@Haru17 Nope, Skyward Sword was a terrible Zelda game in so, many, many, many ways. It's the only Zelda game I don't like. I was so disappointed, bought the Collector's Edition and all. I was actually glad when it was all over. BOTW was like the polar opposite. A true renaissance.
Eh, any outlet that named BOTW the greatest game of all time is going to have a healthy amount of my skepticism when reading their exclusive Odyssey review.
Of course, the game will be great, but I also suspect points will be added because it's Mario, similar to how I feel about BOTW and how many feel about SS's review scores.
I agree with pretty much all of this. I'm less particular about Mario though, so I don't think I'll mind Odyssey as much.
@Spoony_Tech I know, it's just funny that they would be swayed by the Zelda brand to the point that they're giving Skyward Sword a 10/10 given their 'prestigious' reputation. It's a good game, but it's easily the 3D Zelda with the most damaging flaws.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE Everyone gave it a 10. I think everyone succumbed to the hype, and then later everyone decided it was terrible. I personally don't hate it. It isn't my favorite Zelda game, but it definitely isn't a 10/10.

@Nicolai And those are all excellent points! But like you said, it's not so much the controls are bad, but rather they weren't utilized properly. Which I totally agree. I've played Sunshine a lot, and once I got used to the controls, no game has gotten close for me, although I'd have to give galaxy big kudos for that spin jump. And by no means do I think the 64 wall jump is bad, I just can't really get used to it, especially the way Mario kind of flips and suddenly gains momentum. Idk why, it looks and feels weird to me.

I haven't read the thread but I am guessing Skyward Sword has been mentioned to try to discredit Edge's 10/10 choices? It usually pops it's head up when they give a 10.

@GrailUK Skyward sword was a very good game though. Zelda cycle victim.

@Ryu_Niiyama Oh I agree, however this site has it's share of nay-sayers and that game usually gets thrown around because motion controls are so contentious. I can't bloody wait for the 27th

Any outlet that doesn't name a single Super Mario Bros title in their greatest 100 games of all time list is going to receive a healthy amount of my skepticism too...
Oh, were you talking about EDGE? ..me too! I have half a suspicion that they don't actually play video games and instead just...guess.
Odyssey will be great - I'm sure of that...just, not because EDGE said so.
Skyward Sword was an amazing game. So was Breath of the Wild. 9/10... 10/10... what does it matter. The games are both incredible. And it's not me, and not just one review site... that thinks so. Considering Zelda BotW got more perfect scores then any other game in history, there comes a point where you have to face the facts that you are the outlier. That the majority of people love it and they are not "biased" or "adding points".
Odyssey is going to be epic. And no, not just because Edge said so, but Edge saying so is certainly evidence of the fact. They've only given 20 perfect scores in 21 years. And their scores have never really been different than the vast majority of other reviewers. So ya.
Another return to greatness with Zelda Mario combo of two perfect 10/10 games. We saw it with Zelda Link to the Past and Super Mario World. We saw it with Zelda Ocarina of Time and Mario 64. But never in the same year. Wow... what a time to be a Nintendo gamer.

I think games do often given people temporary completion highs as well though. Which affects review scores.
Also there are definitely social pressures and fashions that affect reviewers. Like how the hell did Dark Souls 2 get such high review scores? It's clearly not down to the quality of the game. Almost no-one today would say that's a 9/10 game. My suspicion is that games journos felt annoyed that they'd been left out of such a massive new trend as Dark Souls really became popular from the grassroots community rather than any kind of top down influencing. So they subconsciously wanted to feel like they were part of that influence. Just a hypothesis.
@GrailUK The motion controls in Skyward Sword were one of the very few redeeming features of the game. Though the infinite Wii remote recalibration got very annoying, fast. It looked nice too but after that I struggle to find a positive thing to say about it.
Besides Mario Kart, 'The Zelda cycle' is a meme, it doesn't explain different games or how people enjoy them. Skyward Sword's problem was that it's dungeon-ish overworld was so slow to get through, making the whole game the same thing without any external towns or real overworld areas besides the empty sky that felt unfinished. And that it's story was the exact same tropey damsel junk that Ocarina of Time subverted in 1998 and which Breath of the Wild retreaded yet again this year.
But that's besides the point, pointing out other things Edge gave a 10/10 to is only to prove the arbitrary nature of a large number score and dispel whatever myth of prestige they have for giving less high scores. Odyssey looks like it will be great, it probably will be given that there is no expectation of story or nuanced level design as there is in Zelda.
@The64Master You're gonna make me leave the thread man, dear me!
At least I got to witness @Dezzy 's Zelda cycle. Ha ha, that's a good one!
