@Spoony_Tech Well that's what rumours and leaks do. The combination of the rumour/leak, MH World being announced at the Sony E3 conference and no news about a MHXX localization is more than enough to push Nintendo fans over the edge.
Monster Hunter XX will likely see a localisation. Most if not all of the translation is done from the 3DS version. It would be stupid of Capcom not to release it in the West. They may have saved the announcement until after the MH: World news died down, hoping that when they do say something, Switch owners will be grateful for at least being thrown a bone.
Debating on whether I should also buy digital on release day so I don't have to wait for the physical import. And with the save transfer from 3DS, I could have my save data on both my Switches, ho ho ho...
It was over the top, but I'm glad it happened because it let Capcom know there is a huge chunk of the community expecting the series on Switch. But it was the fact people were almost certain MH would be announced for Switch in the west at e3 (including me) and not only was it not announced, a brand new game was announced for everything but the Switch.
But thanks to the 3DS English translation and save transfers between back and forth with that version, google translate app, the fact the game is extremely playable in another language, and Nintendo's decision to make Switch region free, it's still a win for MH fans. Barely though. We scraped by by the skin of our teeth here.
edit
Screw it. Just added 6,000Â¥ to my JP eShop account. I'm still importing physical but, I can't wait that extra week. Screw that. Come August 25th it's Monster Hunting time. Actually easy to buy eShop cred on the cheap too from Amazon Japan. Just make sure you have a JP address saved in your addresses (I used my Tenso forwarded account address) and when you click to buy, it tells you you are not in Japan and provides a link to change your country settings. Then you just select your Japanese address from the drop-down box and proceed with purchase. It instantly generates a tab with the code in it as well as an email. Yen is a little higher vs the dollar ATM, but it was still about $53 total for 6,000Â¥ which is exactly enough to buy MHXX digitally.
Can we all agree that this was blown way out of proportion. All they said was we have no plans at this time and the internet (including myself) exploded into why not or you suck and I hate you. Maybe, just maybe, they wanted to save it for another announcement down the road.
People become tryhards to hate on Capcom pretty frequently. I really, deeply believe that with Stories coming west, if it performs even decently well — even with Nintendo translating — XX Switch will come as well. The whole reason Nintendo would translate Stories is because they're grasping for straws for 3DS releases. After this year's Monster Hunter game releases, they'll be in the same position and spring for the next, easiest target — if Capcom doesn't get to it first.
So this is strange: They're showing XX off at a Japanese pop culture convention in Paris. The more I look at this whole thing, like with Capcom correcting those incompetent journalists, the more it feels like this game is in some kind of contractually kept under wraps marketing cycle. Maybe we'll see something during the next full Nintendo Direct when Sony's E3 money has had a chance to wear off.
I'm not going the japanese way, especially because I want to be able to play on lower lag settings And not being able to read it helps too.
To be honest, I'm kind of assuming the localisation will happen. It's crazy easy money to make for them since all the assets already have english names and all that. You could have two interns localise it in a month and make a couple 100k more off the same game at the very least.
Us not knowing anything might have something to do with either mh world or something new coming to switch.
@Tsurii Thanks for the info. I really don't understand the frustration though, especially considering this whole excuse for a controversy was started by Capcom daring to announce a cool new video game.
There are clearly rights and contracts at play, and I think Capcom will announce XX for the west closer to when it's releasing here.
I'm not going to do the Japanese route since I actually like the story and interactions with characters. However, if they localise it, then that'll get me more eager to grab a Switch.
Hey guys.....need some advise. I never played any Monster Hunter game, but always been curious about it. I am wondering if I should start it or not?
I usually appreciate games like Darksiders, Devil's Third, Breath of the Wild, Shantae, Metroid Prime... and I do not like games taking more than 20 hours to complete (too repetitive for me after a while, I do not like grinding...) what do you guys think?
Uhhh, well all of us seem to play Monster Hunter for longer than 20 hours. I feel like you could blitz through the game and see most of the content in like 50 hours if you're a quick learner, but it's a very time consuming RPG generally. Also, Breath of the Wild was way longer than a 20 hour game.
This game has all my hype and attention. I can't stop thinking about it. The fact it's looking like the whole armor and skill system has potentially been... changed.... in their big upcoming game to make it easier, has dealt a devastating blow to my hype, so my focus is almost completely with MHXX now.
