Monster Hunter is a complex game and requires the player to actually commit to learning the game. I can’t tell you how many new players just try a demo and know nothing about the game and think the controls are bad. They’re not. They’re best controls of any video game in the history of the medium (not even kidding, the controls are THE reason the game is so fun and addictive). But you’re not going to realize that until you learn a weapon and understand its moveset.

This is the greatest video game of all time but you will never know it if you don’t commit to learn. It’s true that the demo is not the best learning experience for a new player, and it throws all kinds of mechanics at you at once. But many people have learned this game and you can too if you decide to.

I can assure you if you invest the time to pick a good beginner weapon (like Longsword or hunting horn), practice the moves and read the hunter notes in the game for some good combos, ask for advice as you play and then watch a Gaijin Hunter tutorial on YT for your weapon, it’ll be a completely different experience.

But if you just give up right away because you don’t get it you’re gonna miss out on what could have been your favorite game series of all time. And that’s a choice you’ll have to make. If you want to learn the game I can help you. You don’t have to master everything to start having fun, but you do need to have a basic sense of what you’re doing and you do need to have the basic moves it down for a specific weapon.

There are two tutorial quests that are absolutely required and you should not skip. When you say you couldn’t understand anything about the game I’m wondering if you play these tutorials because they teach you how to attack and they teach you the wire bug moves. Obviously they don’t teach you everything, not even close, but they do give you a little information to get started.

Speaking of which, there are 14 different weapon types and all of them feel different. Some are fast and some are slow. You get a COMPLETELY different experience with each weapon. So you want to try out different weapons and see what gels with you. You also have to understand this is a game about animation commitments. Every single button you press and every single move you do requires an animation to play out. You should never press a single button without knowing exactly what it’s going to do and exactly how long it’s going to take for the animation to play out, and until you know that it’s going to feel “sluggish” because you’re not used to it and you don’t know what you’re doing. Once you know what you’re doing though your brain knows what to expect when you press a button and it just feels right.

Once you know what you’re doing, THIS is what the game is like (skip to 45 seconds for beginning of combat)

Monster Hunter Rise amiibo back in stock at GameStop. Individual shipping sucks, but they’re exclusive, so it’s the only way to get them. $86 shipped for all 3. Use filter to get 3rd to show. Bug in the search results.

Something I realized, I didn't play the demo all that much (it is just a demo, I don't usually play those for long, lol), but I've noticed that the turf wars aren't in this. Kinda bugs me since they said they're also revamping this for Rise, was hoping to learn more about this. Ah well. TwT

I haven't played a Monster Hunter game since the one on PSP. I had a lot of fun with the Rise demo. I'll want to play it a bit more, try out the other characters - but it looks like this may be a purchase for me.

Why not? There’s nothing wrong with the controls. They are precision-based and every single frame of animation is meticulously designed. Everything is intentional. I can’t think of a single complaint with the controls, except to say that games with depth require learning. But you get out what you put in. Reason the game is so great is because there’s so much depth to learn, and a lot of that lies in learning the controls properly.

The controls feel so unbelievably amazing once you know your weapon like the back of your hand. Every button press is immediately realized with a gorgeous animation, where your skill depends on learning the timing of the animations and how to string them together. The combat is the best of any game I’ve ever played, and part of that is due to the excellent controls.

Perhaps in games past one could criticize some of the rigidity of movement, but all that’s been smoothed out in World and Rise to the point of absolute perfection. And now with gyro also assisting in aiming? I can confidently say the controls are the best of any game I’ve played. And there’s always people who just “don’t get it”, usually because they’re not used to the animation commitments, but that goes away as they play more and adjust. They find it’s not the game that’s the issue, it’s their lack of skill and misplaced expectations of how things work due to bias from experiences with other, different styled games.

When I can consistently dodge roll through Deviljho dragon breath using only 6 i-frames and not get hit, it’s safe to say the controls have been refined to blissful perfection.

@dan958
Lot of changes since the PSP games. You missed the underwater of 3rd Gen and the verticality of 4th, the styles of MHGU and the slinger and scout flies of World, and you’ve missed a lot of new weapons that have been added since, and complete weapon overhauls.

I really recommend Switch Axe (added in 3rd Gen), Charge Blade (added in 4th gen) and Hunting Horn (overhauled in Rise). Imo, these are the 3 most satisfying weapons to use. And all 3 have amazing offensive wirebug attacks that close distance between you and the monster, and give super armor during the attack, so you can go right through roars.

