Hello everyone, and thank you for your time and thoughts!
My Brother-In-Law and I are trying to work together to give our nephews a great Christmas! They are big fans of Nintendo and love a plethora of different games. I bought them Switch Lites for Christmas to call their own and I'm excited to have them join me in some online adventures together!!
What exactly do we need to do in order to ensure that everyone can play a game online together? We're having some serious technical difficulties trying to figure this all out.
Currently.. My Brother-in-Law is the account holder. He created two new supervised accounts for each of the children that are tied to his account directly. Say the children wanted to log on and play.
For Example!! Lets say everyone wants to jump on and play some Mario Kart or Diablo 3 together online.
Each person needs...
1. A console
2. A copy of the game
Would multiple accounts be able to log in to switch online through the family plan? And being each person would need a copy of the game, how do I log on the supervised child accounts and make a purchase through their ID's?
I gotta say, this is incredibly frustrating and not nearly as simple as one would hope for a game console. Good Christmas!!
@Regulus6891 Each console will need a copy of the game, if you want to play online together. That's how the Nintendo ecosystem is designed.
I'm not sure how to answer the question about accounts, because answer requires follow up questions. But that's why I'll recommend Nintendo's customer support. (someone else here might be better at parsing that out, than me.)
Believe it or not, Nintendo of America's customer service is really good. You can use the phone line, or their super handy chat messenger. If you call, don't be afraid to give them your email, they only use it to keep record of your call, in case you call back again, another rep look up to see what you talked about last time. And unlike most companies, it's pretty quick to get a person on the phone, if you call. If you call, have the nintendo site loaded on a computer or something in case they point you to a nice page of directions on their support page. https://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/contact
@Regulus6891 Not sure where you're getting frustrated as it seems you know how it works.
If you have access to each Switch, just add the kids' accounts (if they haven't been added already) and got to the eshop to buy the games.
Alternatively, you could just buy the games online and give the kids a download code.
For online play, the admin account of the family group needs to invite the kids' accounts. Each kid will need an email address to register the account by.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
@gcunit I think his frustration is because they're gifts, and they don't have them set up yet. And it's hard to pin stuff down until you set up the nintendo account (on nintendo's website) and have a switch in front of you.
The frustration is logging onto the childrens accounts and trying to purchase the game, but being denied ability to purchase the game due to it being a childs account despite taking all the child restrictions off even just temporarily so I'd be able to do it!!
I actually have download codes for Mario Kart and Smash, as they are widely available and easy to obtain. The big game in question is Diablo 3... Download codes unavailable online so I have to get it through the E-shop directly. Fine, but its not making it easy. For the love of all that is holy, Please just take my money!!
@Regulus6891 Regarding download codes, that's easy. From Switch home screen, open eshop(select orange briefcase icon at bottom). Once in eshop, scroll down to "Enter Code", and plug in the download code. Do this on each console. One download code per console.
I know some here good at answering family console setup questions, but I cant' remember who. If nobody else answers, I'll suggest Nintendo chat messenger (or phone line). Helping parents setup consoles is what they do. It's not outsourced support. Its nice people in Seattle. I've use them 3-4 times, and been very pleased. It's not like calling a dreaded cable company
Currently.. My Brother-in-Law is the account holder. He created two new supervised accounts for each of the children that are tied to his account directly.
By this, I assume that you mean that he has created his own parental account (which would require its own NNID), and by extension two child accounts (being another two NNIDs) that are supervised by your brother-in-law's account, correct?
Would multiple accounts be able to log in to switch online through the family plan?
Yes. A single user account only covers one NNID at a time, so, a family plan allows up to eight NNIDs to be logged in simultaneously. Nintendo Switch Online membership operates on a per account basis, not on a per console basis.
And being each person would need a copy of the game, how do I log on the supervised child accounts and make a purchase through their ID's?
I believe they would have to make the purchases themselves via the eShop (or you would have to do it for them by using their console). I am not sure whether you can do this on their behalf online without the use of their actual consoles (unlike the Wii, there is no "gifting" system, unfortunately). You can activate parental controls to restrict their use of the eShop and other online services if you so choose.
Physical copies of games can be shared between consoles without issue, which you may wish to consider for single-player experiences (unlike previous Nintendo handhelds, save data is stored in the console's system memory, not in the cartridge itself), but for multiplayer games, yes, each person will need a copy of the game.
There are very rare circumstances in which a free app can be installed to allow players to share a single copy of a game. For example, Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics can be played by up to four people with a single copy of the game (so long as other users have downloaded the demo version from the eShop).
Porygon did nothing wrong.
