Luckily, we're nowhere near the droughts of the Wii U or Nintendo 64 eras it was said. And I agree.

I don't think that's quite true in terms of first party Nintendo games. I remember one particularly rough drought in the Wii U years, which was from the Wii U launched and lasted about 6 months or so. That was made even worse when Rayman Legends was delayed and went multiplatform (if I'm remembering this correctly). Otherwise Nintendo was killing it most of the Wii U's lifespan in my opinion... Plus there was also the 3DS getting loads of quality titles. This is the worst year for Nintendo titles in a long time, if not ever. Fortunately, third party support is much better than it has been since the days of the SNES, although it's very heavy in terms of ports.

Whilst the Wii U drought get's exaggerated, I think it was something like 5 games a year on average from Ninty, the problem was a noticeable dip in quality imo.

Like for example Mario Party, Mario Tennis, Game & Wario were very weak entries for the series and some of the more experimental titles were wild hits and misses. Whilst Mario Maker, NES Remix & Splatoon crushed it you had Animal Crossing Amiibo Party, Pokémon Rumble U & Star Fox Zero which were dire.

Is that 5 titles in total though or just on the Wii U? As the 3DS was also a thing in those years. Given both development areas have been consolidated into one department, with the Switch occupying both the home console and handheld console space, we really should be looking at the totality.

Also, I agree their sort of B series (don't really know what else to call them) dipped in terms of quality, the likes of Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, Mario Kart 8 and Smash Bros Wii U were awesome (the latter two being my favourites in their respective series until the Switch versions arrived - and the same can be said for BOTW if we can include that as a Wii U game).

@Reprise

It's a guesstimate for the Wii U.

I wouldn't say it's as simple as no more portable = more home consoles games. The development of HD games is more difficult so more resources are required than a 3DS game, they were still releasing first party games on the 3DS last year, they are handling ports in house rather than outsourcing them like they did on the Wii U and Ninty have also expanded into mobile games releasing a couple a year.

@jump If HD games are too difficult for Nintendo then good luck when they get to 4k gaming.

@sixrings I never said it was too difficult, I said it takes more resources than a 3DS game.

@sixrings @jump Nintendo did go on record during the Wii U days that they underestimated the amount of work that was required to make HD games compared to the type of games they’d been doing up to them. I think they’re still struggling to a degree despite now having the 3DS teams all on board. Add to that, the pandemic has obviously screwed them pretty bad compared to others. I imagine next year could be pretty hard for them too. It all depends on how Japan fairs with everything going on, they’re still unsure about the Olympics so that’s not a good sign.

This sounds like the perfect cross promotion opportunity, Nintendo will send Switches to all the countries with copies of Mario & Sonic Olympics and the athletes can compete at home.

@jump But doesn’t that require Nintendo to be able to get both hardware and software out, and then be able to communicate together to be able to send out all the systems and games to the athletes? You’re giving Nintendo way too much credit

The comments about struggling with HD games was made by Miyamoto in 2013, and there have been lots of HD releases since then, if they are still struggling with HD then someone should be sacked!! 7 years is more than enough time to adapt.

I will tell Miyamoto you've sacked him.

@jump Poor Miyamoto, he was so close to retirement age.

He actually passed the retirement age a few years ago.

Thinking about it his official title is now "fellow"...a rather random one. Maybe he has retired and this is a sudo-title not to worry people about him leaving like when they kept putting Stan Lee's name on things for Marvel

@jump And just like Stan Lee, Miyamoto will never die and will outlive us all.

Wii U drought was definitely exaggerated. I still have more Wii U games than PS4, Xbone, or Switch games. (unless you include X360 games as being part of Xbone)

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

Or Weekend at Bernies with a Virtual Boy instead of sunglasses on his head.

I don't think the Wii U droughts were exaggerated:

  • Launch to Pikmin 3
  • MK8 to Hyrule Warriors
  • Splatoon to Super Mario Maker (this one applies only to NA, everywhere else got Yoshi in between)
  • Tokyo Mirage Sessions to Paper Mario Color Splash

All were 4+ month droughts.

@Grumblevolcano Nah, off the top of my head Game & Wario came out between launch and Pikmin 3 and Star Fox Zero came out between Tokyo Mirage and Paper Mario. There's probably more but I can't be arsed creating a spreadsheet for this.

They were rubbish games but they should still count.

@jump @grumblevolcano

Since I love numbers:

  • Launch to New Super Luigi U and Game & Wario was still a 7 month gap (November to June 2013). It was only 5 months if you consider Lego City Undercover first party though.
  • Mario Kart 8 to Hyrule Warriors was a 4 month gap (May to September 2014)
  • Splatoon to Mario Maker was also a 4-month gap (May to September 2015)
  • Tokyo Mirage Sessions to Paper Mario was also a 4 month gap (June to October 2016) (Star Fox Zero launched in April)
  • Paper Mario to LoZ: Breath of the Wild was a 5 month gap (October to March 2017).

Notably, looking at this it's clear there was at least a 4 month gap of software every single year of the system's lifespan, which supports @Grumblevolcano 's claim.
