Hey all. Like everyone else, my son has had several issues with drift in both joysticks. We had Nintendo repair it 3 times under warranty.

With the warranty now expired, I had bought one of those kits to repair it myself. Recently the right joy con started drifting. I took it apart and replaced the joystick.

Now the Switch will not recognize it when attached.

Info:

  • all buttons and joystick work fine.
  • vibration works fine.
  • joy con works perfectly unattached, so the antenna is fine.
  • I turned the Switch off completely.
  • I disconnected the joy cons and paired them again.
  • there are no broken wires.
  • all ribbons are attached.
  • I cleaned the connector pins with alcohol.
  • thinking maybe there was some sort of break in the rail ribbon that I couldn't see, I even replaced the rail. Still nothing.
  • it still charges when attached.
  • I've repaired the left joy con before, and it was just fine after.

I'm at a loss and completely frustrated. What else could it be?

@glenzee Maybe the ribbon isn't seated well? It's a guess.

I saw Spawn Wave on youtube point out that replacement 3ds screens sometimes don't work because the ribbon wasn't seated well.

@WoomyNNYes I really don't think that's it. When I took it apart the first time I didn't even remove the ribbons from the original rail and sync board either. And the new one is in far, secure, with no movement.

Something seems wrong or not connected. I say take apart again and verify everything is as it suppose to be connected. And did you not ask Nintendo Support to just give you a new controllers because it wasn't not working?

@SwitchForce it's long past warranty. Unless I want to pay big bucks for them to do it now...

@glenzee isn't the repair under different warranty? So how long are we talking?

@SwitchForce Thanks. I just set up a repair. It said that they will fix it free, but if there are any repairs that aren't free they'll let me know. Whatever that means, they should automatically do it.

Thanks!

@glenzee After joycon drift got a lot of negative publicity, Nintendo started been fixing joycons regardless of warranty. I've seen one or two regulars here say they sent in joycons for repair, and got a new pair back. I don't know how long Nintendo will be accepting joycons out of warranty, or without proof of purchse, but they have been doing it since like 2019-ish.

Here's a July 2019 nintendolife article where they say nintendo is not requiring proof of purchase.
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2019/07/nintendo_will_repor...
"Customers will no longer be requested to provide proof of purchase for Joy-Con repairs. Additionally it is not necessary to confirm warranty status."
