Has there been any footage of L.A Noire on Switch? It strikes me as a little odd that there has been zero marketing for this game...yet folk wanting to buy the game blind in droves!

I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.

It is concerning indeed. I preordered the game a while back, and I would have loved to get it in my mailbox next tuesday. But I'll cancel the preorder if nothing gets shown, and wait for reviews so I can choose between LA Noire and Doom.

@MegaTen Playstation already has a game service called Playstation Now and it is f*&^&^& amazing.
I know I read about it before it came out but since I dont have a PS4 I totally forgot about it. Well I saw someone mention it online the other day, so I see Sony has a 7 day free trial and this service is for PC too???...

I sign up in about 5 minutes and then after waiting like 60 seconds for game to load, I was already playing The Last of Us.
My mind was blown.. I have been playing games over 20 years and I've always pretty much needed two things. 1. the hardware. 2. the games.
Ok this flipping thing isn't even using my computer hardware.. I dont need to download or own the game... its fully streaming games like netflix... all I need is the internet and a controller.

This just blew my mind to think how they could offer all the new games if they wanted and hardware and software are becoming totally obsolete... I am really living in the future.

@Ervex_109 gotta say, wonderful posts and explanations. I legitimately learned some interesting things from them

@Inertiacreep Now try playing Splatoon that way.......Then try SFII. Anything that relies on precise inputs is crippled by lag. There's no way to fix that problem.

Plus you're still using "hardware", you're using a high end internet service that costs good money per month, and isn't even available everywhere. It's going to be a LONG time until universal support for that kind of performance is even available. And even then, anything that requires precise inputs would be better on smartphones than streamed on a console.

Whether it's streamed games or 14GB for LA Noire, we're talking using what amounts to very expensive monthy services that not everybody has access to or subscribes to to make any of this work. And that goes double on Switch. Where lots of people are cord cutting some people's only internet connection is their phone these days....heck, if not for gaming I'd probably even switch to that........but hotspotting is limited to 10GB/mo under most plans (meanwhile ppl can stream Netflix infinitely.....GRRRRRRR.)

Inertiacreep

@NEStalgia yea i know just because the nature of it the input lag will be higher.. but honestly i would think it would be pretty bad but it actually feels just like I'm playing off the console.

And you know what i meant by hardware.. i mean now we have the technology to play any game without requiring any of the graphics processing power to do it.. and yes i know this is kind of a select market atm but my point of bringing it up is for what may lie ahead for the future.

@Inertiacreep TloU is an interactive move with heavy aim assist. You could telegraph your inputs to a radio operator for manual input and it would still feel like it's console local But for twitch games it presents a big problem (Doom for example, would stink. Splatoon would stink worse.) The latency issue can't ever be fixed with any currently intended tech.

You're right though about a future tech path...but there's the catch 22. 1080p can be streamed like that easily now but now gamers want 4k. Then they'll want VR (or so we're told.) The demand for what CAN be processed keeps outpacing what's reasonable to put in giant rendering farms.... Running download servers and retro games in a rendering farm is one thing. But the expense on the server side of churning out ever more demanding graphics (and the cooling required) will still make it more reasonable to sell hardware to the end user for a long long long time.

I think around the time Sony bought Gaikai they wanted to push that tech and the value of the purchase with PSNow. But I think they also realized what a dent that could make on their core business of moving hardware, so then they doubled down on ratcheting up graphics demand requiring local processing. Running all that in a data-center would be a nightmare on cooling costs, well beyond the revenues PSNow could provide. We'll see more streaming in the future, but "AAA" is the thing that will prevent it from being a center focus short of individual-game-subscriptions. I could be wrong....but IMO streaming passes too much value to the consumer for too limited an audience (for the forseable future) and captures too little available profits at this point.

And at some point the data operators are going to push back. Cable/phone companies are sick of footing media companies bills, and rest assure "the empire" will strike back through some loophole one of these days. Cable cutting is reaching critical mass. They're going to want to clamp down sooner rather than later. People might be less in love with streaming and huge downloads if metered connections were to arrive as they keep floating every time Net Neutrality comes up....

Idk if I buy into those numbers. There are a number of games from the PS one era that are already seeing data corruption.

And you also have the option of storing backup copies of all your games on a micro SD. As long as it's not being used, it should last a lifetime (according to numbers you posted anyways). If, one day, data corrupts, just swap SD and you're good for another 20 years. That's 40 years total. Half a lifetime.

I imagine that's satisfactory for most.

(and not to make it sound like I am on the side of digital because I am actually on the side of physical myself, however, I do think the drawbacks are largely exaggerated in many cases)

I buy all my games physical- the digital is only in addition to. But the reason I haven't gone completely digital isn't because of my concern about data corruption it's simply because I'm a collector and I love having a physical collection.

What would be nice though is if these generations of home consoles evolve into iterative generations (like with X1X and PS4 Pro), so that the next Switch successor is completely BC with Switch. Kind of like what we see with Xbox. If that were to happen the eshop would never be shut down. It would become like STEAM, almost.

I imagine though that in 20 years I'll be playing my Switch games on a hacked Switch, and will easily be able to load games onto an SD card from the PC at will. Or at the very worst, will be playing Switch games on my Switch 5 as virtual console.

Even if that is PS360 graphics it still looks pretty good to me.

I'm sorry if i missed it, but does anyone know why amazon isn't taking pre-orders for this game in the USA? Thanks

Feel free to add me and contact me
Darn you Nintendo, my backlog is already out of control and you are just making it worse with these new game announcements!!!!

JaxonH

@Ste

Not sure, actually. I was wondering the same thing myself.

My advice is purchase through BestBuy. Be sure to grab a 2 year GCU membership first, so you can get 20% off all purchases for two years for just $30. And unlike Amazon, it's not just for pre-orders and also works on collector editions and also works for amiibo. Also, $10 for preordering certain top games (Mario Odyssey, FIFA 18 and NBA 2K all qualified) making the price effectively $37.99 day one. Knock off another couple bucks if you sign up for their credit card and use that

@QwertyQwerty why? I thought they already had a switch trailer that showed how it will look on the system.. if you need to see gameplay, watch PS or XBOX gameplay.

It looks practically identical. I think they were over selling the "Remastered graphics" on the PS4/X1 versions. They look exactly the same aside from resolution.

But even with regard to resolution, Switch is 1080p just like base level PS4/X1. So you're pretty much getting the exact same game, plus portable mode version.

These are the kinds of games I like to see. Don't get me wrong, DOOM is incredible and I'm so thankful I can now play it on the go. But it definitely had to take a hit in order to run, whereas this game is shining in full splendor.

Yeah I can't really tell much of a difference so this game will hopefully be a good port. It already looks really good anyways.

Man, I'm so torn apart.

On one side, I really want this game. I love Rockstar, I love openworld, I love detective games, and I love the 40s atmosphere.
On the other side I'm sick of it being not playable from cartridge only.

I canceled my L.A. Noire pre-order and got DOOM instead, but man, I still want to play L.A. Noire more than anything else atm.

I just checked the situation on PS4 the other day, and literally every game on that system needs a day one download or install consisting of approx. 20-30GB. Some games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II even take 50+ GB of space. Just needed something to justify purchasing L.A. Noire on Switch. The situation is still far from ideal, but it's a game I really want. And if I really want a game, then I'd even get a digital version.

Yeah people, I give in and order the physical (half-digital) version once more.