Fair enough. I know it’s not for everyone, but I’m talking more about objective response time in the design. Very few games can I successfully dodge with so few i-frames consistently, and pull off amazing combos with proper timing. There is a bias offset between the press and the animation completing (by design), but the bias offset between the press and the start of the animation, as well as the repeatability and reproducibility as measured uncertainty (or error, if you will) of actions in-game is virtually zero, with robust, satisfying and rewarding animations. Even the hit lag is fantastic to really drive home the impact of your attacks. That said, I’m just glad to hear you enjoy the game.

I also think DKC Tropical Freeze and Ori Will of the Wisps are top tier for controls, but they are different types of games. I’ve played enough games like Assassins Creed and Immortals Fenyx Rising and the like, games I genuinely do love but that don’t have the best controls, to the extent that when I play a game where they’re so finally tuned, it really stands out.

Managed to kill all 3 monsters in the Mizutsune intermediate quest in 42 minutes, and that's with collecting spirit birds for 5 min at the start and carving all 3 monsters.

That's not bad considering it took me 40 minutes just to kill Mizutsune the first time I hunted him. I can tell the reflexes and skills are starting to come back.

Lol. It’ll come back to you. That’s why the demo is so nice though. It’s a perfect opportunity to sharpen up your skills before the game releases in March. One of the things I dislike about jumping into a new MH game, is trying to wrap my head around all the intricacies of combat again. Usually I have to watch a weapon tutorial to remember how to do certain moves, and it slows the pace of the early game as I come to grips with the mechanics again.

With the demo, because it’s so good and so fun, and the weapons so smooth, I can’t help but want to keep playing it. And it’s allowed me to get back in my groove well before the game releases. It’ll be nice to hit the ground running come March 26.

Can’t wait for this game! I always play great sword and hunting horn, but I’ll try this time to add another weapon to the repertoire.

Played the demo recently. This is my first MH game and it felt really great. At first I had no idea what to do. I spent some time with dual blades and sword/shield and managed to beat Arzuros and Great Izuchi. One of the best gaming moments I recently had. I can tell that this is must buy for me Extremely excited about this game

The new Hunting Horn is amazing, but I also recommend Charge Blade and Switch Axe. Those weapons are so, sooo satisfying to use

@liresn
Welcome to your new addiction 😁

I remember when I first played Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. Was completely clueless at first. But after my first real hunt online against a Royal Ludroth, it was like scales falling from my eyes. Suddenly I saw the game in a brand new light. Was the most fun experience I’d ever had. Those are good starter weapons, as is Long Sword and Hunting Horn.

I'm already 2 years too late in playing Monster Hunter World on PC but I'm loving that game so far. Even though I still have much to learn in that game it's made me excited for Monster Hunter Rise coming in two months.

Never too late to play Monster Hunter 😉 World is so good, isn’t it?

Don’t get me wrong, I love the older titles, especially MHGU, but World is absolutely incredible. It was a much needed forward step for the series. And it deserves its proper due. If it wasn’t for World pushing the series forward with open maps and QoL features expected from modern games,, we wouldn’t be getting Rise in its current form. Rise is so great because of what World did for the series before it. I’ve put over 20 hours into the demo already, which is a lot for a single map and the same 5 monsters over and over. I’m considering going back to World on PC until Rise releases. I played through the entire game on PS4 but recently switched to PC gaming instead, and thus had to start a new playthrough. Up to high rank already.

28 Minutes 3 seconds is my new time for beating ALL THREE MONSTERS. First Great Izuchi, then Rathian, then Mizutsune. And that’s with a 3 minute spirit bird gathering detour at the start of the quest. So it’s more like 8 min for Izuchi, 10 min for Rathian, 10 min for Mizutsune, including all travel time in between.

That’s the best I’ve ever done. Proud of that.

Lol ok, every Monster Hunter fan needs to watch this video. Just trust me, and watch it to the end. I was laughing so hard around the 7 minute and change mark and the 9 minute and change mark.

It’s so good though. It’s 11 minutes and it’ll probably be the best 11 minutes of your day 😁

Hmm played the Demo of Rise and i didn't like it.
Played 3 and 4 ultimate really much and World also like 100 hours.
But i feel they implement Stuff in this one in the Sake of putting something in.
I also disliked those super Fancy Combos that where in the prerior Iteration.
It is too over the top for me and overloads the Game.
It is now too "japanese" for me.
Graphic Wise it is good, but it misses somehow the Monster Hunter Flair.

I laughed so hard seeing him carry the egg through the mountain tunnel shortcut, only to discover they couldnt fit through the opening at the end with the egg in their hands lol.

And that great sword triple charge from the top of the mountain was absolutely sick.
