I had the same problem! I got as far as finding a nice flat area, creating a work bench, crafting torches to protect me at night (enemies apparently don't spawn within x amount of steps from a torch) so I made myself a little circle and saw out the night.
Then I just went back to playing BoTw...... @NEStalgia

@Nicolai Heh, I was never able to memorize anything as a kid My brain just wasn't wired for memorization (still isn't.) I can work out any solution to any problem in real-time.....but don't ask me to regurgitate any rote information. Want me to solve it again? Show me the problem again. It means you always do badly on school tests that are all about memorization, but can do real-world things fast while everyone else is finding the right tome to memorize to tell them how to do it Teachers dismiss it....clients love it... go figure. Same in games. Someone asks "how do I do this?" I have no idea, I don't remember, it, I can't describe it. But if I pick it up I do it in seconds My brain wasn't a sponge, it was more of a hydroelectric dam It absorbed nothing at all, but categorized and processed all of it, which generated other thoughts on other things, nonetheless.

You could be right with multiplayer. I never until yesterday considered that multiplayer even existed in this game. I just assumed it was a solo affair. Especially with how popular it is on tablets, I assumed online wasn't really a thing. I'm sure that eats data!

Even on mobile you have multiplayer.

Also now that I remember, when you create a new world, there's the option to start with a chest filled with things to ease you into the game, it's 100% penalty free. The chest usually comes with planks, saplings, seeds, some food and a few tools.

The chest is spawned near you and is surrounded by torches, which you can also take with you.

@Masurao Haha, wow if Minecraft is taking off in Japan to the point that it's unofficially part of GCCX, I REALLY feel behind the curve! Your tips seem to be pretty on point for getting started day 1....I'll have to give that a try. How do you see what your'e doing in the cave you cave day 1? And how do you keep monsters out of it as you likely don't have a furnace/coal/sand yet if you're doing wood/sheep? And if you wall it off? How do you see? I had that problem yesterday. No stone/sand for a furnace/coal/glass/torch. So I had to wall in my little cave and it was pitch black. Waiting around for daylight sounds like a bad plan!

Also, does Switch feature local multiplayer? I know PC does, but I can't find out about Switch (Not split screen, just 2 local consoles) or does it only support online?

@Meowpheel Ohh, that's interesting....that sounds like it could be useful.

The tutorial mode did get me familiar with some of the concepts in the game...but it was also an overwhelming tutorial. I did NOT know there were enemies at all at that point

@G0dlike LOL! Yeah...that's kind of where I've been!

Yeah, the classic system is ovjectively simpler if you don't mind looking up all of the super complex recepies they added in the patches. Tools and blocks follow a known logic.

So, since this game is getting cross-play between Xbox, PC, and mobile, surely voice chat is coming to this game eventually, right?

Got married.

I could see crossplatform voice chat with Xbox Live being something Nintendo is not willing to condone.

Does this community have any sort of server on the Switch version?

So I followed everyone's advice. I created a "classic" size world. I turned on hosting options and disabled day/night cycle and turned on "keep inventory." Training wheels. (I also found the local multiplayer which makes the game a lot more appealing.)

I also decided the "Natural texture Pack" is the only usable texture pack. That original texture pack that makes everything weird warped 8-bit sprites is fugly, and I don't even know what material type I'm looking at most of the time! (I remember in the tutorial it told me under the cursor what it was...that's gone somehow now...and I see no option to turn it on?)

So: World 1: I can't find any sheep.
World 2: I can't find any light oak wood.
I created world 3: After a LOT of wandering I found 3 sheep and FINALLY found an oak forest (seriously, how are you supposed to tell the tree types apart, they all look the same, and the stuff you need at the beginning is nowhere near spawn!)

So I carved out a cave in the hillside to make a bed and crafting tables in. It's still daylight because it can't become night, I have it off. I hear.......growling..... WHY is there growling in my hillside cave? During the day? It sounds like it's behind the wall. What the heck is going on?

You don't really need all different kinds of wood, the differences are purely cosmetic.

About texture packs, I like the "pattern" pack.

There's a cave behind your cave with zombies in it.

@Meowpheel But it doesn't seem like I can make wooden objects out of anything but the light oak planks?

@KirbyTheVampire Ugh...geeze...figures. Time to move! I can't do anything about zombies (unless theres a way to defeat them early on?)! And I can't sleep knowing there's growling

@DarthNocturnal I'll have to try that one. I know the default one while colorful is nigh unusable to me. Natural at least brings it up to "Quake 1" standards (I'm sure Super Dooper will be lovely in the Fall). City is cool, but the outdoor world just seems odd with it.

The real question is which one looks best in 4k?

NEStalgia

Eel

You can do all the things with all the woods, you just need to turn them into planks first.

You can easily defeat zombies with anything, just keep hitting them.

@DarthNocturnal I'm confused why the game always asks whether to enable online or not then. Maybe that's just for hosted play and once the world's owner goes offline, the server would go down? And maybe it'd be limited to 4 people or so?

Also, I feel like you're missing out on a lot of Minecraft if you turn the night cycle off. Also keep in mind that the classic texture pack is supremely readable, and is good for learning the game.

@Meowpheel Ohh, so once you make the right type of wood planks you can use it for any wooden item? I didn't try making the other planks I thought I needed Oak planks! That's one place the "simple" crafting system is confusing!

Oh, so it's "safe" to confront zombies even early game without weapons and armor?

NEStalgia

NEStalgia

@Haru17 I turned night off for learning. Basically I couldn't find the wood, sand, and wool I needed, thus no pickaxe, then no stone, so in day 1 I couldn't get a bed or enough lighting, so I'd have to build a cave, wall it off, and put the console down waiting for day again...it was annoying. At least until I figure out what I'm doing that makes it easier to get a feel for it all. I intend to turn it back on again once I get base camp set up, but at least I can get the wool and wood now.

Personally I find the classic texture pack unreadable at all for the most part. It's kind of jarring and I can't identify textures well. Sand and water sure. Different stones and woods and such seem unidentifiable. So far, (hopefully) natural is just a more real-world-represented version of it (stone looks like....stone...)

NEStalgia

Eel

One on one, they're pretty easy to deal with. But creating a sword makes things a whole lot easier.

And yeah, recipes that require planks will take any kind of plank. In the case of placeable objects, their color will be that of the planks you used, so they have decorative purposes.

@NEStalgia If you go in there and place torches everywhere and kill all the monsters, you should be okay. Any source of light will cause monsters to stop spawning in that spot. If the cave is too big for that, you could just wall off a section of it so that you don't hear the growling anymore.

If you do go in, just be wary of skeletons. I would strafe left and right while moving towards them, because if you just go at them straight on, they'll hit you over and over with arrows. Creepers are also dangerous. A good strategy when fighting them is to move forward, hit them once, then immediately move backwards, and repeat that over and over until they're dead. That will prevent them from blowing up.

Zombies are generally pretty easy. Just hit them with anything until they die. I would recommend a sword if you're fighting more than one, though.

@DarthNocturnal Yeah, I used to frequent a private server back when I played Minecraft on laptop. The moderator would help me with some larger world edits, then I would fly around with this plug in chiseling away at them. I don't have a picture of it, but I made this giant Nordrassil-y tree with a hollow trunk. There was this jumping puzzle where you could climb a tower outside, jump onto the nearby branches, slip through the bark of the tree, and drop down this sequence of mushrooms sprouting from the inside of the trunk until you got to the garden at the base.
