At least once per quest? What's your defense at? If it's 400-450 then it may just come down to playing a bit more defensively and leveraging skills that increase evasion and survivability. But if it's sub-400 then ya, you need to increase defense.

But they're not mutually exclusive. You can make a mixed set that also has solid defense at the same time.

Also be sure to have the Power Charm, Power Talon, Armor Charm and Armor Talon in your item pouch at all times. And if your weapon has the option to ramp up with defense, maybe do that too.

@Snatcher
You buy a power charm and armor charm from the market. Then you buy an extra of each because you'll be crafting them into a Power Talon and Armor Talon by mixing with an Ibusbi Claw.

Just go to your item box, craft, and at the end of the list you'll see the option to craft a Power Talon and Armor Talon. The reason you want to have two of each, is because they stack. So you put the Power Charm, Power Talon, Armor Charm and Armor Talon into your item pouch sets and always carry them with you.

By having all 4 you'll gain a considerable amount of attack and defense.

Re-watching some of my Rise videos for absolutely no reason, and I think I noticed something that I did accidentally with my gunlance. Might play this game again for a little bit just to test out something now, or maybe I'm going crazy, I dunno. lol

I've never played a Monster Hunter game before. I'm interested in getting this but still have some questions:

1) How difficult is this game? Personally I like challenging games like Dark Souls. I've heard that this game was much easier than other MH games at launch, did they fix the difficulty with updates?

2) Is this worth getting if I only play in single player mode?

chipia

Joeynator3000

@chipia
I can't say much about difficulty, because the monsters were putting up a better fight than in World, but everyone says the monsters here are the easiest...? shrugs

The series in general is never super hard or anything and most of that stuff comes from the end of the game, or last content updates. Rise is already reaching that point since some of the last quests (and even final boss) were kicking my butt. Rise is nowhere near done with the updates, too, then we got the expansion next year and all of its updates. xD

As for single player, I usually solo everything and you can definitely do that here.

@chipia As far as difficulty goes, this is pretty easy but does offer some challenges in the later game. Even though Rise is pretty easy for a MH game, I think as a newcomer you will still find it challenging and very enjoyable. There is a demo as well so check that out. It's 100% enjoyable solo.

@chipia
If you’re looking for Dark Souls tier difficulty, Monster Hunter is the wrong franchise. You don’t get punished with death for a single mistake like in Souls games. MH has never been that kind of game. It’s more like 12 rounds in a boxing match. The highest difficulty comes from learning the mechanics. Granted, you will reach that level of difficulty for the final few hunts in an Ultimate edition game that includes Master Rank. It has “challenging but not overbearing” difficulty. But if you’re a diehard who is just looking for games that provide the uttermost difficulty outside of the norm, then this is absolutely not a franchise for you. On a spectrum of 0 -100, if Dark Souls is a 100, I’d say MH falls around a 65 for the base game and 80 for the Ultimate Edition with Master Rank, and 90 for the final end game quests in Master Rank.

If, however, you are looking for a great video game to play and it doesn’t necessarily have to offer 100/100 difficulty to enjoy it, then absolutely jump in. The Low Rank Quests are easier than previous games, but they were always easy to begin with, so it’s not like you would’ve been challenged to the limit regardless. But the high rank quests are on par with pretty much every other game in the series. There was nothing to “fix” with updates. Low rank quests were intentionally made easier to help newcomers get into the franchise without being off put by the difficulty, which has happened on numerous occasions with previous entries. And that’s not something they’re looking to change or fix. They have, however, added progressively more difficult quests with updates which is how they always do it. And once the ultimate edition expansion releases, we will get the highest tier of difficulty at that time. Some people might think it’s a little easier overall (not counting low rank which is objectively easier for newcomers sake), some people don’t, and some people actually find it a little bit more difficult, but overall it’s generally in the same ballpark as previous games, so even if you’ve heard it’s easier, it’s not a drastic difference.

Solo is how most people play. MH is a game designed first and foremost for solo play. This is not a multiplayer game that hamfists solo play into it. This is a single player game just so happens to be as fun (if not more fun) with others. The one aspect for which I would say solo play is not preferable, is for rampage quests (the tower defense quests). You can do them solo and many people have, but because there are so many monsters it’s not ideal because all of their aggro gets focused on you. Thankfully there’s only like two quests in the game you’re forced to do that are rampage quests, so if you end up not liking them solo it’s not a big deal.

My brother is a Souls fanatic who has beaten Bloodborne 3 times, Dark Souls twice, Dark Souls 2, Dark Souls 3, Demons Souls, Nioh, Nioh 2, etc. and yet, he now likes MH more than he likes Souls games. But you have to commit to learn the mechanics and there are a lot of them. Most new players don’t understand the Hook of the game and they don’t understand why combat is so addictive for others. But if you stick with it you’ll reach a point where it clicks, and once that happens, say goodbye to your free time.

@Joeynator3000 I kind of disagree there. The first game in the series is dubbed unplayable by some people with dos making some improvements that made the game more approachable. I personally think the series started to get easier from 4 and on.

Rise and World in particular started gutting difficult aspects of the game completely with the addition of camps and the ability to restock on items mid hunt. And that right there, @chipia , is where Dark Souls stomps Monster Hunter in challenging the player, for in DS, you have limited resources and harsh aftermaths from making the wrong decisions. Meanwhile, almost every weapon in Monster Hunter now has some sort of counter, insta evade, or super armor to make any average joe able to almost completely disregard positioning in a monster hunter battle.

That being said though, the game is not a walk in a park and I think you will get more out of it if you go at it solo. So in your case, single player is not only good, but recommended.

Have I played way too much GU or is Valstrax just ridiculously easy? Like, it hits reasonably hard, but not as hard as some things and you'd have to be drunk to actually get hit by it.

Got two gems in my first clear, tho. I'll take it.

I probably have one of the only Nintendo accounts in the world to be able to redownload both the software called 'Sega Mega Drive Classics' and the software called "Sega Ages: Lightening Force."

If you send me a friend request, please @ me so I know who you are. Cheers!

@Joeynator3000 @MisterMan @JaxonH @Mansa Thank you all for your informative answers! I didn't know there was going to be an Ultimate Edition. I think I should get this game but I will probably wait for the Ultimate Edition to get the best experience and most challenge.

Yup. All MH games get an ultimate edition.

But it's gonna be about 2 years away. Us MH fans can't wait that long.