It's encouraging seeing MHXX at Japan Expo. At least Nintendo cares about it enough to want it there. Which means they may care enough to localize it like they're doing for Stories.
@crimsontadpoles
I like that too... but it's not enough to keep me from my Monster Hunter. I've never played a game in Japanese before, but with a 3DS English translation and save transfers to and from that version... and the fact MHX/MHXX had mostly meaningless dialog anyways (which I think was one of your complaints with Gen) that actually works to the game's favor for importing purposes.
Got my Gen save file transferred into a MHX save, and imported to MHXX on 3DS, which can now be transferred to Switch. So it's basically just transfer and start hunting. Actually quit playing right as I made a killer high rank Garuga armor set. So I'll be set for at least 100 hrs of hunting before even beginning to think about crafting or upgrading.

@JaxonH As much as I love Monster Hunter, I'll concede that you're a way bigger fan of it than me. If they localise it, then I'll grab it once I finally get round to grabbing a Switch (or if they also release the 3DS version then I might get that instead if I'm still without a Switch by then). But I don't think I could go through the trouble of playing it in a different language like you.
I kinda forgot how much the dialogue dragged on in Generations until you mentioned it. I still liked the dialogue, but Generations had way too many people wanting to speak with you, only to say something meaningless. 4U did the story and dialogue much better.
@crimsontadpoles
Honestly, I never thought I could love it enough to play in another language either. But as the thought of it possibly not being localized set it, I thought long and hard about how difficult it would actually be. And I was watching some Japanese gameplay of it on switch when it hit me like a brick- The game practically looked identical when you're actually hunting monsters. Even the long sword gauge said Max in English. Items show icons. Quests are color coded... And I thought, well, most of the game is spent out on quests hunting monsters anyways, and if it's no different when you're out on quests then, how hard can it be.
The English translation on 3DS is what really pushed me over the edge though. That and the fact you can do is save transfer at anytime you want. So, say I hunt for 100 hrs and do like half the high rank quests, and let's say I see some new armor pop up in the armory that looks really cool, I can transfer the save to 3DS in like 60 seconds, then check the 3DS version for the materials I need and then resume playing on Switch. I think I just had to get over that mental block I had where I was telling myself it was too difficult and I could never do it. The Google translate app also instantly translates from your phone with the camera, I even tested it with some Japanese dialogue in the 3DS version of MHXX and it works beautifully.
I just remember MH3U on Wii U, and it looked so good in high definition, and this game looks even better. And I want that so badly. And I really want it for when I'm at work- set it up in tabletop mode, slide off controllers and experience console MH, even hunting online via hotspot... or when I'm at the car dealership waiting on a wash and oil change, or whatever. I want it so bad I can taste it. I want it bad enough that Japanese dialogue is it going to stop me. And I think it'll be a good learning experience, just in case there's future games that release that don't get localized.

@JaxonH Have lots of fun playing it. I'm still slightly burnt out from lots of 3DS Monster Hunter, but I might think about doing the Japanese route as well if I get desperate enough. Though with Worlds being released eventually, that's going to satisfy my Monster Hunter cravings for a long time.
Even if it's not too difficult to play the Japanese version, it could still be tedious. Using apps to translate, and transferring data and looking online for translations is more effort then I'm willing to put in for this game.
But I'm still optimistic that XX will get localised eventually.
@crimsontadpoles
Oh ya, I do hope it gets translated eventually. But I can't wait. I'm tired of playing on 3DS. I love that little system, I do, but the pixelated MH with C stick is getting old, and Switch is just so right for MH. And the new one is a long ways off yet (and the more I learn about it the less I'm liking it).
Got about a month to enjoy Splatoon 2 and then August/Sept is gonna be crazy with MHXX, Mario Kingdom Battle (game everyone had written off looks like one of the best games coming to the system now) and Metroid Samus Returns all competing for playtime. Gosh I hate going back to 3DS now but, it's Metroid, so I can't complain. And only a month to play all of them cause Monster Hunter Stories and Mario Odyssey and Xenoblade 2 and Fire Emblem Warriors and Skyrim are coming fast. Then there'll be a little lull (a much needed one, to catch up on all these games). And then Monster Hunter World and Kirby will likely kick off the new year in style.
It's a good time to be a gamer, and a MH fan.
