@Mr-Fuggles777 ah. That's understandable.

@JaxonH but can you use your wireless headset while playing on Switch? No you need to use external apps because it's lacking in basic features.
By your definition my Mobile phone is also a games console as that also has dedicated games for it.
My battery analysis wasn't an error, 1 hunt took just under 20% battery - and looking around other forums it would seem this is pretty common. The V1 switches are even worse than my Lite by some accounts

Yeah, World's maps were too large for me, and a lot of them were overly complex, can't tell you how many times I got lost in that stupid tree in the Ancient Forest...or the Coral Highlands in general. Rise's maps are smaller, but also more straightforward. At the same time they have so much stuff crammed in there when you're not in the main areas, was kinda surprised how much new stuff the Sandy Plains had. lol

Flooded Forest is so good. They did this map JUSTICE. Brings back so many memories. In MH3U I remember needing Machilite Ore and getting some in Flooded Forest. And the exact same thing happened in Rise. Wow. I'm just blown away by this game. The more I play the more in love I am.

Just knowing I have this the rest of my life to play, and no matter what happens nobody can ever take it away- I can scour these maps wherever I want, whenever I want, especially at work... it's a dream come true. This is even beyond what I imagined a new MH ground up for Switch would be like. And we still have the ultimate edition to look forward to and gobs of DLC? Shut it down. Nintendo may as well take holiday for the rest of the year because I won't need anything else.

@Mr-Fuggles777
Ya. Arctis 9 connects to Switch wirelessly and also connects to phone over Bluetooth for Discord.

It's amazing.

You can opt for a cheaper option, the Arctis 3 with Bluetooth, and it also mixes audio, but requires connecting via the headphone jack. Not a huge deal but I'm a wireless kinda guy.

We’re all aware the system doesn’t have voice chat. What I’m trying to say is it doesn’t really matter because A most people don’t use it 99% of the time anyways, and B you don’t need it because there are other ways to do it. Doesn’t matter if it’s the system doing it or not, what matters is that you can do it. I don’t care if it’s the system or a genie in a bottle, Long as I can voice chat when I play I don’t really care how it’s being done.

BTW, I now have official, confirmed battery life data, from a 100% charge to 0% playing straight through on v2 Switch with max brightness, max volume and wifi. Started at 7:14pm and the Switch died at 11:43 pm, so 4 hrs 29 min (so basically 4.5 hrs). Little lower than my initial estimate, but a good 15 min longer than many other AAA games on the system. So ya, battery life is normal and in line with other games.

@Joeynator3000
Indeed. I enjoy World's maps. They're cool to behold. A marvel, at least visually if nothing else. But traversing them just wasn't as fun as the maps in Rise. There's so much vertically, nooks and crannies everywhere. It's the best maps we've ever had.

@JaxonH I've got the Xbox Wireless Headset on order, I didn't know that you could connect wireless headsets so that's good news.

The V2 has better battery than the Lite so of course you will get more between charges. Although 4.5 hours still isn't great, I used to play world for 7 or 8 hours a night.

@Mr-Fuggles777
It’s a portable system, and battery technology has its limits. I had a 48 hour binge in MH3U. That doesn’t mean I expect to be able to do that in handheld on a single charge. I can still binge as long as I want on the TV just like I did in that game and just like I did in World. But 4 1/2 hours is a long ass time to play on the go. My entire workday is only 8 hours. I could literally play for half my shift without getting any work done and still not have depleted the battery (and even if I did I can just plug it in). But yeah, the Lite has less battery life- that’s one of the compromises you make for a $199 pocket friendly system. But it’ll still be in line with other games on the Lite.

As for the headsets, you can use them on Switch. It doesn’t have Bluetooth support for them out of the box, but everyone knows Bluetooth for headset audio is garbage and should never be used anyways. The lag completely ruins it. It’s fine for chatting on Discord but not for game audio. You’ll have a quarter to half second delay on everything- even the newer low latency BT specs still have lag. Xbox is different because it has built-in proprietary wireless for headsets. So you can actually buy headsets without needing a dongle, but most headsets come with a Wifi dongle. The Arctis 9 wireless is the perfect Switch headset. And I use Arctis 1 wireless for PC/PS5. Granted I don’t voice chat often. So most of the time it’s just for audio. But it does have the capability if needed. When I play with my brother in MH, we voice chat. So we each bought the Arctis 9 Wireless.

