Having a pretty good time with this. My previous experience started with Monster Hunter World, which is one of my favourite games of last gen. I think my main let down so far is the environment and level design. I love zipping around with the wirebug but the levels all sort of look/feel pretty similar to me. I haven't got to a new zone and thought 'wow' yet like I did with pretty much every zone in World. The combat is definitely a lot more fun though. Having a blast playing sword and shield here. I mained great sword and bow in World but I'm trying to go with something different here.

One of the awesome/annoying things about Monster Hunter is that each weapon is so great in its own right, that no matter which one you choose, you always have this sense that you're missing out by not having picked a different one, and each weapon is so distinctive with its own quirks and learning curve that it's a tall order to try to become proficient on multiple weapon types.

@JaxonH Oh I almost forgot, is there a specific version of the Arctis 3 Wireless that I should get? I do recall you mentioning that there was a certain variant that worked better than the others.

Key Menu Settings All Hunters Should Be Aware Of

I would also add, for the Gyroscope menu...

Gyro Functionality: ON
Right Analog Up/Down: ON
Normal Gyro: OFF
Gyro Aiming: ON

For Arctis 3 Wireless with Bluetooth, just make sure it’s the 2019 edition or later.

@Ralizah
So, what are your thoughts so far? Not sure how much you’ve progressed. But I’m on 3 star quests and am completely floored. I think I love the two 3rd Gen maps the most. Sandy Plains and Flooded Forest. They’re all good maps. None of them are anything less than amazing. But those two really stand out. Perhaps nostalgia is playing a part as well since those were maps I played in my very first MH game, but I don’t feel like that’s influencing my opinion of them. They’re just genuinely gorgeous, well-designed maps that I thoroughly love exploring. These are the best maps of any monster hunter game I’ve ever played. I think part of that is the tools we’re given to explore. The wirebug and palamute completely changes the game and how areas are explored. Verticality is finally truly viable.

I just discovered that there are at least three base camps in each map, possibly more. And I’m already finding so many hidden scrolls. I think I’ve got at least half of them in Shrine Ruins. And at least 3 each in the other maps. I also love finding hidden tunnels and great wire bugs that launch you to a hidden area... this game is just expertly designed in every single respect.

@JaxonH Yeah, I got scrolls as a reward for one of the first side-quests. What's up with those?

I haven't had much time to play since release, so I'm still tackling the 2-Star missions, but I like it a lot so far. There's a lot of stuff to find out in the field, and I particularly like how pictures you take will be displayed next to the entry for a plant or monster. Who needs Pokemon Snap?

Admittedly, I haven't played MH since Generations many moons ago, so it's all kind of overwhelming again, but the good thing about this series is that you can kinda take things as slow as you need to.

I'm having a hard time remembering that I can use a wirebug to save myself when a monster throws me, though. The wirebug adds a lot to the game, but the controls aren't as intuitive as I'd like.

I'm maining the Hunting Horn right now. It's like a hammer that rewards me with buffs for clobbering the enemy.

The game is cute, too. I love the little song and dance when the girl cooks a dango meal for you. I've heard World is kind of self-serious, so it's nice to see this still retains the goofiness I enjoyed in 4 Ultimate.

edit: Also, forgot to mention I way bumped down the frequency with which my hunter talks to herself. It was getting annoying. Reminded me of a Playstation exclusive where half the game is your character walking around jabbering to himself.

On the voice acting front, I kinda regret not going with Japanese audio now. The english isn't terrible or anything, but it kinda sticks out considering the heavily Japanese-inspired setting of the game.

Ugh, I said I'd be using the Hunting Horn in this game, I haven't touched that or the Gunlance at all here. lol

Literally all I can think about now is that stupid dango song from Clannad. lol

Help. I don't want this trapped in my head.

@Ralizah
I’m using hunting horn too! It felt appropriate given the fact they overhauled it and, in MH3U, I used Hunting Horn (and Long Sword) so it feels like coming back home in a way. Though I am crafting Switch Axes and Charge Blades also, as I intend to bounce between all three weapons for this game.

