow up with the perception that Nintendo are doing nothing with it
(yeah ok, slightly sarcastic!)

I wonder if the ol' F-Zero GX and Paper Mario TTYD rumour will ever come to fruition.
Maayybe for F-Zero but with Super Mario RPG around the corner, I don't think they would be rushing to put something else out of a similar ilk.

I personally think the next direct will be on September 13th, as it follows previous patterns. But I wouldn’t put it past nintendo to do an indie world before the end of August aswell

Praying for Earthblade in whenever the next indie world is 🙏

Also hoping for TTYD and MP2 ports in the next direct

Wasn't above and beyond what I was expecting. Or at least not above and beyond what I wanted, most remakes have actually fallen short of that because there's far too much of a focus on improving graphics and not enough of improving gameplay. And as great as Metroid Prime is, it does have some gameplay things that could've been improved that Prime Remastered ignored (too much linearity/not enough content in certain areas such as Magmoor Caverns and Phazon Mines, poor pacing due to long backtracking segments and lack of fast travel, no QoL features to address the issues with missable scans, no new powerups like ZM/SR added to their remakes). There's just... so much missed opportunity to actually modernize the experience instead of just looking prettier. I will admit the graphics look better than I expected, but I'm not impressed with the full package.

Now do I expect a Prime 2 Remastered to surpass Prime Remastered? Of course not, they're not going to raise the bar for Prime 2 when Prime 1 is more popular. But I vehemently disagree with the notion that Prime Remastered is some miraculous masterpiece that's better than we deserve.
