@CanisWolfred It reminded me of a weird mix of Mario is Missing and Sonic '06 at first. Not a good sign...

Can we all agree that New Donk City is a stupid name?

You guys realise it's named after DONKey Kong. Most of the street names are Kong family names and a lot of signs have them as well.

Wait, people are actually down on this game? It looks fantastic.

I'm super pumped for it, honestly. This and BoTW were the two best games in the whole presentation. Besides, for those who don't like the city stage, it's just one world. Who knows how many worlds there will be. There could be dozens.

@Octane Pff I think New York City sounds stupid. New Amsterdam sounded much better

Was I surprised by the city and real life humans? YES. But THAT's exactly why I love it.

Really got an Alice in wonderland feel while watching the trailer, what with the hats, white rabbits and travelling from the real world into fantasy realms.

Let's not judge the whole game's style by just one stage...

I was basing it on two stages, actually...the Jungle stage gave me some Sonic Adventure vibes, as well...

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, either, FYI. I'm just saying.

...I guess I've been such a hardcore Sonic fan that I occasionally forget most people don't like Sonic Adventure.

It is amazing how Nintendo can make a franchise as old as Mario always look fresh and exciting.
I will buy this.

I'm surprised they didn't make Bowser look like Dennis Hopper. That seems to be the style they're going for.

Actually, it reminded me WAY more of Sonic Adventure, which is an AWESOME sign!

Surprised they went for a full on sandbox game instead of a hybrid of 64/Sunshine and 3D Land/3D World, you'd think the goal would be to develop a formula that can appeal to both styles instead of just trading off every couple of years. I have to wonder what Miyamoto is thinking there, doesn't seem to be smart business.

Anyway, the series definitely needed this and I couldn't be happier to see 64/Sunshine style gameplay again. The exploration is back, the unique settings are back, there's some unique gameplay mechanics. Can't wait for this one, definitely my most wanted Switch game.

As for the realism in the city: Its not only the city! More stuff in the game does look realistic and darker compared to what we are used to with Mario. And the city looks very big and not at all like a Mario stage (it also looks VERY open). We have to get used to it, but personally I am happy that the free-roaming is back AND they are doing something different. I mean, they could have easily done a new Mario 64 or Galaxy, but they chose not to. However, there is probably no hubworld: You travel a la mario galaxy 2. A pity.

On a sidenote: This is a bit Sonic, and could mean a new Mario movie. Mario among humans, not the movie I want to see! But for the game it might be ok, if done right (hopefully).

i remember when sunshine had real people during it's first debut trailer. so, this does not bother me at all either way.

I was very happy to see this return to what 3D Mario games were before 3D Land/3D World. so, i can't wait to tried this out

Placing Mario in the real world just feels wrong.
Ilike the Hat functionality but thats it. Not hyped at all

The level design is everything I wanted. Galaxy 1 and 2 were both pretty meh IMO. They were much too linear. On the other hand, I adored 64 and Sunshine. The whole exploration thing was so awesome. I would have liked a hub world, but I can live without it if it means we're getting a 64/Sunshine-esque Mario.

@Henmii The city isn't actually that big, it's rather small. If you pause at around 0:42 you can see pretty much the entire level. A big rectangle with a main street, that splits near the end in front of a giant skyscraper: https://youtu.be/5kcdRBHM7kM?t=42

After having watched the trailer a couple of times, I can say that Big Donk City is far more ''Mario-like'' than it appears at first. Traffic lights are actually ?-blocks, there are coin everywhere and Bowser flags too. Seems like you need to change those flags back to red flags (like the one that appears on your ship). Maybe the flags trigger a boss fight or another objective?

Kogwald seems to be the name of the forest level, you can't really see how big it is, but it appears to have different sections. Then there's the Mexican/Egypt level, which seems to be the biggest so far. There's the Mexican town that seems to be the starting point, a big sprawling desert that you can cross on one of those Egyptian lion statues, and a big section with a giant upside-down pyramid and platforms high up in the sky. The fourth level is the food-themed level with the simple art style. Not much to be said about that level; there's a giant volcano with a giant casserole dish on top of it.

@Sinister It appears that ''New Donk City'' is just one level though. Every level has their own art style it seems.

It's one world man lol, probably encompasses like 5% of the game.