As for wirebug, it’ll feel incredible once you get the muscle memory down. This is why I put 40 hours into the demo so that I could get good with the wire bug before the game came out. It basically just took doing one full 50 minute quest where I did nothing else except practice the wirebug. Run up walls, practice the wirefall on monsters, traverse all over the map, learning to wiredash, jump, wiredash, jump (you get a free jump midair after a wire dash). The wirefall technique should be top priority though. Even if you have to actively and consciously tell yourself, “ok, get ready to hit ZL+B the moment I’m hit”, and then just practice doing it until it starts becoming a habit. It honestly didn’t take me that long but once I got that down… Oh my gosh. Game changer. Legitimately.

Btw, I think you can change the language at any point. But it has to be done from the main menu. I love the talking. It makes the hunter feel more like a real person. But I did hand pick a voice and personality that I liked when setting up my character. When he goes fishing sometimes he’ll say things like, “man, these are weird...” it just sounds so natural. Or when he gathers he’ll say “good”, but he kind of strings out the vowels of it so that it reminds me of the emperor in Star Wars saying “goood.... GOOOOD....” lol. Every single time he says it I say that to myself in the emperor’s voice 🤣

The scrolls are just hidden collectibles found in every map. I think there’s 10 of them to find per map. You can trade them in to Kagero for special items and stuff.

Few tips. Make sure to make an item loadout in your item box so you don’t have to manually restock before each quest. Also make an equipment loadout for you, your canyne and your felyne. You also have to manually assign unlocked palico and Palamute skills at the buddy board.

edit
And since you never played World, it’s worth assigning items how you want in the radial menu. Radial menu is so useful it’s hard to imagine not having it now. Also, I LOVE the camera. I’m a diehard screenshot fanatic so this mechanic feels like the best possible inclusion they could’ve made. I especially like how you can hang your own pictures in your room.

I'm almost done with 4 star quests at the moment, so I've only done 1 rampage mission, which I really really didn't like. How critical are the rampage missions for progression for the rest of the game? Hoping they're pretty optional.

The camera can be accessed from the action bar, which by default can be toggled via Dpad left and right, and activated with Dpad up.

I haven't played a Rampage Quest yet but I've watched plenty of footage and it looks like a massive improvement over the siege Quests of older entries. Which, if you poll random World players, they'll all say they hated the Zorah Magdaros quests. It's pretty universal that siege quests were always the weakest link and needed an overhaul (though Jhen Moran and Gogmazios were pretty good I must say). This seems so much more fun by comparison. Certainly can't be worse than what we had before.

Okay, I beat the game's flagship and made it to the credits, game's over...time to trade it in and play something else.

...Of course I'm joking, I'm not stupid...plus I got the digital version anyways. lol

Anyways yeah, I'll admit Magnamalo was a fun one.

@Joeynator3000 If I'm not mistaken, the flagship monster isn't the final quest, or shouldn't be. There's always a final boss type monster way later.

VoidofLight

I have a question. Are there more than 4 maps as of now? Or just the four.

"It is fate. Many have tried, yet none have ever managed to escape it's flow."

Joeynator3000

@VoidofLight It was a joke, there's still another group of low rank quests to deal with. Then you gotta deal with high rank. As for maps, there's five. Shrine Ruins, Frost Islands, Flooded Forest, Sandy Plains, and Lava Caverns.

We'll eventually get a new map once the expansion hits next year. (also guessing we'll get a new map similar to the Everwood from 4U or whatever Iceborne had, can't remember, never got that far. xD)

@Joeynator3000 Ah alright! I'm guessing the maps are big enough to not get boring, but small enough to not be as confusing as world.

Joeynator3000

If anything, the Lava Caverns is almost World-like in terms of size. But yeah it's not a maze or anything, they all still have plenty of stuff and secrets all over the place, though.

@Joeynator3000 Oh nice. I honestly can't wait to get into it. Just only a little bit more to go of Bravely Default II, and I'll probably be able to play.

Anyways yeah, taking a break for a little bit (and uploading my videos since I'm recording hunts, lol)...probably gonna watch a movie and do hub quest stuff. Also need to unlock a couple of things like sub-camps since some maps have two of those. Actually I think the only one I need is in the Plains. >.>

Yeah, like others said, I really never loved world. It was so dry, serious, didn't feel like mh, and the town was terrible. I loved the gameplay improvements though. Rise is just perfect with the right feel, but all the improvements.

Man, all the weapons feel better in this game. I'm struggling with bow... Have to try hbg again too. I can't fully adapt to glaive. I'm familiar with all the classes from past games, I've played them all. But they all feel new again here!

@ralizah. Playing japanese games always gets me hungry. How can such a slender people have such an obsession with food?