@JaxonH I tend to prefer multiplayer games as I have a short attention span and get bored playing solo after a while. In the 100's of hours playing World I probably completed about 10 hunts solo.

Ok, I ate my first village meal.... That cutscene has got to be the most japanese thing I have ever seen. And I've watched some crazy japanese stuff.

Dual blades feel really refined for the first time in this game... I wanted to love them in 3g but never quite could. Only doing azuros and izu and lagombi for now, but I'm shredding them relatively fast. Ig took longer. I like that for the first time. but I still have difficulty lining up those aerial strikes. One thing this time that might really cripple if it's it's wurebug attacks seem really hard to line up making it an unreliable feature. I can see if becoming a "challenge weapon" because of its hard to use wire attacks.

@Mr-Fuggles777 I tend to forget there's a v2 switch. I'm using launch day switches, and the battery varies by game. Arms, splatoon, acnh I could get a good 3 hours or more. Other games are half that. Better than launch 3ds I guess.

@JaxonH you win the nerdiest quote of the internet 2021 award right there. Geoff will give you a trophy. Presented by reggie.

@JaxonH Totally agree about it vs world. World received a lot of hype for its visuals and qol modernization, and rightfully so, to a point, though the engine was trash with terrible performance, but the game itself never felt right. Environments were too big and empty and took forever to traverse. The town was a mess if tangled catwalks with to much travel time between points, a mess of a hall, and no sense of place in the town at all. I didn't enjoy a moment in that mess if a town. The fact that you couldn't even skip that like 10 minute intro cutscene was indicative of the annoying oversights. You were right at the time, mhgu was more enjoyable overall... But... The wild modernization was sorely missed and the old annoyances were frustrating. Rise finally takes the sense of place and cohesion of the past, cranks to to 11, has the best, just cohesive, alive, and immersive world yet, and marries it to virtually all the qol modernization of world. All the world strengths, none of the world weaknesses. I'm only an intermittent casual mg fan, but I've dabbled since psp.... This is easily the first iteration of the series that doesn't feel like a prototype for a future game. It feels like the destination. Maybe world 2 will amaze in all new ways, but I feel like this one might just be the magic "accidental perfection" that chrono trigger was, and even the same creators could never reproduce this magic. I've always liked my bit this is the first time I'm flat out addicted. (I really have to break away and finish the fenyx dlc and ffxv where I'm up to the boat...)

@JaxonH Do you think there's a difference of audio quality between the Arctis 9 and the Arctis 3? I'm thinking about getting one or the other to use with a Switch and Discord on a PC, along with using it with singleplayer games on a PS4 at other times. Are there any other notable differences or things I should know before deciding which Arctis model to buy?

@theepictorkoal
Yes, I’d be glad to answer your questions.

So, the Arctis 9 wireless (not Arctis 9X wireless which is Xbox only) is $200. The dongle is USB-A, with a hardwired cord that leads to a round device at the end with a switch on the back (The instructions say to use PS4 mode for NSW/PS4 and PC mode for PC, but I’ve found NSW only works in PC mode). This is convenient for the switch because you can plug into a USB a port on the side of the dock. It’s not convenient for PS5, which only has USB-C on the front. You could run an extension from a USB a port in the back, or buy a $3 USB-C male to USB-A female adapter. It’s convenient with PC because PCs have USB-A ports. It’s not good for Switch handheld at all. I leave it permanently connected to my Switch dock, with the device sitting on my tv stand, and just toggle the switch whenever I use the headset (otherwise you won’t hear sound coming out of the TV if you leave it permanently in PC mode). It’s also super confortable and has a built in extendable mic.

The Arctis 3 with Bluetooth is $100, but requires connecting to Switch via headphone jack. This works great for handheld mode, but you have to run a 5 or 6 foot extension cord from the dock when playing on the TV. For PC you can just connect wirelessly via Bluetooth but I don’t recommend it. BT sucks for lag and should only be used for separate discord chat. So this is kind of a Switch-focused headset. The audio quality is perhaps not quite as good but it’s really close, like, really close. It’s also incredibly comfortable. However, I have a smaller head and the Velcro couldn’t close as tight as I needed it too so I sewed on a bit of extra Velcro so it had a wider range of size fitting. Probably won’t be an issue for most people, and even for me it seemed to fit pretty well if I got it as tight as it would go right on the edge of the Velcro, but it’s worth noting. It also has an extendable mic.

Then there is the Arctis 1 Wireless, which is $100. It does not feature Bluetooth to connect to your phone and mix the chat audio. So this headset is explicitly for audio only on Switch. However, it has a tiny USB-C dongle which can easily be used in handheld mode (or docked if you use a simple 6 inch USB-A to USB-C extension out the back of the dock USB port), can easily be used on PS5 with its front USB-C port WITH CHAT since it doesn’t need discord, and can easily be used on PC- again, with chat since you don’t need your phone with separate Discord. The mic is detachable, and since I just use it for audio only on switch given it doesn’t have Bluetooth, I just leave the mic detached.

All 3 do something well but none do everything.

Instead of paying $200 for the Arctis 9 and being constrained to docked Switch (though fully wireless with Bluetooth for phone discord chat which is incredible), you could buy both the Arctis 3 with Bluetooth and Arctis 1 Wireless. The Arctis 1 would cover you for wireless audio on Switch, both docked and undocked, and wireless audio with chat on PS5 and PC. And the Arctis 3 would cover you for chatting on Switch either docked or handheld, that would require plugging into the headphone jack.

Or, if you want the full experience, get all 3 lol. That’s what I did. Ya, it’s $400. But it covers every possible situation you could ever need on any console. And because you’d have multiples you’d have options for which one you want to wear when you’re just listening to audio which is nice because you might find one more comfy than another (I must say they are all insanely comfortable).

Then again, Arctis 3 Wireless does everything you need it to. Chat on your PS4, PS5, PC, Switch, handheld Switch, and all for $100... you just have to be OK with the fact you’re going to have a cord plugging into the headphone jack.

I don’t know how I have never played a monster hunter game. This is my first monster hunter game, but I’m already sucked in haha. Now I want to go and by world for my PlayStation, a game series I never knew about, because I’m just sucked in now. There’s to many good things I can say about this game, in only 2 days so far. So many of the monsters have already clicked inside my brain, and are now my favorites (Khezu and tetronodon). Long story short, I’m just sucked into the series now, and can’t wait for the update in April!

Hi

Mr-Fuggles777

@Slinkoy1 MH world I usually about £15 on the PlayStation store, but if you hold off it will more than likely be in the spring sale (or might be already, I havnt been on my PlayStation for while). Its definitely worth getting, but if you have Rise I would focus on that for now - the grinding between the two games could get a little heavy.

The pro controller finally arrived. But I currently have no switch dock to use it with until the limited edition console comes. Ah well

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

@JaxonH Thanks for the detailed response! I think I'll be sticking with the Arctis 3 Wireless as, like you said, it does everything I want it to do. I've almost never play the Switch docked as the TVs in my home are usually occupied. As for the PS4, and PS5 hopefully in the future, I'd just be using the Arctis 3 when I'm playing singleplayer games but there's always a chance I'd use the bluetooth connection for chatting over Discord at the same time. Apparently I have a larger head so perhaps the velcro issue you ran into won't apply, regardless thanks for a workaround solution.

Thanks also for explaining why the bluetooth connection should be used for chatting over game audio. I'm getting this headset mainly for Monster Hunter Rise as normally I mute game audio to just focus on chatting, but in this case I feel like I need to hear both for a better multiplayer experience.
